Beautiful house in stunning scenery

From booking to arriving Jenny was very efficient. An extensive welcome pack on arrival was very welcome. This is a beautiful, very clean, warm holiday home with a fantastic roof terrace. Many long hikes possible from the door.

Spanish getaway

We spent a little over a week in a quiet, unique Spanish village house. The views were amazing from the roof terrace although we were never sure that we saw the see due to the haze. The house was arranged over four floors and suited two people staying there admirably.

Heaven on earth

Five weeks still wasn't enough time! We loved the property, especially the top terrace with breathtaking views of the mountains and Mediterranean. And the community of Canillas de Albaida was warm and inviting. I HIGHLY recommend staying at Jennifer's lovely home. This was a trip of a lifetime made possible by her.

Lovely traditional house

The house is really beautiful, tastefully furnished and with amazing views from the terrace. The kitchen is very well equipped and the extra kitchen on the top floor is great. The bed is super comfy and the room spacious. The village of Canillas is very quiet and peaceful, with a traditional way of life and is in an area of outstanding natural beauty with superb walks from the doorstep so pack your hiking boots.

Another great stay

We last stayed at Jennifer’s place in 2018 and was great to return to area after the pandemic ! The property was as we remembered and local host, Margot was helpful. We liked to spend time on the roof terrace. It was nice to find our favourite restaurants, bars and shops in village and nearby Competa as welcoming as ever. We got out to do lots of local walks and walked to Competa a few times along track through olive trees and avocado bushes. We look forward to returning in future

Perfect!

We rented this amazing home for a week in February and loved every minute of it. The house is incredibly charming as is the entire village. The area is beautiful and there is no end to the walking you can do. We had amazing weather - everyday sunnier than the next. Pretty sure we’re wearing some extra plaster from a few close calls in the tiny stairway, just adds to the overall charm and you have to laugh about it. ❤️

Perfect Cozy accommodation

Great accommodation for a quiet stay. The additional top floor kitchen and terrace is where we spent most of the time. Views of the village, the mountains and on a clear day the mountains in Morocco. Excellent location for hiking in the mountains. And a fantastic sunset with a “sun downer” from the roof terrace. The village is quiet. Shopping available and a few restaurants. Try the one next to the village pool. You’ll be surprised about the quality of the food. A very nice welcome present was waiting for us. Communication with and information from the owner was excellent.

Fabulous location, great views, friendly people - wonderful vacation.

The house is very charming and the view from the rooftop terrace is breathtaking! Canillas de Albaida is a delightful mountain town and the people are friendly and helpful. There was a lovely and appreciated welcome basket with fruits, breads, wine, chocolates etc. The house is spacious and the bed is super comfortable. We stayed for six weeks and the place had everything we needed – cooking equipment, linens, cleaning supplies, you name it. We were fortunate with the weather (for the most part) and there’s lots of hiking to be done right from the village. A short drive in pretty much any direction offers even more hiking opportunities – mountains, old villages, rivers, hanging bridges and much more. Both Jennifer and Margot were very easy to communicate with, they were both quick to respond and provided great information.

Beautiful village house with all the comforts.

This is a lovely roomy house (over 4 floors) with lots of nice touches. The deck on the top floor has a fridge and a gas cooker so there was no need to trek to the kitchen on the lower floor all the time. The bed was king size and the most comfortable of our whole trip. There were ceiling fans and also an Air Con unit which we didn't need. The kitchen is well equipped and there were lots of condiments to use. There was also a lovely welcome pack with wine, bread and fruit. We were met reliably at the bus and had the offer of help if we needed it (we didn't). A lovely comfortable stay for a week in a beautiful and friendly little village.

Perfect house in a perfect little village!

Whoever wants to explore Andalucia and its beautiful landscapes should definitely stay in this stunning house in the middle of a white mountain village! We had a great time there. The house is even more beautiful in real life than the pictures already show. We had breakfast every morning at the roof terrace and cooked some dinners there which was really fantastic. The house itself was all cleaned up, well equipped and most of all the atmosphere was perfect for us. The little village is very quiet but you also find everything you need there which was really impressing. There are supermarkets, restaurants, a bar and a pharmacy. Margot, who welcomed us there, was such a nice person. She also left us some fruits, bread and wine as a welcome gift there. Everything was perfect and so uncomplicated. We would love to go there again!

Wonderful stay

First, the house! It’s a delightful place in the middle of the old part of Canillas De Albaida village. It’s very cosy and inviting and the decor is rustic and tasteful, completely in keeping with its age! We loved it and even got used to the ‘ducking or grousing’ through the low doorway into the bedroom. It gave it that extra quirkiness which we love. The sun room and roof terrace were fantastic and we spent most of our time there when we weren’t out exploring. All amenities were very good and we loved the idea of extra crockery, kettle, toaster etc. in the sunroom. Breakfast on the terrace watching the ‘Canillas world’ go by was a prolonged occasion. The views were fantastic! The village was beautiful to explore. A labyrinth of streets in which we got lost more than once! Everything you needed was in the village. The local restaurant was good we ate there several times. I would recommend the goat trail walk to Cómpeta. Although we’re not dedicated walkers we really enjoyed this walk several times. Very gentle, once you had got to the top of the village. We’ve never stayed in the cenotre of a village before and this was a fantastic forest experience. Thank you Jennifer for quick and easy correspondence and of course for your lovely home. Thank you too to Margot who ‘found’ us when we arrived and helped us to settle in! We hope to be back sometime!

Dirty and Dangerous House

I was asked if I wanted to pay cash on arrival soon after I paid my deposit. I said yes and was told I would receive a cancellation notice but to ignore it. I was advised by the VRBO owner of my first property that I should not have done this as it meant VRBO would not be able to withhold the money and refund me if there were any problems. The property was extremely dirty. The shower flooded and I hit my head a number of times on the dangerously low arches and I am only 5’2”. I had booked for 17 days but was told there would be no mid stay clean or bed linen change! I was told ‘feel free to clean it yourself if you want’! I was on holiday and was certainly not going to clean dirt left by other people. Electric wires were hanging out the walls where the wall lights are fitted too. The kitchen smells of fish. It is a dark, gloomy, claustrophobic property with dirty grubby cloth chairs and sofa. Mould everywhere in the bathroom. It has 39 dangerous stone steps. I left 4 days early as that was all I could afford to pay out on top of what I paid for the house. I was not refunded by the owner. Do not pay cash on arrival as you will lose all your VRBO rights. The worst property I have ever stayed in!

Wonderful village townhouse, fabulous views, oozes charm

We had a fabulous week staying here over New Year. The house is so characterful and wondrously decorated it even induced us to be tidy! I can't imagine a more charming place to stay. It was full of useful and beautiful things, not the usual holiday cottage tat, and looked like someone lived there and loved it. We used the wood-burning stove and (very good) cooking facilities in the ground-floor kitchen quite a lot because we did great long walks in the nearby mountains everyday and were mostly too exhausted to go out. Also we tried 2 (very nearby) places in Canillas for dinner - edible but only just - maybe it's a seasonal thing. If you don't like cooking it's worth the short and beautiful walk to Competa. We had a BBQ on the roof terrace for one evening meal, a bit chilly in Dec/Jan by the time we'd finished eating, but worth it for the view. It was warm enough to have breakfast on the terrace every morning and on the few occasions we were back in daylight, enjoyed a beer or three watching the sunset. It's a one-up, one-up, one-up, one-up, one-down, so if you aren't happy with lots of stairs it's not for you, but we got used to it. And the house is organised with a mini-kitchen on the top floor so you don't have to carry your breakfast up 4 flights of stairs every morning. A few walks can be done right from the house. We used permutations of the Walk! the Axarquia guidebook and went up Lucero from Fabrique de Luz, only 10 min drive, and did several other walks within similar driving distance. If you don't fancy using guidebooks but like walking the GR249 between the villages (Competa-Canillas De Albaida - Salares - Sedella) are very well marked, and from what we saw of them, very nicely routed. Margot was also very helpful with advice about walks to do, and everything else.

Erholung in wunderschönem Bergdorf

Schönes altes traditionelles Haus, das liebevoll hergerichtet wurde mit Treppen "die nur der bussfertige Mann besteht" (Indiana Jones). Aber genau so wollten wir es!! Problemloser check-in trotz später Ankunft.

About the host

Hosted by Jennifer Gelfgren

Host profile image
I have lived in Spain for nearly 40 years, but recently moved to Sweden with my husband. We bought this lovely village house a few years ago as our base in Spain, but we only manage to get out three or four times a year. Renting out to holiday makers looking for rest and recreation in beautiful surroundings is the perfect way to keep the house alive.

Why they chose this property

We knew exactly what we were looking for when we started to look for a house in Spain: Malaga, because I lived there for many years; a village house, so we can walk to local shops, restaurants and bars; and the Axarquia, because it one of the most beautiful regions in Malaga, near enough to our friends in the capital. The house had already been beautifully renovated by an English designer using traditional materials, and I didn´t have to change anything.

What makes this property unique

I had already fallen in love with the house from the photos I saw on the estate agent´s website, and I was delighted to find that it was exactly as shown. I walked through the cosy kitchen, up the stairs to the spacious sitting room, then to the beautiful bathroom, from there to the large bedroom with its raised wooden floor and built-in wardrobe, and then up the final flight of stairs to the glorious sun room with its stunning views over the sea. I never had a second thought!
