About this property

600 Year-old House with Spectacular View in the Heart of Medieval Village

Experience the soul and glamour of Provence in a location that provides you with easy access to both the quaint French countryside of medieval villages, vineyards, and olive groves and the sophisticated French Riviera with it’s relaxing beaches and rich culture. Claviers, a medieval hill-top village of 600 people located in the foothills of the French Alps, serves as your gateway to both of these worlds.

Immerse yourself in the daily lives of the Claviersiennes and create your own enjoyable experiences using L'Orac, a six hundred year-old stone “townhouse” or maison de village, as your convenient home base. L'Orac is in the heart of the village and only an hour from the Nice Airport and the French Riviera where you can enjoy the beaches, shopping and culture in Nice, Antibes, Cannes, San Raphael and St. Tropez. The Gorges du Verdon or the “Grand Canyon of France” is only 45 minutes from Claviers – a prime area for sports enthusiasts who like to hike, rock climb, kayak, hang glide, and road and mountain bike.

L'Orac has three main floors, each with its own bathroom, shower and refrigerator. The third floor has a kitchen with a salon and another level above it where there is a bedroom adjoined by a terrace that features a spectacular view of the Esterel Mountains on the Mediterranean coast. There are two single beds and one double bed on the first floor; a single and a double bed on the second floor; and a double bed in the third floor apartment.

The house has WiFi and you can use the phone to call anywhere in the U.S. free of charge.

A unique and charming getaway
The house was unique as it made the most of a very narrow and tall 600 yr. old building. It was nestled on a narrow street in a very small medieval town. It had everything you would need but you need to be prepared to operate in more confined spaces. Getting to the town required navigating beautiful but very twisty and windy streets. The host was great to work with and provided lots of useful information. If you're a biker who likes hills then this is a good place for you. If you're looking for something more conveniently located then you may want to consider a different option.

Exceeded All Expectations - FairyTale location in heart of SE France
I generally have high standards and expectations when it comes to vacations, and these were exceeded owing to this ideal property in a medieval village with access to canyons, mountains, Nice, Monaco and the Mediterranean (Saint Tropez) all within 55-75min drive. Claviers itself is an unspoiled gem, and the house has the most breath-taking terrace view of stars, the moon, and hills for miles. We spent many breakfasts and dreamy charcuterie evenings there, recalling a day's adventures. What made the roomy and fully equipped property even more exceptional, is the care and detail that the owner, Mr. Stamp, invested to ensure visitors are well supported. His excellent recommendations for day excursions whether you have a week in the region or more, and which we followed, included breathtaking canyon hikes, local vineyards, secluded castles, authentic town markets, pampered Tropezian beach days, cycling on Med Isles and the best that Nice and Monaco have to offer. Precious family memories for a lifetime :)

Excellent!
We loved this place in Claviers! We were two families traveling together. The three different rooms/apartments provide plenty of space, the upstairs apartment and terrace are completely charming, and the owner and manager are on top of every detail. We rented a car to see the many beautiful sights/towns/markets/beaches. Reasonably priced, beautiful place, great bargain.

Fabulous flat in Provence
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Claviers in this wonderful apartment! Claviers is a delightfully quiet and beautiful village in the heart of Provence. Centrally located, there are countless excursions available to the high alps, Maritime Alps, coast, Nice, and picturesque hilltop villages to numerous to mention. Most of these sites are within an easy hour or less drive. The apartment is nicely furnished and comfortable with an awesome patio overlooking the valley. There are 3 levels each with beds and separate baths, suitable for a large family or several couples. This is our 4th time in this wonderful flat in Claviers and we're sure to come back again!

About the host

Hosted by Andy Stamp

Host profile image
Andy Stamp is an avid cyclist, sailor, and professional ski instructor who spent the past seventeen years visiting his aunt in Claviers where she moved from the United States at age 70. She memorialized her eighteen-year adventure in her book, "Still Time." Andy is very familiar with the villages, history, activities and cycling routes in Provence and he is happy to lead you on tours of the Provencal countryside or give you suggestions that will help personalize and enrich your experience.

Why they chose this property

Andy fell in love with the area on his first visit and he bought L'Orac from his aunt seventeen years later when she returned to the United States.

What makes this property unique

L'Orac provides you with an authentic and intimate experience of living in a medieval French village where you are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of olive groves and vineyards; medieval architecture and history; and the friendly people who live there. Each day gives you opportunities for unique experiences, which range from shopping in the village markets, to engaging in scores of outdoor sports/activities to taking day trips to the Riviera beaches. It's possible to ski in the French Alps in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon from this location.
