About this property

Excellent Apartment On A Farm On The West Side Of Iceland

Excellent apartment on the first floor of the house in the countryside, on a farm. The house is located in a beautiful and peaceful valley called Norðurárdalur in Borgarfjörður, 154 km from Keflavík International Airport (1 hour and 55 minutes drive). From the borders of Reykjavík city, the drive is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The apartment was renovated in 2008. It is 70 square meters of size and is well equipped, i.e. microwave, coffee machine and a washer and free WiFi. Beddings and towels included. There are two rooms and in site the apartment, one bedroom and a living room with a pull-out sofa. Extra mattresses and beddings can be provided.

Why choose West Iceland:

West Iceland is the mecca of the Icelandic sagas, such as Egils saga Skallagrímssonar, Eiríkssaga and Laxdæla. It has many historical sites and there is a possibility of guided tours around such sites. Birdlife in the area is rich. The nature in the area is spectacular, with its mountains, craters, waterfalls, lakes, valleys and magical lava. Furthermore, it is one of the best areas in Iceland to view Northern Lights, during the fall and wintertime.

Historical locations in the area:

Reykholt (30 min driving distance):
The heritage of Iceland's greatest medieval writer, poet, scholar and statesman, Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241), is rooted in Reykholt in the west of Iceland.
Eiríksstaðir (30 min driving distance):
Most evidence suggest that Eirik the Red´s son Leif Ericsson 'Leif the Lucky' was born at Eirkisstadir. Leifur became the first Europian to set foot in North America, which he named Vinland, in the year 1000

Country base

The apartment is about 100 yards from Rte 1 which has light traffic including trucks that you hear, but that wasn’t an issue for us. We did an all day drive around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. For that, Borgarnes would be a better base just to save extra driving.

Great family accommodation.

This property was a great spot out in the beautiful countryside. It has spectacular views and was comfortable for my wife and I and our 3 older kids. Arny is quick to respond to any questions and keeps the place in great shape. We really enjoyed our stay.

Great place for family!

We loved staying at the Farmhouse! Arny was super responsive and self check in fast and easy. Waking up among the sheeps (litterlly passing in front of the window) was great for our daughters aged 8 and 9. We truly recommend for family stay!

Beautiful setting

I stayed here with my two daughters the first week of September. It's a great base location for exploring West Iceland. Borgarnes is about 20-30 minutes away, where you can stock up on groceries. Wonderful farm to table restaurant near by, pricey but highly recommend.

Must stay!

We stayed at Arny’s and visited several landmarks and attractions around there and Borganes. Later we stayed closer to Reykjavik, and we can sincerely say that staying at Arny’s property and that area was our highlight because there you can see many of the wonders of Iceland without the crowds and congestion. Thanks, Arny!

Spacious with great scenery

The apartment was the biggest we encountered in Iceland. Full kitchen with freezer and oven, living room with tv, full spacious bathroom, and lots of windows to see the beautiful landscape. Horses and sheep just outside the door and yet we had plenty of privacy. Very easy check in and check out. Minimal light pollution so we even saw the northern lights one night! Highly recommend this spot if you’re traveling through the north country. But get a 4x4 car!

An amazing stay in a beautiful farm setting

We loved our stay here. Our host was amazing and so helpful. She really made us feel at home. The apartment was excellent. One master bedroom and the living room had a sofa bed for the kids. Small but functional and updated kitchen made meal time easy. Amazing views of the farm lands and mountains was a great way to start the day. It is far from the nearest major town(35kms) but a great starting point for day trips to the west coast and southern interior of Iceland. If you really want to see and experience Iceland’s natural beauty we strongly recommend staying here.

Beautiful farm

We had a great time. The farm and surrounding hills are lovely and you can take long walks from there. My kids loved being able to play outside. The host is very gracious and friendly, let us watch her train horses and lent us berry picking equipment. There is a lot to see in Iceland, but just spending time on the farm is fun. The only thing that was different from the listing was that there isn't wifi, so depending on how good your international phone plan is you might want to rent a portable modem. This is cheap and easy, so don't let that deter you from this wonderful place.

Toasty Warm and Great Northern Lights

We were thrilled to access the apartment and find a cozy and warm accommodation awaiting us. The location is quite remote which made it awesome for seeing the northern lights from the driveway in between the house and the road. But…..be sure you pick up everything you need as the closest services, except for one self-serve automated gas station, is over 30 minutes away. (We forgot coffee☹️) I also recommend checking with the host about drinking water from the tap. There have been some unusual weather conditions in Iceland affecting ground water and we would have bought some drinking water to have at the apartment had we known. There was also a very friendly kitty cat.

At Home in Iceland

Spent a week at this property last summer and the memories grow fonder with time. From this location were able to visit the rugged Westfjords, the West peninsula and Reykolt area, Reykjavik and along the south coast as far as the Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon. We hiked to the top of the Iceland's largest waterfall, walked on glaciers, visited several museums, and on and on. Spending a week in the same location made us feel part of Iceland rather than the tourists we are. The apartment has quaint views, including birdlife and arctic fox right in your front yard. Arny was a fantastic host, took us horseback riding and pointed us to hikes and hot springs and other wonders that are off the guide book radar. The apartment itself felt like home and with grocery and restaurants near by we were always stocked with food and beverage.

Nice spot for larger groups in Western Iceland

Had more than enough space for our family of 6. Árny was sweet to have the extra beds out and made up for us before we arrived. Having a large shower was a pleasant change after the normal European shower sizes. Our daughters loved petting the Icelandic horses and discovering some outside play areas and toys behind the unit. Communication with Arny was good - responses usually within an hour. Only bummers for us were not being able to explore the trails and land behind the space (danger of rock slides from ice melt during the Spring) and having to boil our drinking water. The rest of the space had everything we needed and several fun hikes just down the road in Bifrost. Nearest grocery store about 30 mins away but there is a petrol station in town (5 mins). Was a good stay overall and would recommend for others needing sleeping for 4-6, but our previous Vrbo on this same trip set the bar high (value for the price) so 4/5 stars overall.

Comfortable, sunny house in quintessential Icelandic setting

This is a warm, sunny and spacious place in a typical Icelandic setting -- in the middle of nowhere, at the foot of the flat-top mountain, with a snowy peak right around the corner, and horses grazing near the house. Panoramic windows with fantastic views in all rooms; first thing you see when you open the shades in the morning is the horses -- they are behind the fence but it's very close. The apartment is on the first floor, while the owners (who also own a farm with sheep and chicken a small distance away) live on the second floor. The house is very well heated, modern, clean and well-kept (and did I say sunny!) with a fully functional kitchen; good wifi connection. The rooms and hallway are big -- in particular, the bathroom and the shower. A king-size(!) bed in the bedroom and 2 beds in the living room for kids. The winter returned when we stayed there (early April) and we did appreciate having an SUV to reach the house from the road -- but of course we knew from our past trip to Iceland that we must have an SUV to get to places, given that snow and blizzard come unexpectedly. We stayed in the house for a week and used it as a conveniently-located base camp for day trips to sightseeing destinations around the North of Iceland. Our two kids liked the friendly horses and a see-saw to pass the time while we prepared for trips in the morning. Grocery stores are at a distance, so we stocked up when we passed supermarkets and gas stations during the trips. General advice -- gas stations take credit/debit cards with chip **and PIN** at the pump. All stores take cards, so we never needed cash (except public restrooms at remote park sites ask you to put some ISK100=$1 in a jar, but it can be in any currency). Check the weather forecast and the website showing road closures before you go on your trip.

About the host

Hosted by Arny Helgadottir

Host profile image
Mrs. Árný Helgadóttir, Mr. Magnús Leópoldsson and our family welcome you to our farm on Hvassafell II.
I am a MSc nurse and a certified guide and my husband is a realtor. For the past 10 years we have been establishing farming and tourism, which is our interest, as we are both born and raised on a farm. Our three daughters and grandchildren are also interested in countryside living and as a family we enjoy spending time together on the farm.

Why they chose this property

We both grew up on a farm, and it has been our lifelong dream to establish our own farm. We were interested in merging farming with tourism, to give our visitors the opportunity to experience the Icelandic farming tradition, as well as the possibility to “refill their batteries” in the peaceful nature of Borgarfjörður. The location is perfect, as it is not too far from Reykjavík city, and yet the area is quiet, so it is an ideal place to experience the calming influences of nature.

What makes this property unique

First and foremost, we purchased this property because of its beautiful mountain view. Furthermore, the land is optimal for raising sheep and horses. Nearby, there are a variety of hiking and horseback riding paths, which is preferable for our interests, for we enjoy hiking and horseback riding in the beautiful Icelandic nature. Especially enjoyable are the Northern Lights, for this area turned out to be a unique site for viewing them, during the fall and wintertime.
