About this property

Berkshire Barn on 23 Wooded Acres 2BR/1.5 Bath Sleeps 7

A private driveway off a quiet road leads to a 1700 square foot loft-like Barn on 23 acres. There are two ponds, streams, and woods. Only the owners's house shares the property. No other homes in sight.

Built by a woodworker the Barn is spacious, with an open plan kitchen / dining / living room with wood stove and radiant heat concrete floors. Facing south with multiple french doors, this room is filled with light all day long. The kitchen is fully equipped with Viking stove and high quality cookware. Upstairs is also open plan with a king sized bed and bathroom with a clawfoot tub. The 3rd floor is an attic which has 3 single beds and a Queen. Note that this is an open attic, so ideal for children who enjoy sleeping in one large space together. It is carpeted and cozy.

From the bedroom you look out over the ponds, with a dock from which you can swim or canoe. In winter you can light a fire in the wood stove. We encourage guests to showshoe, sled, ice skate, cross country ski -- all on the property. And in summer, swim and fish in the ponds (there are 2, one for swimming and one for fishing). There is a group of rare Maidenhead ferns to discover back in the woods near a stream. And there is a 6 mile walk, biking / running loop which is hilly and convenient.

The house is located in Austerlitz, 20 minutes from both Great Barrington, MA and Chatham, NY. It is 2 minutes from Alford, MA.

We have 6 chickens in a coop on the property. 5 eggs a day, which are yours. Just help yourselves!

Note that we require a 4 week minimum booking.

Cozy weekend getaway

My daughters and I spent a long weekend at Tandala and it was fabulous! The barn is super spacious, well appointed and very comfortable. Annalisa was extremely responsive to my questions and helpful with information. We had planned to go snow-shoeing and cross country skiing but the warm weather melted all the snow. Instead, we went hiking in the state park 5 min away and the views from the peak were amazing. We also visited yarn shops in nearby Lenox and Chatham and fell in love with those charming villages. We cooked delicious meals in the gourmet kitchen, kept the wood stove going most of the time and enjoyed restful sleep on the comfy beds. A perfect weekend despite the lack of snow. The night before we left it snowed about 5 inches and we woke up to a beautiful newly fallen snowy landscape. Magical! Highly recommend this property for family friendly activities.

Wonderful Berkshire Barn

We loved staying at "the barn"! It has a wonderful relaxed feel. The many windows and french doors with views of the trees and land bring the outdoors in, especially nice in the fall when it is to cool to sit out. The barn is on a large lot which has a remote feel though there are many towns and recreation areas within a short drive. We were happy just to stay in with the well equipped kitchen with Viking stove to cook dinner and a large farm table to play games at. We enjoyed the openness of the living areas with their high ceilings. The abundance of woodwork and artistic touches throughout the house give personality and a warm inviting presence. The home is clean and beds were comfortable with nice linens. The outdoor shower is a favorite when the weather was warm! And of course it's not a barn without livestock so the chickens nearby lend an authentic feel. The hosts were helpful and friendly, we enjoyed meeting them and they were easy to connect with. They provided suggestions for restaurants and hikes and were happy to answer questions but also gave us our space. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definitely stay at the barn whenever we are in the area.

Beautiful Barn!

We had a wonderful time! The barn was clean and tidy when we arrived. We loved the high ceilings and spacious feel of the barn. Our kids had a great time checking on the chickens and finding fresh eggs, and paddling around the pond in the canoe. There are lots of activities to do within a short drive, but the property feels secluded and peaceful. We would love to come back!

Dreamiest quietest yummiest barn EVER

Met my best friend at the barn for a ladies weekend and we barely left because it was so good there. The barn is a new post and beam building, beautifully crafted, filled with windows and pottery and comfy couches and art and blankets. Apart from the chickens clucking here and there, it was perfectly quiet and the night stars were spectacular. We took two long walks nearby, and otherwise were just happy to cook and sleep and be in the amazing space. John and Analisa were in their house on the property while we were there, but they are lovely and we didn't hear or see them apart from them dropping off some fresh eggs. Will be back -- loved everything about the barn.

Lovely and super quiet place

Loved this place. We escaped the city for a special birthday weekend and relished in the peace, tranquility, distance from people and the privacy. The barn is ideally located a short drive from all-organic farms that sell their products so we ended up putting the over-sized chef's kitchen to use and it was very well stocked with everything we needed and a large dishwasher to boot. We will likely go back again sometime next year, a warm and relaxing environment.

Wonderful time, wonderful home

My husband and I took our five city kids to the country to live in a barn. What an amazing time we had! Every morning we greeted the chickens and checked to see if they had any eggs to share. The garden was at the end of the season but I did find a few zucchini and some beautiful basil to use with dinner that night. (the kitchen is my dream...wonderful to cook there) The barn is a wonderful place at an amazing rate. Traveling with five small kids (10 and under) it's a challenge to find anywhere that we can even stay in the same room. This home was perfect for us! We kept our three-year-old on the second floor with us since it would have been difficult for him to safely navigate the loft stairs. The other four kids loved the space. Two things...one that could improve and one warning to potential guests - there are plenty of lights but so many burned out bulbs that it made it difficult to see in the evening...we are readers and it was a drawback to not have enough light to curl up with a book - We chose this home because we wanted a break from the city noise. Imagine our dismay when we settled in for Saturday night and heard "THUMP, THUMP, THUMP" of a bass guitar. It seems there is a concert venue close by? and they were playing until at least 11 PM. Not exactly the peace and quiet we were looking for. So, if you plan to say, make note of possible concerts in the area. Otherwise, we were so happy with the house and our stay. We plan to make it habit. Thank you for sharing your home.

A Special Place

We can't say enough great things about this property and the owners. Our family of five, with school age children, had a blast. The house is stocked with wonderful books, games, toys, and art supplies. The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. The location is incredible; we loved swimming and fishing and using their canoe. The owners are great stewards of the land and after having stayed in the barn we wish we could have them design our house. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, literally and figuratively. They are the nicest vacation homeowners we have ever rented from. There are a lot of activities in the area. We recommend OmiArt and the Harlem Valley Bike Trail. We can't wait to go back.

Barnyard Bachelorette!

Just spent the weekend at the Barn where I hosted a bachelorette getaway! It was so perfect. The barn and property are lovely! Spent the time playing indoor and outdoor games, tie dying, scrapbooking, relaxing by the pond and the fire, and cooking (kitchen is large and wonderfully stocked). Even with a larger group it was really comfortable. John and Analisa are friendly, accommodating, and helpful in terms of booking and running into them on the property. Many of the ladies talked about returning with their own families! I would definitely recommend the property for a group or family gathering as well as a quiet getaway for two! Thanks again!!

Great family getaway

Great stay. My family enjoyed every moment from taking a walk, to creating our own artwork, to collecting our own eggs. Kids loved having their own private area upstairs (Like a clubhouse with a special staircase). Great location to see the area. Looking forward to coming back.

Amazing

The barn was lovely for a girls weekend away. It was decorated with lovely paintings and the main living area was not only charming but comfortable. The kitchen was great for cooking and had all that we needed to prepare our meals The land was great for a day of snow shoeing. John came by with some fresh eggs from the chicken coop. We went into Chatham to watch the Patriots game. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the country. We will be back!

Happy Family

We absolutely loved staying at the Berkshire Barn. My kids were in heaven, between the kids loft, the fishing lake, the fire pit, the outdoor shower, the drawer full of water guns, the shelves filled with children's books, and the art supplies. And my husband and I loved the amazingly well-stocked kitchen and the wonderful decor too. We will be come back as soon as we can.

Open and airy, lovely for a small group

My friends and I had tickets to Tanglewood and decided to rent a house so we could all be together. The barn was perfect, and we all had a great time hanging around the house, building a fire, roasting marshmallows and grilling burgers. The decor was lovely and there was so much inspirational art work. The kitchen was a joy to cook in, and the beds were so comfortable! I am looking forward to renting the Barn again!

Excellent weekend get away!

This property is the perfect place to spend a weekend with friends or for a quick girls' getaway. It is an ideal meeting place if you are trying to coordinate people from both New York and Boston, which we were. The barn is gorgeous, spaceous and stocked with everything you might need and more. I really can't say enough good things about this property. Looking forward to going back again!

Relaxing Retreat!

A group of friends and I stayed in the barn for a winter weekend getaway and we could not have had a more relaxing trip! The barn is beautiful. This property has everything, the space is open and every detail was considered in constructing and designing it. The kitchen was a blast to prepare meals in and the surround sound speakers set a wonderful ambiance during meals. The owners were wonderful in making sure we had everything that we needed. The area is full of activities! My group specifically enjoyed hiking the Hrvey Mountain. Our only complaint was that we were only staying the weekend. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful property with others!

A little piece of heaven

This vacation was exactly what I was hoping for. The property is beautiful, the amenities and house were everything we needed. Every detail was thought of, it was like we moved right in for the weekend. It was a perfect quiet, relaxing long weekend and we would definitely return!

Comforts of home

This home is a treat. We rented it for the summer and were delighted to find not only a beautiful, comfortable home in a picture-perfect spot, but a retreat that was equipped with top-of-the-line bedding, kitchen supplies and furniture. We had everything we needed. We have rented from VRBO before and found ourselves with lawn furniture, bad beds and not enough dishes. Not here. John and Analisa have thought of everything to make this vacation home perfect. Swimming in the pond, daily walks around the neighborhood and proximity to all the region has to offer added to the whole experience. Yes, it is a bit remote, but we found it well worth it and look forward to going back. If you like quiet, comfort and quality, you will love this home as much as we do.

Felt a million miles away....

The pictures do not do justice to this unique home and the surrounding property. For a ski weekend, the barn was a good "home base" as a convenient location between Jiminy Peak and Butternut/Catamount. Charming Berkshire towns and restaurants/shops are also within a ten-minute drive. We loved cooking at home in the well-equipped kitchen and enjoyed the state-of-the-art appliances. We went for long morning walks through the woods and along the stream that surround the property, lit fires in the wood stove, watched movies, played games, did puzzles and even painted. My only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer. Would highly recommend for a relaxing, peaceful get-away. We'll be back!

Peace and tranquility in the Berkshires

Spent a very relaxing few days with our 3 kids and had a great time! Have already booked our next stay there! The house is comfortable and the host family has great taste in my books. Everything is rock solid and high quality without being ostentatious. The kids had acres to roam around while we could have fun cooking and relaxing by the woodstove. I cant wait to come back in summer!

Attractive Getaway

My wife and I spent a week in this beautiful barn with 3 teenagers, and were sad to leave. It's a beautiful place in a peaceful, forested setting. The barn is spacious, very pleasant and inviting, artistically designed and maintained with loving care. We particularly appreciated the wood-burning stove and the radiant heat downstairs. The hosts are lovely people, and we would love to come again if the opportunity arises.

Wonderful Retreat!

Took a long weekend with our son. What a wonderful property and a lovely barn! All the comforts of home and perfectly located to enjoy the Berkshires during the day. Analisa and John were super hosts, going out of their way to share information on the area. We can't wait to visit again!

The Great Escape!

This lovely spot is the perfect get-away from bustling NYC! My husband, two children (now young teens) & I have been coming here for years and just love it. It is extremely peaceful. There are beautiful fresh-water ponds, complete with canoe, for dips in the summertime while Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, & all sorts of festivals are nearby. During ski season the slopes are really close; coming back to the barn for cocoa, cooking a great meal & relaxing is the best! The radiant heating system keeps the whole place comfortably toasty (t-shirts in the winter) while the crackling wood stove makes the common room cozy. As the kids grow older they love bringing friends, taking over the top floor & having the freedom to roam the acreage to do what they please. We've painted pictures, played games, read, written, cooked many delicious meals & created great memories here at the Barn. It is always very clean when we arrive with plenty of clean linens, top-notch appliances, amenities & the owners are extremely helpful.

About the host

Host profile image
We are a family of 4 who bought this property after 9/11. We started with just the land and lived in tents for a few summers while the Barn was built. We love everything about this property, from the winter skiing at Jiminy Peak (the children are on the ski team), ice skating on the ponds, jumping off the dock in summer, the fall leaves.
I am originally from California and came to New York City to be a professional dancer. My husband is originally from Kenya. We lived in Kenya for 5 years and our children were born there as well.
I am a technologist and work full time in New York City. My husband is a woodworker. He collects felled trees, mills the wood, and dries it in a solar kiln on the property. He then makes gorgeous pieces of furniture: from dining tables, coffee tables to chairs.
There is a second house on the property which was completed in the summer of 2011. After 10 years living in the barn we now weekend in the adjacent property and are able to share the Barn with others.

Why they chose this property

When I first moved to New York City to dance I lived with a family as an au pair. They had a weekend property in the Berkshires. That is when I fell in love with the area.
After 9/11, instead of buying an apartment in New York City, we decided to buy land upstate. We have been so happy to have a place to escape to.

What makes this property unique

You can cross country ski in a 1 mile loop through the property as it is flat. Just outside your door. In February ice skate on the pond. In July & August, swim in the pond, jump off the dock or lie on the dock and watch the sun set. And we now have a dozen chickens. Help yourselves to some fresh eggs!
