Jane and Murray bought what would become Grouseland in 1995. When they first saw the originally 20-acre property, it had an abandoned cabin shell and an impossible driveway. But it held tremendous promise.

When Jane and Murray first got the property, they were constantly given heart attacks by Grouse exploding at their feet. It was obvious that there were a lot of Ruffed Grouse (PA’s State Bird) on the land. And despite President William Henry Harrison's home estate being named Grouseland, they believed he just did not serve long enough to warrant not using the name. Thus, they established Grouseland Tours in 1998. Originally a Bicycle Tour and shuttle company as well as Cannondale Dealership.

Since then, they turned the ransacked cabin into a comfortable place to live, purchased an additional 80 acres, planted 150+ fruit trees and bushes, built gardens and chicken coops, ran hiking trails through the 100-acre woods, opened the bike shop (now Camp Shop), and opened Grouseland’s Vacation Cottage.

In 2016 Murray and Jane’s nephew Mason was brought in from the Chicago area to help run the business while attending college locally at Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University.

Once Mason arrived business at the Cottage began booming and has continued to grow.
Mason then started Grouseland Camping in addition to the Cottage and in 2020 Mason graduated from FSU and took over management of what is now Grouseland Hospitality! Since opening we have become friends with hundreds of wonderful people that have stayed at Grouseland. On that end alone it has been and will continue to be well worth our while.

When you stay, you get the cottage to yourself, you also have the use of the hot tub, pond and kayaks. We have miles of trails through our 100 acre woods and you are welcome to hike through them.
To top it all off our electricity is powered by solar panels, and the double filtered well water is solar heated. Because of our location with a pond and forest. Staying with us you are as close to off grid as you can get without giving up the internet!
