Excellent stay in a peaceful property
Outstanding gite. Our family of five found only one 'problem' during our two-week stay. Was it the view? Nope. The view was lovely from the very peaceful terrace. Pool was large, warm, private and sheltered, with a great deep end, with also shaded areas to read and sunny areas to lounge on unbroken, comfy sun loungers and soak up the sun. Japanese garden quirky, with many other places outside to sit. Kitchen spacious and had everything we needed (save for one thing). Beds comfy and there was a range of pillows. The sitting room comfortably would fit six film watchers. The owners had just updated the TV and so we briefly seemed to lose satellite telly to watch the Women's Euros, but that problem was quickly remedied. But it would be best to ask Nigel about the tv/dvd situation. It was fine for us. We watched Netflix. Dining table comfortably fit six diners, as would the terrace area, which was well enough lit to play board games at night. There is enough area to play badminton and to kick a ball around. Local village of St Severin is 7 minutes by car and sells most things in a (very friendly) Spar shop, and has restaurants and bars (not tried). Riberac is 15 mins away for larger supermarkets and more restaurants and bars. Angouleme is 45 minutes away. Perigueux is also 45 mins away and prettier but slightly smaller than Angouleme. The market at Chalais on a Monday will set you up for cold meat and cheese, plus lots of cheap summer clothes, trinkets, English novels, good lunch. The owners of the gite are incredibly responsive, friendly and discreet. They dealt with all issues immediately (but the issues were not about anything wrong; there was never anything wrong). We and our three daughters (15, 17, 19) really enjoyed the very peaceful, roomy, friendly atmosphere and comfy gite. Wi-Fi good. Negatives? We've stayed in many French properties over the years and this was the best. It is more geared towards older teenagers than younger children. It didn't have as many outdoor games or indoor board games or books as some places, but we always come prepared anyway. The only criticism was the lack of cereal bowls. (They had pasta bowls but only one cereal bowl.) So, if it's a surfeit of cereal bowls you are after, try somewhere else. But if it is a very peaceful and comfortable gite representing excellent value for money with really good hosts that you would be genuinely tempted to return to again and again, try this place out.
