About this property
Central Austin Luxury Loft - Completely Private
First class finishes in a loft with soaring wooden ceilings and privately attached to our historic home. Quiet, comfortable, and 1 mile from the UT Memorial Tower and 1.5 miles from the Texas Capital. We are happy to open our loft to guests (2 max) who want to be close to but not quite downtown. NOTE: 9% LOCAL HOTEL OCCUPANCY TAX INCLUDED IN PRICE; 6% STATE TAX WILL BE ADDED TO TOTAL WHEN BOOKING.Fully licensed by City of Austin, but AirBnB won't let us post the STR#.
Located within earshot of the UT Memorial Tower bells in Pemberton Heights subdivision (west of UT), our newly constructed, single bedroom 500 square foot garage apartment is like your own little oasis away from home, more like the Four Seasons (without the bar or the people-watching or the bill) than someone's house. The loft is located above our garage with stairs leading to a private entrance. The interior has oak floors in keeping with the original house built in 1930, a 15-foot vaulted ceiling covered with vintage reclaimed wood, a murphy bed with an incredibly comfortable, organic, queen-size mattress, high thread count sheets and a light down comforter, a 55" flat screen TV positioned in front of a comfortable down-filled sofa, a spa-like bathroom (shower only) with new towels, blow dryer, some extra accessories if you forget yours, a Nespreso coffee machine (with ample supply of capsules for your morning coffee), a dishwasher, small fridge (usually with enough beer, wine and milk to get you started, but no guarantees if we have not been around to shop, so be sure to ask!) & microwave. The kitchenette is stocked with plates, cups, bowls and silverware.
But, who wants to cook on vacation in Austin? We are less than 2 miles from the UT stadium & campus, 1.7 miles to Whole Foods market, 2.4 miles from the W Hotel downtown, so close to all of Austin's hotspots. No need to get on the freeway at all. So, come enjoy a long weekend in our new, securely tucked-away apartment in one of central Austin's most historic neighborhoods. Our spot is quiet and on a half-acre lot, but conveniently located for quick access out of the neighborhood. Free parking is available. We'll even loan you a bike if needed.
Free wifi & a desk with an ergonomic chair if you must do some work!
We have a central vacuum system to keep the apartment as dust free as possible and pets and smoking are never allowed.
The apartment only but if you need to store luggage in the garage we can usually work out some arrangement.
As much or as little as you would like. This is our home and we usually live here, but the apartment has a completely separate entrance through an electrically operated side gate. You may see us through a living room window if we are home when you walk by. Since the apartment is above our garage you may hear us leave in the morning or on occasion we may return late in the evening, but we normally do not leave before about 7:15 on school days (later on weekends) and we almost never stay out past 11. The garage opens quietly with a gear-driven motor rather than a clunky chain-drive. There is an automatic security light that comes on with motion when it is dark and you would see the light when it comes on. We ask our kids not to play basketball when we have guests, but the hoop is over the driveway out front.
It's quiet, lovely and close to all of Austin's hot spots. I also love the historic homes here, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Austin.
We are about one mile from the UT campus, and two miles from the Texas Capitol. You can often use Car2Go because we are in the home area. Lyft and Uber used to get you downtown for between $4 and $6. Now you can use other apps such as RideAustin or Fare and pay a bit more, but it's not bad.
The air conditioning is a zoned system where the apartment is its own zone, but the return air is shared with our kitchen/family room. Very occasionally guests might smell us cooking, but we don't normally cook curries (though we love them, there are great options for buying nearby!) and we have a powerful exhaust fan over our range. Only very sensitive people are likely to be bothered.
Also, since we recently had a guest who described our place as "very hot" when it was 69 degrees inside the apartment, we should note that Austin is often a hot city both literally and figuratively and if you can't sleep when it is 73 degrees in the apartment during the warmer months because it is too hot, you might be too high-maintenance to stay here. That guest dialed the thermostat down to 55. If you do that we will be freezing in the family (URL HIDDEN); makes me shiver to remember those nice folks from NYC!

About the host
Hosted by Michelle Kinney
My husband & I both love to travel. We have seen a lot of the world together and have dragged our two children (20) and 18) with us since they were babies. We have both lived in Europe. My Mother is German so I have family in Bavaria. I went to high school in Germany & Italy. My husband studied in Germany and speaks fluent German. He now has a legal headhunting firm. I used to work in advertising, but now I'm working in real estate. We love Austin as it is an easy place to live, has an educated community, great food options, shopping, is health conscious and the weather is great except it can be HOT in the summer! We also like to ski! We hope either our apartment in Austin or our home in East Hampton will help you relax!
Why they chose this property
We chose our home because it is historically significant and it located in one of the older neighborhoods of Austin. In building our garage apartment, the historical commission (and good taste) required us to match the architecture of the rest of the house, which involved sourcing brick from the same company and the same place it was first manufactured for the rest our house almost 90 years prior. We love the location of our neighborhood, just one mile west of the UT campus and 1.5 miles from the capitol of Texas.
What makes this property unique
We love our home because it's right in the heart of the city of Austin but it has the charm and ambiance of an old-time house in the country. We love fine details, and we have a lot of them incorporated in our guest apartment, including wood covered ceiling, architectural drama, and first-class cabinet work. Where plumbing is concerned, we think a handheld shower head is key to a great shower, as well as the unlimited hot water one can get from a gas-fired instant hot water heater. Small nooks, fine carpets, a first quality mattress, and great sheets are all things that make us love our place.
