Staying in Chemuyil is an authentic Mexican experience!!!
The town itself frequently hosts festivities, soccer matches and markets that you simply will never see in the tourist zones!!!
Besides the Expat subdivision in neighboring Chan Chemuyil (half a mile south), there are still blessedly few foreigners in this quaint town!
Due largely to the employment opportunities from the Adventure Parks, Pyramid ruins and All-Inclusive Hotels in the area, Chemuyil has grown from a humble 20 people in 1990 to a bustling town of over 1200! Because employment is high, the town is much “better off” than most Mexican pueblos.
Chemuyil is family oriented and very community-centered.
The whole community gathers at the soccer field to watch nightly matches.
Children play unsupervised in the early evening at the town park across the street (this is a good indicator of the town's safety)
When it is time to celebrate a birthday, a baptism, a woman's coming of age (quinceanera), or a wedding, entire neighborhood streets are closed to vehicle traffic . Pinatas are hung and the sounds of laughter, dancing and music are quick to follow!
The fruit and vegetable market sets up on Wednesdays and Saturdays a block south of our house.
Garbage pick-up, town cleaners, and a friendly police presence give you a pleasant sense of cleanliness and community.
…and the town truly comes alive during its numerous festivals. The Day of the Dead, Mexico's Independence Day, The Virgin of Guadalupe, Christmas, The January Rodeo, Mardi Gras, and Semana Santa are some of the bigger ones.
Spanish will come in handy in Chemuyil so brush up before you visit.
It is truly a Mexican pueblo. Many locals can speak some limited English, but don’t count on it!

TRANSPORTATION:
WALKING:
groceries, restaurants, The Chemuyil cave, or the local swimming hole (Xunan Ha Cenote) are all within a reasonable walking distance
TAXI:
Chemuyil always has a line of taxis 50 yards from our house
BUS:
The Mexican government subsidizes their public transport system so bus prices are artificially low. Shuttle vans (collectivos) run every 5-10 minutes from about 7AM to 11PM up and down the North South highway that connects Tulum to Playa del Carmen to Cancun. The shuttle vans pick up about 30 yards from our house. Hold a hand in the air and flag one down.
$2.50 per person to go from Chemuyil to Tulum or Chemuyil to Playa Del Carmen
CAR RENTAL:
Truly, there is soooo much to do in the area, you will not regret the convenience and mobility of having your own wheels.

Great centrally located casa in a super little town. Loved it there
Three story house with a master suite on all floors. All the cooking stuff you need to make your own meals. Right across the street from a playground and small grocery store.

Great house, great puebla and fun nightlife at La Palapa for whole family
Wonderful, spacious house fully equipped with beach gear and 4 bikes. Nearby cenote to swim was fun. Best trip for our little kids was Tulum ruins +boat tour to snorkel with sea turtles. We also loved coba ruins and cenote (tankah-ha). Ryan was always available by homeaway app eg to troubleshoot how to turn on air conditioner. Top floor was great family hangout in evenings. Highly recommend this house!

Spacious clean house in a great location
We stayed here in at the end of March/beginning of April - a family of 4 with a 13 year old boy and 15 year old girl. Both kids loved the house and didn't want to come home. This house is in a wonderful little Mexican town that is close to many beautiful beaches and cenotes as well as other attractions. The house and town are exactly as described in the owner's description. The house has lots of room - more than enough room for a family of 4 - and the town is in a great location with lots of collectivo's continually cycling through the town as well as a taxi stand. A vehicle rental can be useful for getting around but we drive a lot at home and were happy to ride the collectivos. With the house rental there is a the beach shade - very important as some beaches have no shade. We also got a lot of use out of the coolers and the bikes. As stated in the description, there are dogs running around and the sounds of the town (barking dogs, chickens/roosters crowing, and well as town parties) might disturb sleep. We were prepared for this and brought earplugs although we never had a need to use them. With the air conditioning on at night, we didn't find our sleep disturbed at all. To us, the sounds are part of the experience of staying in a small Mexican town. If you are looking to get away from touristy towns and big resorts and would like to experience a small authentic Mexican town, this is the place to stay. This is a town of working people and Mexican families. Being a pueblo there where not many other tourist around except at night when some would make their way in for supper at the restaurants. We always felt safe. The kids were very happy biking around the town and comfortable enough to go to the grocery store themselves. And the house is very comfortable - like being at home. Some awesome things about the town: easy transportation, grocery store that is almost always open and has fresh buns, beer stores, many little local food stands to get some local dishes as well as a few restaurants (La Palapa, Leo's pizza). And because the town is small, everything is close and takes only a couple minutes to walk to. The owners (Ryan and Manon) are extremely helpful and honest - everything in their description is accurate. Any time we had questions, they were quick to respond with lots of great advice for places to visit and how to get around. We would definitely come back here if we get a chance to return to the area.

The Yellow House <3 Wish we could have stayed another few weeks...
We had a fantastic stay at Casa Amarilla. We spent two weeks there and wished we could have stayed longer. The house quickly felt more like home than I had expected it would. It is spacious and comfortable. The 3rd floor terrace is an especially nice place to relax. Chemuyil is a rare find: it offers the full and rewarding experience of traveling to a small Mexican town with the convenience of a few friendly and delicious restaurants a few steps away, a reasonably stocked grocery store across the street (get the fresh tortillas!), and a swimming hole within walking distance, and also has very easy access to endless sites and activities along the Mayan Riviera. We visited Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and lots of beautiful beaches in between, but we were always glad to be staying in Chemuyil, which is somehow very peaceful despite the barking dogs and the occasional party next door. We did have to turn the power back on one night and did have an issue of no water one morning, but we just asked at the grocery store and they quickly connected us with the woman who takes care of the house and she fixed the issue right away (turned out to be a great way to interact with our neighbors and practice some Spanish). Ryan was a great host, incredibly responsive for this issue and with any questions that we had. We had our 2.5 year old son and 4 month old baby with us and it was a really easy place to be with them. Our son is still talking about the yellow house, the playground, the fruit truck that passed by and sold us mangos and watermelon, the water truck, the cenote and the beautiful beaches. We hope to go back again soon.

Perfect if you're looking for a more authentic experience!
Our family of six stayed at Ryan's house over the New Year and feel we got what was promised to us -- a clean and spacious and affordable house in the midst of a "true Mexican pueblo" versus the all-inclusive resort options that are readily available. Perfect for a larger family who needs to spread out. We rented a car with Easy Way with no problems. Ryan was so helpful about providing suggestions for things to do and we took advantage of many of them. He provides detailed house instructions as well. We went to Coba ruins and stopped at the recommended cenotes nearby (timed it really well as four tour buses arrived as our family was leaving), rented a moped and jeep on Cozumel and spent a couple days at Xcacel Beach -- way nicer than the crowded beaches of Bahia Principe. We opted to forego adventure tours this time around. Part of the experience for us was choosing the authenticity of Ryan's place, walking through the town, eating at the wonderful local places and letting our kids practice the Spanish they've been learning in school. We loved just hanging on the terrace playing games together in the morning. The biggest downside is that authenticity comes with more noise. Music and barking dogs into the wee hours. The lower level bedrooms are more insulated that the top floors which have windows directly to the outside. We made some suggestions to Ryan about replacing some broken beach items and he quickly and kindly attending to every suggestion. A wonderful host! All in all, a truly memorable vacation and I would highly recommend Ryan's house to those looking for a cultural experience!
