About Daniel Robinson
Danny has had a number of careers over his 68 years, from lobster fishing to reforestation contractor, whale-watching skipper and sailor, carpenter and journeyman ceramics installer, forestry equipment designer and manufacturer. He also studied biology at Cape Breton University. His present passion (along with sailing) is digital 'single lens reflex' camera photography.
Daniel Robinson purchased this Farmhouse in 1987
Why Daniel Robinson chose Englishtown
Danny originally bought the property because of it's proximity to a wonderful and vibrant group of artisans/musicians/friends that he had been a part of since the early seventies. As well as being close to his 'peeps', the setting in Jersey Cove was incredible, with St. Ann's Bay in the front yard, 300 meter-high mountains in the back yard, and peaceful St. Ann's Harbour only 1/2 kilometer down the road.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
A bosuns' chair is a seat similar to the type in which the senior crew-member on a sailing vessel is hoisted up the mast in order to work on the rigging. There is an actual bosuns' chair installed on a ceiling beam between the kitchen and living room of the house which serves as an indoor swing (children love it). Perhaps the most unique benefit of staying at the Bosuns' Chair is the fact that the owner/operators of the house also operate a sailing school aboard a beautiful 37' sailboat, and offer lessons to guests at 1/2 price.

Rustic charm, cozy, quiet cottage in central Cape Breton
Six adults had plenty of room to stay, relax, cook together in this charming, rustic cottage on St. Anne's Bay. Very comfortable beds, plenty of good books to browse and lots of room to relax! Loved our stay!
We enjoyed our stay
Great house to ride out Dorian hurricane
Clean, beautiful house. Needs stereo, Wood stove sadly was disabled. Access to beach is challenging for older adults with 2 steep parts. Beach is off the lot, across a road. But having said that, we rode out a big storm without fear. although we had to provide our own candles and matches in anticipation of power outages. Would recommend this comfortable home with some reservations.
The Bosun's Chair has an AM FM stereo cd player.
Sadly, insurance companies will not allow potentially inexperienced guests to operate airtight wood heaters in guest accomodation units.
In case of power outages, the Bosuns Chair provides propane storm lanterns, a propane camp stove and gravity-feed well water (no electicticity needed).
Jolie maison de campagne
Belle maison mais la propreté serait à améliorer. Literie à améliorer. Taches sur les tapis et couvre lit
Perfect for family
My husband and I took our 3 children here for a five day Cape Breton adventure.
Home is accurately described and was very nice to return to after busy days of sightseeing and hiking.
Danny's neighbours were also very helpful and kind.
The pebble beach and fishing were highlights.
Danny, the property owner, was great at communicating about the house and checking to see that we were OK. We found the rental to be just as described and loved the area as a jumping off point for our time in Cape Breton. It was a restful vacation. We would stay again if in the area.
Situated on the Old Cabot Trail, approximately half way between Baddeck and Ingonish, the Bosun's Chair is 2 km from the scenic Englishtown Ferry and 2 1/2 km from Donelda's Puffin Tours. There are a number of local hiking trails and a multitude of craft shops - most attached to their studios.
Due to our rural location, guests are advised to purchase any foodstuffs and gasoline they need in either Baddeck, Ingonish, or North Sydney before arriving at the house.
DIRECTIONS to Bosun's Chair:
If you arrive through the Halifax airport, turn north onto Hwy 102 towards TRURO. 64 km later turn right at exit 15E onto Hwy 104 (the Trans-Canada Highway) towards NEW GLASGOW. After 168 km you will cross a causeway with bridge and then you will enter a round-about (beside the round-about is a tourist information building where you will find a great deal of information about Cape Breton Island - and directions if you're feeling confused ;). Take the second exit off the round-about (going up a steep hill) onto Hwy 105. Drive on Hwy 105 for 103 km, then turn left at exit 11 onto the CABOT TRAIL. Stay on the Cabot Trail for 27 km, until you reach a 'T' intersection with Hwy. 312. There is a red flashing light at this intersection. You must turn either left or right - turn RIGHT. Drive another 6 km and you will see a white sign in the shape of a sail on the right side of the road with 'Bosuns Chair' written on it. That's us!
The address of the house is 1691 Hwy 312, Englishtown NS.
The co-ordinates for the house are: N46 degrees 18.758 minutes
