About this property

Coastal Cottage on Bike Path to South Beach, Edgartown, Katama Farm & Airfield

NEW JUNE RATES!
With beautiful vistas of Katama’s Waller Farm, steps to the bike path, and less than a mile walk/bike ride to South Beach, Herring Moon Cottage is a perfect setting for a magical beach vacation!

A charming, open, sun-lit cottage with two bedrooms, a full bath, great room, sun room and private deck with outdoor shower awaits your Island holiday. Turn left for South Beach (>1 mile) and right for town (1 ½ miles), both easily accessible on bicycle or by foot.

It’s less than a tenth of mile (5 minute walk) for a ride on a bi-plane at Katama Airfield or a meal at the restaurant there, and a short walk to Katama General Store with its welcoming porch and take out food. It is also a quick bike ride (4 minutes) to the Farm Institute for camp or food shopping, and it’s an easy walk or bike ride into Edgartown for restaurants, and shopping. The VTA, or Vineyard Transit Authority electric buses pass right by the house and can be waved down for a pick up and drop off. With our wonderful bus system, you can travel anywhere on the Island cheaply and safely. The addition of the electric buses has made them very quiet.

The cottage is cozy without feeling the least bit small. The bedrooms are newly decorated and have generous closets and new beds with all cotton bedding. The soaring ceiling and bright sun room are expansive while also providing a private retreat. There are games and books on hand to help you relax and unwind.

After the beach, enjoy the view from your private deck after your outdoor shower. It's not summer on the Island without an outdoor shower! There is a grill provided for your convenience.

Your hosts are an Island author and an charter fisherman, who are dedicated to making your vacation a success, without being obtrusive. Your cottage has it's own driveway, private entrance, front deck and private back deck and outdoor shower. They are more than happy to help you plan your vacation or just leave you alone!

Every guest will take home a signed copy of The Legend of Katama, the Wampanoag Creation Story of Dolphins to commemorate your Katama visit, and you might end up with some home-baked bread or bagels during your stay!

cute cottage in perfect location
We had an amazing week in MV staying here in the perfect location- a close bike ride to South Beach and downtown Edgartown. Stacy and Bob were kind, welcoming, and accommodating by allowing us to check-in a bit earlier and even providing some baby toys for our infant. They even offered homemade bagels, which sounded delicious but we unfortunately were not around to try. The apartment did have some ants inside, which is hard to control in the summer months, and some pet hair on the pillows and headboard in the main room, but these were not really in their control. We would absolutely love to stay here again!

Great Spot Near Best Beach
We had a great visit to Martha's Vineyard and a fantastic stay at this well appointed cottage. The location is excellent - close to the best beach on the island and with access to bike and walking paths. Loved the outdoor shower and the cottage was comfortable and outfitted with everything we needed. Hosts were available if needed but otherwise gave us the privacy we were looking for! Lovely property overall. Would stay again!

Stacy and Bob welcome you to your first vacation at Herring Creek Cottage! It was our dream to buy a home with a Guest House in Katama, close to our favorite beaching and fishing haunts, and in 2018 it finally happened. We are excited to make you very comfortable during your stay in our lovely new cottage!
We are Islanders: Stacy is a 4th generation Edgartownian, and Bob has been living here for 25 years. Stacy is a former teacher and a children's book author, having written two Island children's books. She is a board member and weigh station staffer for the Martha's Vineyard Blue and Bass Derby, an Island institution, held each year from mid-September until mid-October, and she can't wait for the next Derby! Bob is an award winning fisher and shore fishing guide (after many years as charter fisherman out of Edgartown Harbor), and an accomplished cook and musician. He is available for guided fishing excursions and will prepare your fishing or shell-fishing catch for you! We have lots of experience in creating memorable vacations and are happy to share our knowledge with you.

Why they chose this property

Stacy says:
Katama is, for us, the most beautiful part of Martha's Vineyard. With its flat plains leading to South Beach and its easy proximity to downtown Edgartown, it is the perfect location to live and vacation. As a child, my mother used to tell us all of the old Island stories, but her favorite was always the legend of Katama, the story of a young woman and her courageous independence. When I was 12, I decided that if I ever had a daughter, I would name her Katama, which I did. I loved this story so much that I went on to write and publish the children's book, THE LEGEND OF KATAMA which tells the Wampanoag Creation Story of Dolphins. A lifelong Edgartown girl, I have always wanted to live "down Katama," and I am excited to share our new cottage with you!

Bobby says:
I love being able to take my truck right out to Norton Point where I fish the early mornings. Easy access from our house to fish.

What makes this property unique

What we love about our cottage is its easy living feeling: roomy and comfortable with soaring open space as well as private places to curl up and dream. The deck overlooks the old Waller Farm, which is now Edgartown Conservation area, and it is in part a working farm. It is pastoral and very relaxing, with walking trails just through the field. The deck and outdoor shower make it the perfect place to stay near the beach, and the nearby bike path makes it easy to explore both town and beach.
