Interesting house in a lovely village
We had a very nice time staying in Pigazzano. The house is rustic and could do with a little updating. The garden is lovely with lots of privacy and shade. Pigazzano is a great little village from which we could take the dog for a walk and also easily explore the surrounding area. Both Davide and Patrizia were extremely helpful with all our questions and gave us lots of information about the local area.
Pigazzano - Castellina
Everything was okay
We had a nice holiday in the property like a castle. Everything was correct and in the same way like in the description. The owner provided a good customer service and a very good communication before and during the holiday, although we had different languages (german, italian, english). According to desire (as requested), we could pay the rent in cash at arrival. The property was clean and well-mantained. We could recommend the property and the owner to a good friend.
Thank you very much for your review. I am happy that you enjoyed your stay, we would be glad to have you again if you come back to Piacenza!
Off the beaten path in a charming hill village
We stayed 6 nights in the stone house in Pigazzano with our two children, ages 17 and 14. The house seemed almost magical with Rapunzel's tower and a wardrobe big enough to hold Narnia inside. It is an old house but well maintained and stocked with all you need to cook and enjoy your stay. The wifi and plumbing worked very well. Beds were comfortable with the exception of the tower room. Patrizia, the owner, was very flexible and easy to work with, and provided really helpful information about the house and things to do locally.
We prefer to stay away from heavily touristed areas and cook some meals for ourselves, so this house was great for us. Pigazzano is a tiny village with 20 residents (according to Wikipedia) and one restaurant. We ate there on the night we arrived. The menu featured delicious local Piacentese specialities such as tortelli with mushroom sauce and pisarei e faso, a bean and dumpling dish. The nearby church has a beautiful panoramic view of the valley. Every day we admired the cyclists who worked hard to ride up the 4km of narrow, twisty roads to the top of the hill.
While we were there, Pigazzano celebrated a 3-day annual festival featuring more local food specialities and local bands (with accordions) playing traditional music and American pop / disco favorites. We enjoyed having our dinner at the festival one night.
We also enjoyed visiting Rivergaro, the nearby town, to get groceries, bread, gelato, and restaurant meals.
For outings we went to Cinque Terre, Parma (for a food tour), Bobbio, and to Pietra Parcellano -- a rocky outcrop that looks like a meteorite, but isn't. If you go to Bobbio, bring your bathing suit -- the river there is great for swimming.
Be aware that the staircase to the second floor is quite steep -- the house would not be appropriate for a person with mobility problems. Also, it's important to use the plug-in mosquito repellent devices (they plug into the electrical outlets) -- we got a few bites before we figured that out.
Overall, I would recommend the house for families or groups who want to get away from it all and enjoy an authentic Italian village experience, while still being within an hour or two of many cities and tourist attractions.
Thank you very much, it's a real pleasure to know that you enjoyed your stay. And also a special thanks for the comment about the repellent devices: they are so common here that we tend to assume everyone will know how to use them - I will make sure to add a note in our welcome pack!
Something For Everyone
When in Rome do as the Romans do, but when in Pignazzo do as the locals do whilst staying here and you will have a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
The house is everything and perhaps a little more than is detailed in the write up. The yard is spacious enough for grown ups to relax and enjoy or young children to run off some of their energy. The bedrooms are large and equipped with plenty of storage. The kitchen is suitably equipped for the solo chef to work with all the local ingredients in creating a daily showpiece. The dining room has enough space for a good dinner party or do as we did and enjoy al fresco as much as you desire. The location is shaded from the intense summer sun and due to its elevation a couple degrees cooler than the river valley below.
The house was very well-maintained but also retains the best aspects of an authentic stone house experience. The owner was efficient, punctual and incredibly flexible in all of our dealings. When we had a concern during our stay, our needs were dealt with in a timely fashion.
As we have two small children we choose to enjoy many of the local splendors, the local trattoria for a sensational daily espresso and simpler joys such as dancing fireflies our two year old confused with flying stars each evening (we didn't have the heart to correct him).
Our guests who were far more ambitious than us (and child-free), managed day trips to Cinque Terre, Venezia, and Lago Di Como as well.
Sensational supplies for foodies are available not far down the hill (5km) from the house at a number of supermarkets. Gelati and and freshly made filled pasta are available nearby too.
A water park is within 10 mins drive of the property which was perfect for us and made it non-essential for a trip to the sea when mother nature really turned up the heat.
If you are seeking a quiet and genuine Italian experience a little off the main track, but with a very high price-quality ratio my family and I recommend this house, this village and this owner. Grazie Patrizia!
Pigazzano is a charming village on the hills, a perfect base for trekking and mountain biking. There's a typical bar in the main square, only a couple of minutes walk from the property, while the ancient church with terrace overlooking the valley offers a gorgeous sight. The main town is Piacenza, one of the most renowned Italian cities for the arts, with many historical palaces often with splendid gardens. Bobbio, located higher on the hills, is also a small jewel. Main sights include the Abbey, founded by St. Columbanus in 614, and Ponte Vecchio, commonly known as Hunchback Bridge for its particular form and also Devil’s Bridge: the famous legend tells that it was built by the Devil in one night after he made a pact with St. Columbanus who promised him the soul of the first passerby; but when the bridge was finished, the Irish Saint sent a dog. Other excursions by car include Parma, Milano, Liguria coast, Bologna, Venice, Florence. 65km from Fidenza Outlet shopping center.
