Located within a few hours of New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Baltimore, our quaint little neighborhood of Mt. Penn sits outside of the City of Reading, in Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Close to downtown Reading’s shops, museums, arboretums, and eateries, and similarly adjacent to Penn mountain, with its beautiful hiking and scenery, our little cottage in Mt. Penn truly has the best of both worlds!
One of many, the Schuykill River Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this `rail-trail` is now a great place to walk your pup or get the stroller out. Other hiking options include Seven Step Dam, part of Antietam Lake Park- an amazing location to check out a piece of history, and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, a pet-friendly destination showcasing early American industry.
Stokesay Castle & The Knight`s Pub is a must see 13th century inspired English Castle. The Knight`s Pub boasts beautiful views, delicious food and refreshing cocktails, The Pub is an atmosphere like no other.
Another spot to check out- The Reading Pagoda. The Pagoda is a gorgeous, historic structure, featuring iconic Japanese architecture that was built in 1908 with a famously panoramic view.
Approximately 10 minutes away at the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Center for Animal Welfare, it’s just a short drive from the Cooper Cottage to a local dog park. The center is a multi-acre equine rescue facility that offers a trail near the horse pastures for your furry friend to explore on leash and also offers the gated dog park complete with two different sections, depending on your dog’s needs.
Within easy walking distance, a street away, you have Antietam Fields, complete with wide grassy spaces and a walking track around the park.
Also within walking distance, you have the Antietam pool and Crystal Lake, located in Carsonia Park featuring trails around the lake, picnic tables, playgrounds, basketball courts and ball fields. On certain days at Carsonia Park you can join the locals for a day at the Antietam market- spend an evening shopping, supporting our young entrepreneurs, sampling, enjoying dinner and dessert, mingling with fellow members of the community, and listening to music!
Across the street from Carsonia Park you have Anthony`s Trattoria- one of many delicious food stops you will have to make!
We also highly recommend Frank and Diannah’s Arbor Inn for fine dining, Liberty Tap Room for its extensive selection of craft beers, and Trooper Thorn`s Irish Beef House, a casual Irish pub experience.
You`ll walk through the front door into our living room and see our huge comfy sectional, and a 55” smart tv, with Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ already signed in and ready for you to use. In the dining room, there is plenty of seating for the whole family, and depending on your mood- coffee or drink bar. The large sliding glass doors in the dining area open right out onto our deck and pool area (Pool is currently covered and closed for maintenance). Right down from the fully outfitted kitchen is our half bath and our doggie lounge area, featuring dog couches, crates and beds of all sizes. Past that is the GE front loading washer and dryer and the back door to enter into our large fully fenced in backyard! Depending on the weather, it can be hard to keep to keep our dogs clean and mud-free, so half of the lawn is a dedicated pup potty spot outfitted with artificial turf and gated off from the grill and lounge area. On our second floor (6 steps up) you will find all 3 bedrooms- All three are outfitted with gorgeous queen size beds, two with luxury plush mattresses and one with a firm, to offer you a choice. All three rooms feature beautiful, locally crafted furniture. Located within a few hours of New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Baltimore, our quaint little town of Ephrata sits outside of the City of Lancaster, in the heart of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster County is of course known for the Amish community and their unique and rustic culture, surrounded by picturesque rolling hills and fields, and quaint country stores. Known for its excellent fine dining, historic architecture, and fine arts, Lancaster City boasts numerous theaters, galleries, bars, and cafes. In the center of the city of Lancaster resides America’s oldest continuously operating farmers market. Central Market bounds with locally sourced fruits and vegetables, baked goods, freshly cut flowers, and so much more! Even closer to our little town of Ephrata is the picturesque town of Lititz with its world renowned Wilbur Chocolate Factory and incredible dining, unique festivals and tree lined storefronts. Of course we also have the scoop on Ephrata’s best small town attractions- within 5- 10 minutes you will find cafe’s, pizza shops, authentic Mexican and Dominican eateries, craft breweries, wine tasting, and farm fresh fruit and vegetables from our local amish farm stands. And can’t forget- Green Dragon farmer’s market on Fridays.
