About this property
Fabulous 6-bedroom eco-guesthouse in Tzununa perfect for group getaways
Bambu Guest House is a sustainably built retreat in Tzununa, a traditional Mayan village on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. The house offers six bedrooms, private bathrooms, balconies with lake views, hot solar showers, Wi-Fi, a guest kitchen, sauna, plunge pool, fire circle, garden, and optional catering. With a spacious deck, sauna, nearby waterfalls, and easy boat access to San Marcos, it’s ideal for family groups, yoga retreats, volunteer groups, and nature lovers.
We offer an eco-friendly home built with natural materials, thoughtfully designed for exclusive whole-house stays. It’s a wonderful space for groups, retreats, and families traveling together.
The house includes six bedrooms: two cozy private rooms for 1–2 guests, two spacious dorm-style rooms (one with 6 beds and one with 8), and two larger private rooms that sleep 1–4 guests. Altogether, the house comfortably accommodates up to 24 guests, offering plenty of room to gather, relax, and enjoy time together.
The Bambu is built into the hillside and accessed via several stairs and walking paths. While this is part of the home’s natural charm and scenic setting, it may not be the best fit for guests with mobility limitations.

About the host
Hosted by Michelle Fajkus
I’m Shad, a regenerative farmer, educator, and social entrepreneur who has been living and working in Guatemala for the past 15 years. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University and leaving the corporate world, I felt called to build a more grounded, purpose-driven life near Lake Atitlán.
Over the years, I founded Atitlán Organics and later Wellkind Guatemala, a nonprofit focused on reforestation, food security, and community empowerment. Living and working closely with local communities showed me how powerful grassroots initiatives can be, especially when they’re supported and shared with care.
Hosting at Bambu Guest House is an extension of that vision. I love welcoming guests who are curious, conscious, and excited to connect with nature, culture, and one another. Whether you’re here for rest, retreat, or inspiration, my hope is that your stay feels meaningful, comfortable, and deeply connected to this special place.

Why they chose this property
I chose Tzununá for its rare balance of natural beauty, authenticity, and community. Nestled between the lake and the hills, the village moves at a slower, more intentional pace that invites presence and connection. I love waking up to birds, lake views, and fresh air, and ending the day with sunsets over the water. The neighborhood is home to farmers, artisans, and long-time residents who care deeply for the land and one another. With nearby waterfalls, forest trails, and easy boat access to neighboring villages, Tzununá feels peaceful, alive, and deeply rooted.
What makes this property unique
What makes Bambu Guest House truly unique is the intention behind how it was built and how it has been used over the years. The home was designed as an eco-conscious retreat space, built with natural and locally sourced materials, and thoughtfully integrated into the hillside to honor the land and its surroundings. Sustainability is a value that shapes everything from solar-heated showers and water systems to the way the space invites simplicity, presence, and connection.
For over 10 years, Bambu has hosted retreats, trainings, and gatherings focused on personal growth, community building, and regeneration. That history has created a grounded, welcoming energy that guests often feel as soon as they arrive. The layout encourages both togetherness and quiet reflection, with open decks for group meals or yoga, as well as peaceful corners to rest and reset.
Whether guests come for a retreat, a family gathering, or time in nature, Bambu offers a space that feels intentional, nourishing, and alive with good energy.
