THINGS TO KNOW
1) Big Canoe is a gated community and guest access will be set up after a confirmed booking. A government-issued driver's license is required to pass through the gate. The gatehouse will provide a pass for your entry and exit at either of the two gates. This pass has a barcode on it that you will scan to operate the gate arm. NOTE: If arriving to check in after 7pm you must use the MAIN gatehouse (no one will be at the north gate to process your arrival.) Once you have a pass you can use either gate at anytime. No motorcycles are allowed in Big Canoe because of the steepness of the roads.
2) Big Canoe does not offer a way for the owners to pay for amenities for the guests. That means guests have to pay separately for golfing, boating, sauna tennis, etc... All trails and parks are free to access, everything else is pay-per-use at a daily rate and not included in the rental rate. Reservations in advance are recommended for dinning at the clubhouse, golf tee times or to reserve a pontoon boat at the Marina.
3) Expect to travel steep and curvy roads while in Big Canoe. Please plan to arrive during daylight hours to make it easier for you. Approaching the cabin is steep, but the parking area is mostly flat and can hold three-four cars. The roads can be dark at night and difficult to navigate for guests who are unfamiliar with the community.
4) TRASH - Big Canoe doesn't have garbage service (I know that sounds crazy), but you won't see any huge trash trucks on those small mountain roads. So that means you need to take all trash to the North Gate convenience center dumpster. (You are not being singled out here everyone in Big Canoe - owners, renters and short term guests - all bring their garbage to the convenience center). Please note that trash bags can not be left outside. There are bears in the area, and it is important to be mindful of keeping anything food related out of reach and stored properly.
