Come for the world-famous bioluminescent bay — and stay for the beauty, nature, and charm of Vieques. Tucked just up the hill from the heart of Esperanza, our recently remodeled apartment offers a peaceful retreat with easy access to the island’s best sights.
Enjoy the vibrant waterfront of the Malecón just a short stroll downhill, where you’ll find great restaurants like Christy’s on the Carib and launch points for unforgettable Bio Bay tours. Then return to your quiet, breezy hideaway, away from the noise but close to everything.
Sun Bay Beach is minutes away, and the nearby Department of Natural Resources area is home to dozens of secluded beaches, wildlife, and hiking trails. Most beaches are within a 30-minute drive.
The space includes a comfortable bedroom and living area, both with A/C. The kitchenette features a microwave, dorm fridge, hot plate, kettle, sink, and dishwasher — everything you need to enjoy meals at home (note: no oven).
Free, easy street parking and quick access to taxis make exploring effortless. And yes — horses really do roam free here. Don’t be surprised if they wander by your front door!

About the host
Hosted by Michelle Love

We live here, on Vieques and onsite, full time. I have been visiting since I was a baby. My family had a place here, and I am not a native Viequense, only a transplanted one. If you want to stay with a native/local there are many great places to stay. I love Vieques and it's amazing people, and even the challenges of living here, as those are part of what has protected the island so far. We've done most of the work ourselves (like the epoxy floors) and we are the owners (with our debtors!) who live onsite and are also the cleaners and handypeople, and....we love it here and care about your experience. We used to travel for work and stayed in short term rentals for most of the year most years and we have made this rental into what we would have wanted when we were traveling. It's not perfect, but it seems to work well for most people, and we are happy to do what we can to have it work for you, if you choose to stay with us.
Why they chose this property
It's a small, sleepy village on the south coast of Vieques near the BioBay and was primarily a fishing village in the past. It's where my family home was and it's always felt like home to me. I love being able to walk to the beach, to the stores, to the Malecon, to the restaurants. The entire town of Esperanza is about 8 blocks wide and 8 blocks long so it's all walkable if you like to walk. It's about 1/2 mile to the ocean and about a mile to the entrance to Sun Bay. The tours for the BioBay almost all meet within that mile. I love the community, here people help out, I know my amazing neighbors and I love that!
What makes this property unique
The world's brightest Bioluminescent Bay (according to the Guinness Book of World Records) is here, making this a bucket list place to visit and it's well worth it and amazing. Even after going many times I am in awe each new time I visit it! We are a US Territory, so US cell phones, US currency, USPS (United States Postal Service) etc. all work here which can make it an easy choice for many. Please do know though that it can be very loud here. Many animals roam free here and we don't control their movements. We don't own any ourselves, but they are here. There are roosters and one guest said "your roosters are broken" which is semi-true- they aren't my roosters, we don't have any but they do roam free and make a ruckus, and they aren't broken, but I didn't know that people thought they only crowed at dawn, they can crow all hours of the day and night. We do provide ear plugs and sound machines, though to me it's just bird-song I know it's disruptive to sleep for those not used to it. Horses roam freely here, thus we ask that the gates be kept closed so they don't come in and get scared when they can't easily find their way out. Vieques is a tiny tropical island off the coast of another larger tropical island and has more than 150 beaches and many critters and insects. We do our best to mitigate them and there are still insects and critters. We bait, we plant deterrents, and still there are insects and critters, if that won't work for you, we're probably not a good fit and we wish you the best finding the perfect fit for you. It's unique to have access to so very much natural beauty and that makes it all worth it to us and we hope you love Vieques as much as we do!!!
