About this property
Cozy Historic Cottage Built in 1902
This lovely historic home was built in 1902 by the Rich Lumber Company when they came to pull lumber from this charming hamlet. This cottage was originally a mill worker boarding house but was converted into a family owned home purchased by John T. Olson who immigrated rom Sweden. The cottage is made out of original hemlock and has two bedrooms, one bath with the original claw foot tub/shower, a cozy family room with a wood pellet stove, a morning room, a large enclosed porch, full kitchen, breakfast bar and dining area. Two kayaks and two bicycles are included with the cottage and are available for your use. The home still has many of the original antique furnishings including the icebox that the Olson family stored their dairy products in to sell to the townspeople of Wanakena. Enjoy your morning coffee in front of the wood pellet stove in the cozy living room or in an Adirondack chair on the large wrap-around, screened-in porch surrounded by the aroma of balsam firs. Walk one block to the quaint village center. Go for a swim or launch the house kayaks at the public beach just 2 blocks away. Walk accross the river on our historic walking bridge which is what brings many people to the Hamlet. Walk to the tennis courts, basketball court or playground which is also set up for Pickle Ball. Take a self-guided walking tour of Wanakena, courtesy of the Wanakena Historical Association and visit our newly opened Wanakena History Center right on 2nd Street! For an old time feel, go to Otto's Abode in town and buy some candy or ice cream. You can also walk into the cooler for a beer. Take advantage of abundant opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, and exploring, as well as easy day trips to visit the Adirondack Experience museum in Blue Mountain Lake, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, or the tourist shops in Lake Placid and the High Peaks Region. Be sure to look up at night where it is not uncommon to see the Milky Way. Although this property sleeps 4, we have air mattresses and can sleep 6 people easily. Please note our camp is closed from November - May

About the host
Hosted by Lynn Smith
We are a family of four with two daughters ages 28 and 23. We were introduced to Wanakena in 2012 and immediately fell in love with the timeless feel, history and beauty of the Adirondack State Park. We believe in leaving every site we visit with no trace that we were ever there. We are from Maryland and spend much of our time thinking about our next trip to Wanakena!
Why they chose this property
There is just no place like Wanakena. It feels like you step back in time to a slower pace. We love the hiking trails within walking distance, as well as the public beach for swimming in the fresh water of the Oswegatchie River. It is a very friendly place and you just feel like you have come home and always belonged there.
What makes this property unique
Our property feels like history. It is conducive for spending time together and playing records on the record player and playing games. It is a calming, quiet place which will bring you serenity while you experience a small town feel.
