About this property
The Townsman: Faulkner Room
The Faulkner Room, located on the third floor and is alley-facing, blends modern touches with the atmosphere of a more romantic era. Staying here is like settling into a private sitting room filled with literary ramblings and evening plans. (**Please note the Townsman is currently undergoing a "refresh" ready Feb 1st 2025. So there may be some furnishings, fixtures or other minor adjustments from the existing photos. New photos will be uploaded soon!**)
This sentimentally styled room is situated in Townsman Hotel. It is unlike your typical hotel. That's why we call it the 'unhotel'. Poised just above or in the middle of Charlottesville's bustling and historical Downtown Mall or the walking mall packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and more. It is in between Mudhouse Coffee and Rockfish Brewing Company, with no staff and no front desk, which feels like a well-kept secret right in the center of all the action. Once you book with us, a personal code will be provided for access and all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles.
Explore the greater Charlottesville area and discover some of the best places to dine, shop, relax, and do a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, shopping, enchanting night life, and navigating through historical sites such as Thomas Jefferson's home of Monticello and the well-known Rotunda, all right below your feet. Start your day with breakfast at The Nook, enjoy wine tastings at local vineyards, and dine at The Alley Light with options for post-dinner drinks or dancing. You may also grab coffee and a workout before relaxing at Halo Salt Spa, enjoy lunch at Citizen Burger Bar, take a self-guided brewery tour, and wrap up with dinner at the Dairy Market and a nightcap at Miller's.
Amenities: Wi-Fi Hairdryer Iron and ironing board Nespresso coffee maker SmartTV Desk Parking off-site - 1 designated spot (within a 3 minute walk)
Like most charming, older buildings, The Townsman is not equipped with an elevator. All of the rooms require access via stairs. Please be mindful that this is a downtown urban pedestrian area with all of the excitement and nuances of a downtown location.

This place was amazing, loved the superb location, the ease of checking in and out, it was beautifully furnished, clean and stocked with everything I needed. I‘m already planning my next visit for 2026! Thank you.
A perfect spot to stay if you want easy access to restaurants and shopping! Top notch cleanliness and attention to detail down to the complimentary coffee and water. Easy bag drop and parking and quick responding owners. Loved the coffee shop directly below. Would definitely stay here again!
Overall excellent. Directions in advance. Parking spot available nearby which helped immensely. Very clean and quiet inside. Nearby dinner at Hamilton's and breakfast at Iron Paffles and Coffee. Will stay there again when in C'ville.
Beautiful, simple room with all the amenities you need for a short stay. Super clean and comfortable. Check-in directions were clear and helpful, and communication was timely.
We loved our stay in the Townsman Faulkner room. It just as beautiful as the photos suggest....the lap of luxury! Very clean....everything looks new. Very supportive king bed. It's a third floor unit, but the owners make clear that all the units are up stairs. The Townsman is literally right on the historic pedestrian mall, convenient to everything, but the room is quiet and isolated from any noise on the mall. It's a wonderful stay and a BARGAIN!!
This guesthouse is super nice. So charming with lots of touches everywhere. You step outside and you are on the Mall in Charlottesville. So much to do, shopping, dining and entertainment. My first time staying there but not my last.
The room was okay. The sink backed up while the water warmed and there is one tiny trash can. The view from the balcony was of a parking lot and electrical wires. There are three bars that blair music until 2 am and then the patrons play music and laugh and talk until 4 am in the parking lot. There is one way into the building and one way out with no fire escape. The worst part was the host never sent me my building or room code, I had to contact them. They told me they had, but that was completely untrue as I was then told I needed to sign a lease. I read through all my information and it clearly stated if you booked online you had agreed to their terms. They still sent me a multi page lease that said I was responsible for everything and I could be fined and removed for infractions. Smoking seemed to be the biggest thing, even though the parking lot and mall reeked of marijuana. Needless to say I didn't appreciate the lie, then the lease. They also neglected to tell me I may have to step over homeless people, urine and other things to get in the building. As a travel professional my best recommendation is to stay at the Omni or the Renaissance. The price is about the same and my trash, towels and coffee get refreshed. The unhotel was unwelcoming.
