About this property

Wonderful ocean view, private pebble beach, great hospitality

The Bosun's Chair reflects the Nautical character of the owner - a Transport Canada certified Ship's Master and a Canadian Recreational Yacht Association certified sailing instructor.
Nestled on the shore of St. Ann's Bay, The Bosun's Chair has mountains in the back yard and an ocean beach in the front yard.
There are 4 bedrooms in the older 'main' portion of the house, with 2 bathrooms - one upstairs (complete with jacuzzi tub) and one on the main floor adjacent to the front entry. All the downstairs floors are local hardwood. The upstairs floors are red pine, the ceilings are white pine.
Appliances include refrigerator, oven, microwave, washer and dryer. All bedding is supplied as well as all dishes, silverware, various kitchen utensils, coffee makers, pots, pans, etc. In short - just bring your own clothes!
The Captain, when he's not at sea, maintains a small apartment attached to the back of the main house (questions and concerns are dealt with promptly).
The Bosun's Chair is situated in an ocean-front rural setting. The nearest grocery store is in either the lovely village of Baddeck or in North Sydney - the mainland terminus for the Newfoundland ferry. Ditto for the nearest gas stations, so guests are advised to purchase foodstuffs and gasoline before arriving at the house.
The Captain also operates a small sailing school on his 37' Tayana sailboat. More info on this can be found at cruiseandlearn.org .

Wonderful Stay
This little house is everything I expected it to be. Quiet, lovely and relaxing. This is the first time using Verbo and it did not disappoint. The owner was super nice and very hospitable, giving us a small tour of the home. There was plenty of information left on a table to give us ideas of what was in the area. The best coffee press! I had to go buy my own after using it :) Thank you Daniel for sharing your home with us. I would definitely stay again.

Good home base to explore Cape Breton
Older property with a "cabin in the woods" feel. The home was perfect for our 3 night stay in Cape Breton. The central location made it easy to explore the area.

Lovely place very comfortable and quiet
Very easy to find and check in was easy and accurate. Daniel was there to show us around and show us where everything was. Extra supplies were stored in a back room for us. Daniel was available if we needed him, however everything went really well. My friends and family all had a great time and loved the place. Very clean and comfortable. I recommend this place to anyone. We will return again in the future.

Family trip
We had a great stay. The property is exactly as listed. Danny was very friendly. The view was outstanding and we could hear the waves against the rocks and loons at night. Highly recommend!

Cape Breton's finest!
I was in Cape Breton to attend a funeral. Coming back to Daniel's home was so comfortable. The property was peaceful. and the large home was so inviting. It had all the amenities I needed and felt like home. The beach was very nice and there were small caves at low tide. Lots to explore. Daniel was so accomodating to allow visitors who had missed the funeral. I'm sure he wondered why the guests, other than myself were changing regularly. He even allowed for a late check out as I had surprise last minute guests. Thanks for the awesome holiday!

About the host

Hosted by Daniel Robinson

Host profile image
Danny has had a number of careers over his 68 years, from lobster fishing to reforestation contractor, whale-watching skipper and sailor, carpenter and journeyman ceramics installer, forestry equipment designer and manufacturer. He also studied biology at Cape Breton University. His present passion (along with sailing) is digital 'single lens reflex' camera photography.

Why they chose this property

Danny originally bought the property because of it's proximity to a wonderful and vibrant group of artisans/musicians/friends that he had been a part of since the early seventies. As well as being close to his 'peeps', the setting in Jersey Cove was incredible, with St. Ann's Bay in the front yard, 300 meter-high mountains in the back yard, and peaceful St. Ann's Harbour only 1/2 kilometer down the road.

What makes this property unique

A bosuns' chair is a seat similar to the type in which the senior crew-member on a sailing vessel is hoisted up the mast in order to work on the rigging. There is an actual bosuns' chair installed on a ceiling beam between the kitchen and living room of the house which serves as an indoor swing (children love it).
Perhaps the most unique benefit of staying at the Bosuns' Chair is the fact that the owner/operators of the house also operate a sailing school aboard a beautiful 37' sailboat, and offer lessons to guests at 1/2 price.
