About this property

Riverside cottage with sauna- Orne, Normandy.

Secluded Cottage retreat with exclusive access to the river, with extensive grounds and surrounded by rocky cliffs and woodland on the Mont de Cerisy. We love the peace and beauty of the location immersed in nature. To fully enjoy the outdoors, nature and wellness properties we have recently added next to the garden a 3 person sauna in a room with shower and day-bed and outdoor kitchen/dining area.

Formerly an industrial valley, with mills driven by the river, it is now a recognised nature area where the land has reverted to wildlife and peace. Buildings have been repurposed-our stone house has been lovingly brought back to life and the nearby water mill is becoming a cultural space for theatre creatives- performers and technicians: Le Moulin de l'Hydre. This adds further character to the valley when a community performance is held in the theatre and surrounding woods and countryside once a year.

Step out of the private sauna and cold plunge into the Noireau river. That's the rhythm of a stay here: heat, then cold water, then quiet. Peaceful with a focus on wellbeing.

This 1860s stone cottage sits in a river valley close to Suisse Normande or Little Switzerland, with a rocky, wildflower-covered cliff on one side and wooded hills on the other. Half a kilometre of riverside garden is yours to wander — for early cold plunges, slow afternoons in the hammock, or evenings by the fire once the light starts to fade. The stone cottage is cool in summer, cosy in winter.

Well-behaved dogs are warmly welcome — the riverside garden and woodland walks were practically made for them.

The sauna is close to the river, so you can move between cold water and heat in a minute-included for your stay- please treat it as you would your own. Bring a robe and towels down to the plunge spot right by the house, or take the short walk along the garden to a quieter stretch of water.

Days here tend to slow down. Watch the stars from the bath in the eves by candlelight. Read on the sofa in front of the log burner. Walk the woodland path up the Mont - deer and wild boar are regular sightings, and the wildlife along the river is remarkable: otters, red kites, kingfishers, woodpeckers, and red squirrels are all seen from the garden. We regularly count twenty species at once using the Merlin app and so a haven for birdwatchers. There are some binoculars for your use.

Ideal for those who want to create-sketch or paint in the garden, journal under a tree or by the river or play games or do puzzles by the fire.

By the house is parking for 3/4 cars and a hard area away from the cars with the new petanque court and an area for kids to play.

There are lawn areas for activates (try croquet?) relaxing in the sun or watching the stars (the milky way feels very near with no light pollution). Beyond the house the extensive grounds become wilder under the trees, by the water, with meadow grass and a table for sundowners.

For the active there are forest trails and quiet roads to walk, run or cycle. Mountain biking on marked trails or cycling the many Velo Vert routes more sedately. Following activities cool off in the river or head for a hot shower in the garden side wellbeing room before heading up to the fire side or into the sauna.

Cook and eat outside at the covered outdoor kitchen —large fridge, drinks island, outdoor table. Or use the indoor fully equipped kitchen in the open planned living and dining area, then gather at the large French oak table to share food and stories of the day.

The cottage sleeps 7/8 across four bedrooms — a ground-floor double with en-suite shower room, plus a double, a bunk room, and a single upstairs (with additional mattress available). There is a further sofa bed on the mezzanine. A recently refitted kitchen (induction hob, dishwasher, air-fryer, Nespresso with milk frother), and a corner bath upstairs in the spacious bathroom, mezzanine with TV for your Netflix etc accounts, board games and books, wireless speaker and Free fast WiFi throughout round out the comforts.

This is a place for people who want to properly switch off — couples after a reset, small groups who'd rather sit by a fire than sightsee, or families happy to let the woods and the river do the entertaining. The village store, post office, and boulangerie are a kilometre away.

Enjoy the local cheese and taste cider and calvados in the nearby village of Cerisy Belle Etoile.

If you do want to go further, Flers is 6km and many Normandy sites can be visited for a day trip: the D-day beaches of the Normandy coast, Mont St Michel, Granville (one of our favourites for beach and lunch), Monet's garden at Giverny, Bayeux, Les Mans, the stylish north coast towns of Cabourg or Honfleur, the bungee and zipline at the Skypark or, a recent discovery of ours, the Pays d'Auge area beloved by David Hockney.

Near by the sites of Suisse Normade and Calvados including the beautiful village of Clecy with its activities on the river and rock climbing in the gorge at the Rochers des Parcs and spectacular look out at the La Roche d'Oetre. The national Parc Normandie-Maine and the art deco resort at Bagnoles de l'Orne (we have cycled to there with the children when they were younger on the Velo Vert) are also near by.

Coming soon: Petanque court and outdoor games area.

Well equiped and welcoming house

We had a lovely stay at Les Vaux. We found the place well equiped and spacious for our company. The location was first rate, rather secluded but close enough to baker and shops to be practical.

Peaceful and relaxing

Les Vaux was wonderful, such a peaceful and relaxing place. The grounds are beautiful, and it was a joy to wake up listening to the river alongside the property. In the heart of the French countryside, it is a great place to explore Normandy. Thank you to Suzanne for all her help, we hope to be back soon!

Beautiful and very well equipped

Beautiful property, tranquil setting with everything you need, short drive to a town with shops and restaurants. Lots of versatile outside and inside seating. Outside lighting was lovely. Very spacious even with 7 adults. We had a wonderful holiday. Short (but steep!) walk to Mont Cerisy with a cafe, crazy golf, children's play area and small ruined castle.perfect setting

Lovely house in a great location in Normandy

We had a lovely stay in Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont. The house is spacious and well equipped. The large yard with stream provided a peaceful setting for children to run around and for outdoor meals. Communication with Suzanne was very easy. We definitely recommend the house!

A comfortable house in a lovely location

The location is great - the stream next to the garden kept us cool in hot weather, and the children could play in it, although it is rocky and shallow (bring water shoes), and the garden is as peaceful as could be, with wonderful walking country all around whether you want to climb forested hills or walk through open rolling Normandy landscapes. The house is well equipped and comfortable for 6-8 people, with plenty of seating inside and out, and a built in barbecue, and some play stuff as well, badminton bats and so on. We wanted to retreat from Covid craziness and be in a place where we didn't really need the rest of the world for a week, and it's perfect for that - you have space, scenery, and peace, although it's also quite nice knowing that the friendly neighbours are a hundred metres or so away - they were very helpful. There's a deserted riverside building just upstream that you see from some angles which isn't exactly beautiful, but it isn't a bother and generally it's pretty idyllic. There were eight of us, including 4 children of all ages, and we had a really very good time, whether fishing (limited success, but quite some fun) or exploring or just hanging around. We didn't even have any bother from mosquitoes, despite the stream. The local villages are pretty sleepy, but pleasant enough and you can get the stuff you need without going too far. Bread and a simple shop are just a couple of kilometres.

A Fabulous Home From Home.

The house is all as described, plenty of room for everyone to relax. All mod cons are there, there is a TV, but as its up on the mezzanine floor out of the way it wasn't viewed much, I think it only got used by our 16 Yr old to watch YouTube. All bedding and towels were included too which is the bonus. Your hidden away in a secluded valley, there is a neighbour who acts as the local liason, and will help with any problems you have, but you'd never know they were there otherwise. The gardens that run by the river are more like meadows, plenty of area for the kids to run around, you can enjoy fishing in the river, plenty of minnows to catch, other larger silver fish, and if you're lucky (like I was) trout (only one though). Make sure you use the bbq it's so nice to sit outside and eat and drink in the peaceful garden. You feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, but you're only 20 minutes from a supermarket. All in all, all I can say is that it's a lovely place to stay, and an ideal base for exploring the Normandy countryside.

The place, the environment, the neighbours, ... it all gave us a very happy feeling. So tranquil everything, idyllic, spaceous, easy living ... Suzanne as the owner picked up the communication very early and stayed in touch to assure we were totaly fine. Neigbours Mel and Johan were there to help us with anything , with fixing the broken wifi caused by a lightning struck, with many tips and even with a big frozen turkey leg :) . I enjoyed les vaux with all my senses, we all did. Would love to go back one day

Wonderful location, peaceful ambience.

We had an amazing time at Les Vaux, treasured memories. Suzanne the owner is an absolute star! The house is large, comfortable and well kitted out. Fantastic wood stove, lovely comfy sofas, lots of hot water, good showers (and a bath). The land that goes with the property is an experience in itself, the river, the birds, the smells.... ahh fantastique! We didnt feel the need to go very far as you can do some lovely walking right from the door and we were looking for peace and quiet, which we got in spades. Wonderful! Thanks again Suzanne x
