Castelsardo is a fortified, medieval borought which has kept its ancient charm for over 900 years. When it was founded by the powerful Doria family in 1102, it was named “Castelgenovese”. In 1448, having been taken over by the Aragonese, it was renamed, “Castellaragonese”. It was the Savoia family who gave the town its present name in the 1700s.The castle, city walls and the Aragonese tower of the beautiful Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate soar out of the trachyte cliffs and their sheer drop to the sea a sight which gives this place a magical beauty which has always charmed anyone who visits, making them want to return again soon.Castelsardo is the ideal place for the sea lovers. In fact the particular characteristics of the coast line offer the choice between fine sandy beaches such as “La Marina”, and the shores of “Lu bagnu”, “La Vignaccia” and “Baia Ostina”and rocky coves such as “Pedraladda”, “Manganella” and “Punta La Craba”: everywhere, the clear, coloured waters make you want to dive in. The splendid sea and its seafloor which is one of the most impressive in the Mediterranean would tempt anyone to go scuba diving. It is also an ideal place for sailing and windsurfing. But the town offers facilities for basketball, volleyball, tennis, football, five a side and other sports. There are also play ground.
The area round Castelsardo is ideal for memorable excursions on foot,by bike or on a horse. The countryside is rich in woods, perfumed Mediterranean shrubs, sheer cliffs, parks and enchanting views with impressive sunsets.
