A light footprint
In creating our Portland Garden Studio, one of our goals was to recycle and re-purpose as much as possible. We had fun doing it and thought we’d share this list with our guests:
*The masonry for the patio came from a Portland school when they updated.
*The rocks that surround the patio were buried in the gardens here from the ‘50s.
*The decking was removed from Rob’s brother’s house and reinstalled.
*The deck framing and masonry supports came from a Craig’s List ad - the owners were re-designing their back yard.
*The ceiling in the apartment is original. We removed the sheetrock, painted the beams, and left the fir attic decking alone. If you look carefully at the ceiling you’ll see the blue grading marks on the lumber from 1945 or so: 3,3,3,2,3 etc.
*The wood frames inside the wall niches came from old cedar barn wood.
*In early 2015, we installed a photovoltaic solar panel system on the roof. You can’t see it from the driveway or the guest side of the house, but it produces enough electricity to power almost all the needs of the house, including the hot tub.
We try to not use any herbicides, and recycle just about everything that the recycling people will take.
Come on over. We'll leave the light on for you.
GLBT Friendly
NOTE: The driveway is monitored for security purposes.

About the host
Hosted by Debi

Your hosts, Debi and Rob embrace the sharing economy with the Owl Forest Studio and their ocean view beach home (the Gullhouse) being shared in the Short Term Rental Market. We love meeting travelers, hearing their stories and sharing our homes. Our podcast Hosting Your Home shares the inspiring stories of other hosts. Founders of the first nonprofit trade association for hosts, Host2Host.org we are also very active in the broader host community. Married for over 50 years, 3 children and 5 grandchildren give us a lot of opportunity to love life.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the park-like yard in 1976. The big Doug firs in the front offer a unique forested setting in a busy neighborhood. It's a great place to relax, and back in the day, it was a great place for our children to play. You might see the zip-line which is still used by our visiting grandchildren and the remnants of the tree fort Rob build for our kids!
What makes this property unique
Although the apartment is attached to our home, the area is completely surrounded by a 6ft fence (Rob's handiwork) that offers a quality of privacy that makes it feel like there are two separate homes here. We have two (almost) completely separate living spaces. We love being able to meet and greet our guests, but rarely see you after you arrive, unless you seek us out. We are available, but not intrusive. With the advent of Covid, we can offer you a completely contact-free arrival and departure.
The location is great, just 2 blocks off the freeway and in a neighborhood area that is spread out, with no houses looming over us. The #78 bus stops here, which is handy and downtown Portland is only about a 15 minute drive.
