About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
Embrace the spirit of the "Switzerland of America" in a setting that perfectly balances rugged frontier history with a welcoming, small-town soul. Stepping out from your Main Street retreat, you are immediately immersed in a walkable mountain community where historic Victorian architecture stands against the dramatic, towering granite walls of the Uncompahgre Valley. The air here carries the scent of mountain pine and the distant mist of the hot springs, creating an atmosphere that is both peaceful and invigorated by high-altitude energy.
Whether you are watching the morning light hit the peaks or joining the evening stroll past flickering streetlamps and local artisan shops, the neighborhood feels like a hidden sanctuary frozen in time. From the rhythmic hum of Jeeps departing for the Alpine Loop to the quiet camaraderie found in local breweries and gourmet eateries, life in Ouray moves at a slower, more intentional pace. It is a place where the grandeur of the wilderness meets the warmth of a close-knit village, offering an authentic Colorado experience that stays with you long after you leave.

What makes this property unique
What makes the Story Block Loft truly unique is its seamless marriage of historic character and high-end modern convenience, situated in the absolute center of Ouray. Housed in a meticulously renovated 1900s brick building, the loft retains an authentic mountain soul with its exposed post-and-beam construction and original brick walls yet feels entirely fresh with upgraded finishes like granite countertops and hickory cabinetry. While many downtown properties lack parking or modern climate control, this residence provides a rare level of ease with its private basement garage, secure storage room, and a full building elevator—features that are nearly impossible to find in a historic Main Street setting.
Beyond its structural charm, the property is defined by an attention to detail that elevates it from a standard rental to a genuine mountain home. The open-concept living space is anchored by a free-standing gas log stove, creating a cozy atmosphere that complements the expansive mountain views visible through large, modern double-pane windows. Guests frequently note that the loft is exceptionally well-provisioned, from a kitchen stocked with high-end culinary essentials and spices to thoughtful extras like a resident guitar for evening relaxation. It offers a sophisticated, "eagle’s eye" perspective of the town and surrounding peaks, allowing you to stay fully immersed in the local energy of shops and breweries while enjoying a quiet, climate-controlled sanctuary above it all.
