About this property

NEW Fall $ale Hamakua Coast Home for Waterfall Days and Family Dinners

Summary:

Plan your east-side days around the changeable sky: a misty drive along the Hamakua Coast in the morning, a stop in Hilo for poke or market fruit, then dinner back at your own table. This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Papaikou home sleeps eight, with seven beds, air conditioning, a kitchen, and laundry for the real work of a family trip. It is a practical base for the part of the Big Island that feels green, rainy, and alive. Spend time at Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden, take the coastal road through Onomea, or make a day of Hilo's shops and waterfront. The home gives a larger group room to regroup after wet shoes, snacks, and a full day outside. It suits families who want to trade resort bustle for the Hamakua Coast's slower, rain-forest side.

The Space:

With three bedrooms, two and a half baths, seven beds, and room for eight guests, this home gives a family group a more workable base than separate hotel rooms. Air conditioning helps after humid east-side outings, and the kitchen, dining table, washer, and dryer make breakfasts, packed lunches, and beach-towel resets easy. The layout is set up for coming home together after a day on the road.

Guest Access:

Guests at this Big Island home near Hilo enjoy a private entrance and easy access to the Hamakua Coast area, with air conditioning for comfort. A nearby laundromat supports longer stays, and shopping is close by. Long term stays are welcomed for guests planning extended visits.

The Neighborhood:

Papaikou is a green, residential stretch just north of Hilo on the Hamakua Coast. It is not a walk-to-dinner setting, which is part of the appeal for travelers who want the Big Island's lush east side around them. Hilo provides groceries, restaurants, the farmers market, and practical services. The Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden and the coastal scenery around Onomea are rewarding nearby outings, while Akaka Falls and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park make memorable day trips by car.

Nearby attractions:

• Onomea Bay (2 min drive)

• Hawaiʻi Plantation Museum (3 min drive)

• Hāmākua Chocolate Farm (3 min drive)

• Hawaiʻi Tropical Botanical Garden (4 min drive)

• Krishna Cow Sanctuary (5 min drive)

• Hilo Ocean Adventures (10 min drive)

• Hilo Farmers Market (11 min drive)

• Rainbow Falls (14 min drive)

• Akaka Falls State Park (21 min drive)

Getting Around:

Hilo International Airport is about 15 to 20 minutes away, a short and easy drive. A rental car is recommended for reaching Hilo's beaches, shops, and restaurants just a few miles down the coast. Papaikou itself is a small, quiet community with limited walkable amenities, so a quick drive covers most errands. Parking is generally simple, available on site or along the street.

The home is along the scenic route, tucked away in a quiet area, not far from Downtown Hilo. The home itself is large enough for 6-8 people. I was with a couple of elderly and the home being 1 floor was extremely helpful for our stay. Unfortunately, the rain did not stop during our vacation but it kept the temperature just perfect. We did have to deal with termites hatching but the owner did outline instructions once this happens. The kitchen was complete and convenient on nights we didn't want to go out to dinner. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay. If I make it back to Hilo, I would definitely stay here again.

Great home for sleeping many in the Hilo area

I was initially thrown off by needing to install and register the Vacasa app due to this home being maintained by that company, but besides that it was a fantastic stay in a spacious and comfortable home. If you're looking to sleep 4-8 people in the same place in between sightseeing around Hilo while still having a reasonable amount of space, this home is perfect.

Great, air-conditioned home with washer & dryer.

-A/C unit in the living room that kept the whole home a nice temp (we were there in June). -Washer & dryer with detergent provided. -We had an issue with the shower knob and they sent someone out within the hour to fix it. Great in person response time!! -Roosters and cats lounging in the neighbors' yards was a plus. -Plenty of parking. -Would stay here again.

The front door was a major problem and the property manager knows about the ongoing problem and has not properly fixed it. The door frame sticks and the combination lock it not working properly. You call for help and they just tell you what you already know and the door lock still doesn’t work correctly. The code is ten digits which you can not enter in the time frame allowed. The property manager firm is all about fallowing rules not about helping the traveler. I would not recommend this property to anybody with current management.

We are very sorry to hear you had problems with the front door and access code during your stay. We understand that this impacted your overall experience and regret the disappointment this caused. Our records show that our customer service team was able to assist you with the access issues during your stay and contacted our maintenance staff to look further into the door issues. After your departure, our staff checked the lock, and it is working fine. The 10-digit code needs to be entered in a timely manner, or it will not work. We value your insights and will continue monitoring the guest access to ensure assistance is provided when needed. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with an improved stay in the future.

Cute Home in Papaikou

The home is located in Papaikou just outside of Hilo but still close to the local Walmart and Target. Walmart and Target is approximately 10 minutes from the house. The house has an outdoor shower and laundry room with a lock code that is provided once you book. The main house door requires a code as well. We love that the doors have extra security since we had kids on this trip. The house was well kept and with extra supplies and even an extra sleeping cot for additional guests. There’s even a cabinet with first aid supplies. They thought of everything! The only downside would be that the main house shower valve took a while to shut off and the water only runs really hot not cold. We hadn’t told the homeowner or contacted anyone from Vacasa, so this could have been resolved during the stay. That was the only thing. Other than that, great home. Quiet and peaceful neighborhood. Two thumbs up!

Thank you, Arielle, for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the home and appreciated the extra touches like the cot and first aid supplies. We understand the inconvenience with the shower valve and want to assure you that both the hot and cold valves have been replaced to ensure a more comfortable experience for future guests. We’re glad you found the neighborhood quiet and peaceful, and we appreciate your feedback. We hope to see you again soon!
