About this property
Casa Ocea ~ An Oceanfront Art Retreat
Nestled on the shores of Chuburná Puerto, Casa Ocea blends the craftsmanship of Yucatán artisans, high design and contemporary art. Directly on the Gulf of Mexico, it features four A/C bedrooms with en-suite baths and balconies, office, a chef-designed kitchen, ocean-front pool, a handcrafted ping pong table, and movies on the rooftop. 45 minutes from Merida's airport, it's the perfect blend of casual luxury infused with Yucatán culture on a tranquil island getaway.
This beachfront island home is nestled in the humble Mayan fishing village of Chuburná Puerto, a non-touristy destination with sandy roads and a warm, welcoming local community. Here, life is simple. Travelers seeking an authentic experience will enjoy witnessing a way of life untouched by large-scale tourism.
Casa Ocea is designed to create a unique experience of place. Travelers interested in sandy beaches brimming with shells, multiple shades of green and blue waters, palm trees and exotic birds can experience living amidst Mayan locals, fine contemporary art, and spectacular ocean views.
This residence has been carefully considered to engage the indoor-outdoor spaces which embrace groups. The ocean-facing living room invites guests to gather while birds dip into the infinity pool and dolphins pass in the ocean beyond.
Outside there is a lovely pool and terrace with plenty of space for socializing. There are sunbeds, beach chairs and hammocks to relax in. A hand-made ping-pong table sits under the terrace and easily converts to an outdoor dining table where beautiful sunsets can be toasted. You can have breakfast, lunch or dinner here. Relax as you watch a sailboat float by.
If you get tired of lying by the pool, rocking in a hammock, or looking at the view, the ocean is about 10 steps away. Flag down a fishing boat and buy some crab or fish recently caught or take a stroll along the sea and pick up shells that are part of everyday life here in Chuburná.
There is a well-equipped kitchen for getting creative culinary juices flowing. The bespoke Mayan-inspired dining room sits 8. Try eating breakfast by the garden terrace and dinner by the sea. If you prefer to stay out of the kitchen, we can arrange a Yucatán cook or international chef for your entire stay.
Four bedrooms, each with an individual private bathroom and balcony can accommodate up to eight guests. If you need to slip away to work, there is an office that looks out at palm trees. It can transform into a 5th bedroom if you need extra room. For an additional fee, please let us know if you would a house cleaner to come during your stay.
For more fun, try your hand at poker at the gaming table or connect your computer to our projector and watch movies on the 2nd floor movie screen or 3rd floor rooftop. Rent a sea doo for a day or the week. They will park it in the ocean in front of the house!
Parking is right in front of the house or anywhere on the sand-packed street. You will want to purchase groceries in Merida and smaller items in the market in Chuburná or Chelem. You will need to drive to go out to eat or you can have food delivered.
Our property managers, Veronica and Li, speak English and Spanish. One of them will meet you and show you the house when you arrive.
The house is designed to utilize the crosswinds throughout the property but air conditioning is available downstairs and in all bedrooms, and throughout the downstairs. Please use it when necessary.
For those needing to peel away from the ocean to get hop on a video call, we have high speed fiber optic internet.
Let us know if you would like to have the kitchen stocked for you prior to your arrival. Veronica, our property manager will let you know the cost and will work with you to accommodate your requests.
Tips regarding the air conditioners:
- During the daytime, we prefer to open the doors and allow the sea breeze cool the house.
- At night, about 5 min before going to bed run the AC to cool the bedroom down.
- Remember to have your door, bathroom door and windows closed.
- Please shut your bedroom AC off in the morning.
Tips regarding our generator:
Chuburná is a small, non-touristy fishing village with simple living conditions, and occasional power outages may occur. If the power goes out, our automatic generator will activate after 5 minutes and will power the basic appliances and lights. It can also run the bedroom air conditioners at night or the downstairs air conditioner during the day. Note that the generator can power most of the house, but not all at once, so please avoid using the laundry machines during this time.
If the generator turns on, please contact our property managers immediately. The generator cannot run for more than eight hours without a mandatory one-hour break. Our team will come over to turn it off for you during this break to prevent the motor from overheating. This step is vital to ensure the generator’s proper functioning.
