About this property

Sublime Port Townsend Retreat

The world drops away as you drive up our .2 mile driveway and catch a glimpse of the striking modernist home through the trees. The house sits amid towering firs and dramatic madronas atop a low hogsback running through the 6 acre property. The only other building in sight is our barn about 200ft to the east, which is not part of the rental. Walking past the door to the house on the wraparound 600sqft deck, you’ll look down on our private meadow, perfect for frizbee, badminton, or just sitting by the fire pit with a guitar, your friends and family.
There are essentially two bedrooms, the master is conventionally configured with a queen bed, but the second bedroom has a sliding wooden wall, a full size futon on the first floor, and a sleeping loft with a full size bed, and adjacent rooftop atrium. Then there is what we call the 'Kid Ship'... This is a loft space built above the kitchen, with a full size futon- a huge favorite of our kids, and any adult willing to climb a ladder. It isn't suitable for kids under 7. My bedroom of choice is the sunken living room, which has curtains closing it off from the rest of the house, a large stone fireplace, 46' LED TV, 14' ceilings, tons of windows, and a queen size hide-a-bed couch.
If there are members of your party with mobility issues, the main floor, driveway and deck are all in the same plane, and there is a gently sloped road down to the meadow, which can be easily navigated in either a wheelchair or a vehicle. There are deer, colonies of Thatcher ants, Pacific tree frogs, coyotes, herons , ravens, owls, and woodpeckers making frequent appearances when you make a little time for them.

So many fun options here in a quiet secluded art extravaganza!
Our overall impression was very good! It is a very unique and comfortable home with many indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. The owner was so great and prompt to answer any questions. You won't be disappointed here! The artwork is fabulous and of great variety throughout the home. Our family enjoyed soccer, badminton, sliding down the slide from the deck to the lower level ground, ping-pong, drawing at the drafting table, playing with blocks, toys and board games. We did not feel this home was a good fit for seniors with limited capabilities, owing to the difficulty of the shower/tub to get in and out of. Otherwise...it's really a fun home!!

Exceeded our expectations
It’s a magical place and a perfect setting for a family reunion. You just have to experience it because the photos online don’t tell the whole story!

Delightful!!!
We selected this property because it looked delightful. It did not disappoint. It is a great location and very private. We loved the eclectic décor and the layout. It was just the two of us and our dog, but it would be spectacular for a family with children. Our plan was to visit Port Townsend and the parks, which we did, but spent most of our time hanging out on the property. There was plenty to do there and a great local radio station to listen to while we hung out on the deck. The kitchen has everything you need for creating some great meals. The bed in the master was very comfortable with a deck and exercise bike looking out towards the woods. Wonderful! We would highly recommend this home. Becky, Bob and Tater McPeters

Kim grew up in the Port Townsend area, and I met her by chance while I was working at the Hamma Hamma oyster farm. Immediately smitten, I talked a blue streak until she had to go, and when we met again months later in Olympia (1988!) it was clear my sophisticated Washington D.C. yakking had done the trick! We bought the house in PT as Port Townsend is colloquially known, in '98 when Kim got a job in the area. We lived there for three years, and when her employment dried up, couldn't bear to sell. We live in Portland now, where Kim works in the field of her training and passion as an art teacher, and I'm the primary kid wrangler with a little remodeling on the side. We seriously love our place in PT, and look forward to retiring there someday, and living full time in our very special home.

Why they chose this property

In a town best known for it's Victorian era architechture, our house stands out by representing a more recent wave of settlers to the area: Young creatives looking for an inexpensive, picturesque and bountiful setting to build their future in the sixties and seventies. From the winding driveway to the 600 sq ft deck, three gas fireplaces, delightful details abound throughout the property, which is largely undisturbed forest with a plethora of birdlife, deer, coyote, mushrooms, wild rhododendron, and once even a bobcat! In the meadow below the house, we've built a fire pit perfect for warming up any gathering of friends or family as night falls. Looking up into the 'bowl of stars' you'll understand why we couldn't bear to sell when we moved away to Portland in the early '00's.

What makes this property unique

Our property is very private, and we often hear that plans get scuttled in favor of just hanging around the property. The decor is irreverent cross section of the last century's creative threads. In particular we love the almost 50 windows framing lush green portraits of the forest in every room, and the feeling of being much farther from civilization than you actually are. Our well water is similarly 'part of the cure'! High in minerals, and with a distinct odor, you won't ever mistake it for overchlorinated city water.
