About Barbara Smalley, Vacation Rentals Cartagena
I've lived most of my life in the U.S. but have also lived for a couple of months to up to two years in different countries: Germany, Spain, Australia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico & Belize. Since 2011 I've been living a somewhat nomadic lifestyle while exploring, working & volunteering in new & old places in North, Central & South America (including 2 years teaching in Cartagena, Colombia) and Europe. I started working with vacation rentals on behalf of a couple who own property in Colombia & Belize. I came back to Colombia for a work-related visit in 2015 and couldn't resist buying this apartment as it has everything: balcony, beachfront, pool in the building, in a residential area, and only a 10 minute walk to the Old City. Casa Barbara Cartagena is a quiet oasis with a great view! I also partner with 'Pack for a Purpose', an organization that links travelers who'd like to help fulfill wish lists of non-profits in developing countries. In Cartagena, I work with Fundación Pescador de Letras, a community organization in that helps underprivileged children in the La Boquilla area north of the airport, as well as Cartagena Paws, an animal rescue group, and would love to have your help!

We would not hesitate to return
We spent a wonderful four weeks in Cartagena at Casa Barbara, and everything exceeded our expectations. The apartment is a 10 minute walk from the old city, overlooks the beach and was very comfortable with all amenities. The long balcony facing the sea was so enjoyable and Edificio Zafiro is beautifully maintained by friendly, courteous staff, and the doormen were always very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Renting from Barb was an absolute pleasure from start to finish, and she couldn’t have been more responsive and helpful. Tara, Barb’s associate, was just as responsive and helpful, and Mary kept the place spotless with seemingly boundless energy. We would not hesitate to return; highly recommended. - David, January 2019
Thrilled you enjoyed your stay so much; hope you can indeed return sometime! Thank you so much for the nice review & happy to have been able to host your nice family.
Great apartment with amazing view!
My friends and I stayed at Casa Barbara and it completely exceeded our expectations. The oceanview from both bedrooms was breathtaking, and the apartment itself was excellently decorated. It had all the amenities you could ask for, like strong wifi, a washer/dryer, A/C, and hot water, plus some added bonuses like a coffee maker and hair dryers. Everything was clearly labeled with instructions for easy use, and on the coffee table there was a book that provided great tips for what to do during our stay! On many days we took a quick 10 minute walk to the walled city to explore in the mornings and then spent the afternoons relaxing by the pool (which also has an oceanview). There was also a supermarket on the way back to the apartment from the walled city where we bought our groceries.
It was the perfect place to spend a relaxing stay!
Muchas gracias!! Hope you can come back soon for some more pool & balcony time!
Stunning views from the balcony, delightful sea breezes, immaculately maintained & well-equipped apartment, very informative & responsive host -- we couldn’t have asked for anything more! Casa Barbara was the perfect place for an extended stay for my son and me while volunteering in and exploring Cartagena. From the information that Barbara provided, we knew how to easily navigate to the Old City and beyond, arrange for a home cooked Colombian meal, purchase fresh fruit/vegetables from the nearby vendor, join a Salsa/Latin dance class, dine on delicious meals at local restaurants, visit museums on “free days” :-) , and more. Next time we will consider availing ourselves of Spanish classes also! I would highly recommend Casa Barbara!
Thank you for staying in Casa Barbara & for supporting the Cartagena community with your volunteer efforts! Glad it worked well for you & look forward to your return!
Fantastic location, clean, with a pool!
Four of us stayed at Casa Barbara in April, 2018. We had a fabulous stay in this beautifully maintained condo. The beds are comfy, we loved having 2.5 baths, beach and bath towels are readily available, and we were so pleased to have wifi, AC, hot water, and a washer/dryer! The kitchen is well equipped and everything is modern and clean. The view from the balcony is incredible, and the hammocks are a wonderful touch. Building security is good, and the pool is a wonderful option. The location is conveniently located to both the airport and the Old City. Barbara communicated well throughout the process, and we loved having all of the provided information about tours, places to visit, and things to do. We will stay here again!
That view definitely is the best...especially when relaxing in a hammock!! :) Thanks for staying & your nice words; look forward to your return!
Best rental I have ever stayed in
My husband and I have just had the most outstanding rental experience we've had in our 40 years of renting property. There wasn't one thing we might have wanted or needed that wasn't there already--with clear instructions on how to use everything. The building was well run. The landlord was welcoming and very gracious and helpful. I would stay in this property again. It was very clean and very comfortable.
Wow, what an honor to receive such a nice review -- we are blushing! Thank you very, very much; so glad you had a good stay & I do hope you will return!
Super comfortable and clean apartment overlooking the Caribbean. The breeze off the ocean was luscious, the perfect distance from the old city. Wifi was strong and consistent. Very much enjoyed the cooking lessons provided by Mari. Learned how to make patacónes, coconut rice and local fish recipes. Barb was a great resource for history, shopping and festive outings. Looking forward to another visit.
Thank you for your nice review -- thrilled you had a great, relaxing stay & especially that you ate well! :) Hasta la próxima vez!
I love Cartagena's Old Walled City, but I also love a modern building by the beach with a pool -- this building is an 11 minute (per Goo gle) walk or a US$2 taxi ride to/from the Old Walled City, so is the best of both worlds. It's located in the Cabrero section which is quiet & residential. The historic Rafael Nuñez House and Apollo Park with chapel is a short walk away (on the way to the Old City). The beach is across the street.
There is a pharmacy/mini-mart on the building's ground floor, another mini-mart/fast food place around the corner, a larger grocery store about a 5 minute walk away, and a cute burger/beer place just a couple of minutes walk also. There are a handful of other small restaurants/grocery stores also nearby.
The magical Old City itself is steps away -- you'll love wandering the maze of quaint streets with their colonial architecture, shops, restaurants, museums & little plazas.
The apartment is a 5-10 minute/COP$10-12,000 (~US$4) taxi ride from the airport, a less than 5 minute/COP$6,000 (~US$2) taxi ride in to the Old City, a 5-10 minute/COP$8,000 (~US$3) taxi ride away from other sites/areas, such as San Felipe Castle (the huge old Spanish fort) or the tourist dock (for the boats to the Rosario Islands, where many prefer to go for the beach). Taxis are readily available.
Walking during the day is also a great option (it's about 10 minutes to the Old City), but I advise bringing a hat and an umbrella to ward off the equatorial sun! Taxis are advised at night.
