The host was excellent, he met us on the property and went through all the information. The house was super stocked w all the amenities. Large property gave our family room to play games, use the big jacuzzi. Close to town for shopping. We just overall had an awesome stay.

Beautiful Place. Can't wait to return.
Our group had a great time in your ranch. The house is pretty, cozy and it is a perfect size for us. The ranch is amazing with a lot of nature and peace around there. Ken, the owner, is very friendly and flexible. We can’t wait to staying there again.

So pleased to meet you and your family and delighted that everyone enjoyed our mountain paradise. The open forest and numerous outdoor activities are not there by accident but because we raised our children at the ranch and designed it for family enjoyment. Since we have the last legal horse property in our neighborhood, please come back to see us when the corrals are full.

Great Place
We went with our group of 15 friends and the place was awesome. We probably could have comfortably slept about 5 more people. We went during the winter and it is VERY close to both Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The owners are also very nice and responded to every question I had. Overall--such a great time at this house.

We are delighted that you and your friends had such an awesome stay at our family home ... that makes renting our property a joy to get feedback like yours! We, too, love the serenity and privacy of our little ranch nestled among the pine trees. Thanks for leaving our place in great shape and we'll look forward to seeing you again. Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Beautiful, spacious property perfect for a retreat or getaway
Susan and Ken's family ranch is a beautiful gem of a property to have a nice small gathering with family or friends. It has a warm, welcoming feel and really gives you a feeling of natural wilderness while still being right near the town center of Big Bear Lake. Susan and Ken were easy to communicate with and the amenities provided were top notch. My group had an amazing time staying there while on getaway from city living and would highly recommend this rental.

We are especially pleased that you liked natural wilderness feeling. That is precisely why we purchased the adjacent acreage. We wanted it to feel the way it did why we were young and first moved to the mountains. We've worked hard to preserve the innocence of a cabin in the woods and our sense of privacy. Looking forward to your return visit.
Susan and Ken’s property provided everything we could have asked for. The kids enjoyed sledding and spending time outside. The adults loved the fact that we could watch them from the dining room :) our time spent here was definitely a good time! Thank you.
We had an amazing stay at this wonderful cozy cabin in the woods. The owners made our stay extra special by providing a Christmas tree and they even left a bag of ornaments for our children to place on the tree which was such a nice touch at Christmas time. They were so sweet to also leave us a delicious cake and ice cream for our family to enjoy. The house was cozy and made for a perfect stay in Big Bear. We even woke up to a winter wonderland after it snowed one evening during our stay. The kids and adults had fun playing in the snow and even built a small snowman in the backyard! The owner met us and gave us very helpful instructions about the house including all the amenities which are many and toys for kids and adults that are included. The owners were very helpful and take extra special care of their family home where they raised their children. The owner was very knowledgeable about the wildlife in the area and we were able to observe several wildlife (squirrels, chipmunks, coyotes) in the backyard. We laid out pieces of peanut butter sandwiches along the back deck and watched in amazement as the squirrels and chipmunks came to eat them. The kids and adults alike were fascinated by watching the wildlife! All in all we had a wonderful, fun and restful stay in this cozy cabin in the woods. This is a wonderful home to stay at for families with children of all ages. Thank you to The Huskeys for sharing their home with our family!
We have stayed at many great properties in Big Bear and this one is simply the best. The owners are so kind, helpful and attentive and the cabin is well appointed, spacious and comfortable. The property is a dream for kids and teens with lots of open space, a bunk house, an outdoor hot tub, and lots of forest and a creek to explore. Thank you Susan and Ken for all your help and advice and kindness to share your lovely home with us. We will definitely be back. Reem Harwell and family.

We were delighted to host you and your family and those very nice and polite teenage boys. As you pointed out, our property is perfect for family activities with all the wide open acreage and the privacy we all enjoy.
We look forward to your return visit.
Warmest regards, Susan and Ken
Great house for large group and the property is amazing!
Our family of 13 stayed here and there was plenty of room for everyone. Kitchen is great and has everything you need for cooking. The pool table was put to good use when we weren’t outside enjoying the amazing property playing in the snow. Many areas right on the property for sledding so that made it great not having to drive anywhere to find a sledding hill and place to park. Hiked up the hill and the view of the ski slopes is beautiful. Owners are great with communication! Definitely will be back!

Thoroughly enjoyed meeting and hosting your amazing three-generation family, from your tiny baby to your loving dog, Ronnie, all first class.
So glad you loved the acres of pine forest. This is why we bought the property for our own family over 30 years ago.
Look forward to having you back.
I want to take a minute to thank both Susan and Ken Huskey. My family of 16 stayed on their beautiful cabin over the Christmas weekend. The place is kept clean and organized. Whenever I needed something or had a question, I just had to text Ken and he was there to assist. Our experience was really nice and will be booking again! This place is is about family and defiantly highly recommended. Thanks again Susan and Ken!

Hector,
Thank you for the 5-star review. As you said, the ranch is all about families. With four acres of forest for the kids to explore, to the tree swing, tree fort, horseshoes, ping pong, etc., there's lots of entertainment without having to leave the property. In addition, our setting offers complete privacy. Glad to hear you'll be returning.
Happy New Year to you and your family,
Ken and Susan
From the very beginning the owners were in great communication. Because of this we were able to match my family's needs and expectations with what they were able to provide. Our arrival was met with a light hearted tour of the property and checking in was as simple as it could get.
The property itself is gorgeous with more things to offer than the kids could take advantage of. It offers a balance of seclusion and proximity to all the things Big Bear has to offer. Blocks away from groceries and restaurants, minutes away from both ski resorts. Yet when you're on the property it feels like you have the whole mountain to yourselves.
We would definitely look forward to booking again in the future.
The unnecessary comments that were made about my Latino father. My father happened to arrived in the middle of our tour of the cabin. He then introduced himself and that is when the owner went on to say that he’d be “checking his pockets for silver wear before he left” because he looked “sketchy.” Aside from that, property was as described.

I had no idea your father was Latino, any more than you didn't know my grandmother was Latino. Race not relevant. We were just kidding around as nice people do. Nothing to do with race identification. My apologies if you were offended. That was not my intent. Best regards to your dad; nice guy.

Dr. Bednar,
So glad you and your family enjoyed Starvation Flats Ranch. That was quite a lovely snowman the grandchildren built. We are so fortunate to have acquired the surrounding acreage which provides lots of privacy and room for sledding and such.
Come back and stay sometime in the summer when we also have multiple outdoor activities such as lake fishing, water sports, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, corn hole, etc.
We'll look forward to hosting you and your family again soon.
The communication with Susan and Ken was great. Ken met us at their beautiful property and gave us a tour and instructions. We are a family of 8 adults and 7 grandchildren, (grandparents, adult children and spouses, teenage, elementary age and 2 year old grand children), and everyone loved the property. We had snow and the kids (and adults) loved playing and walking around the property. Our own big playground. They played hide and seek, played on the playhouse deck, tried snow boarding, sledding. 15 year old loved the jacuzzi. There were 15 of us and we initially were going to put 4 in the bunk house but were having fun being together and were able to arrange for all of us to sleep in the big house. We took our own games but there are plenty of games and the pool table was a huge hit with everyone. Although there are flat screen TVs everywhere we never once in 4 days turned any of them on. We have stayed at quite a few different homes in Big Bear and this property is by far the best as far as outside activities and large property. The inside has everything that you could possibly need, one big living area that fit us all very nicely. We only left one time to find some bigger snow hills for the teenagers to use their snowboards, did not even go to the snow skiing area. We hope to return to Starvation Flats. Thank you Susan and Ken.

WONDERFUL FAMILY GETAWAY!!
Starvation Flats Ranch was a HOMERUN!! (my adult age 20's children told me) My daughters said the pictures do not give it justice, it is even more beautiful. We have rented many Big Bear homes over the past 20+ years, the lot is HUGE! The owner met us for our arrival, and showed us the property. (by the way first time this has ever happen, a plus) This trip included husband & myself, my 4 adult children (22-32) and , my 3 grandchildren, son in law, sisters family (5 & 21), and a 16 year old nephew. We were fortunate to have snow and the backyard became snow play area for everyone from age 9 mo. - 52. The boys went on hike on the adjacent hill next to the property. The kitchen area was very spacious and we were able to cook for 16 people. At night , the living room area became game night (something that does not occur at home), board games, pool table and card games. The bedrooms are very spacious, more then enough room for our family. Everything you need is available (towels, blankets, washer & dryer etc.). I plan these trips for 2 reasons...family time and for my children & now grandchildren and to build memories HOMERUN! We will definitely be back next year.

Your review brought happy tears to our eyes since it is obvious that you enjoyed the property precisely as we have for some 30 years. Couldn't help but notice your multiple use of 'family' in your review. We designed this property for our family and others like yours to enjoy. Years ago we purchased the surrounding forest so our children and grandchildren would have a safe place to play and explore. It's really special having so much open forest with majestic pine trees and wildlife to experience. We love families with all their smiling faces and children erupting with laughter and joy. Incidentally, every year we try to make a significant improvement. Last year we installed two new barbeques/smoker and this week we are installing a new family friendly hot tub/spa. Lots of snow this season. Come to Starvation Flats Ranch and see for yourself why families return year after year. Ken and Susan, owners
We wanted a chance for a white Christmas getaway with our kids and six grandkids (1 to 13), so we reserved this VRBO early in the year. Alas, we caught a dry couple of weeks and had no snow. This place was great for our group. The kids played outside with the toys they got and the many diversions on the property - ping pong, hot tub, giant tree swing, and more. It's a vast, secluded property ... no helicopter parenting is required. There is also plenty of space indoors, with several smart TVs (and excellent WiFi). The 4' wide fireplace is massive and keeps it cozy. The layout is fantastic for large groups, with a kitchen open to the family room opening into the billiards table. Apparently, there are a lot of municipal regulations on VRBO, and the host must meet us at check-in to review them. A screaming baby and raucous 3, 6, and 8-year-olds notwithstanding, we're a pretty quiet bunch, so the 10 PM curfew wasn't a problem. The kitchen table expands to seat 10, and it still feels spacious. There's a window nook where the littles sat for meals. When we needed something, the hosts responded quickly via text with detailed answers. (Refilling the hot tub, clarifying the checkout procedures, etc.) They went above and beyond to make our family mountain Christmas memorable. Friendly people with their grandkids, whom they regularly entertain on the property.

Owners were very rude to me
The first night we were at the house was great, the second night was a different story all together. I received a call from the owner about the amount of cars I had on the property. We had anticipated 4 cars but some people in my group could not car pool so we had 6 cars. The owner then told me that I was in violation of the contract and threatened to evict me for going over the number of cars (the website says they have plenty of room for 8 cars and they have a sign posted on the property that says max 8 cars). After talking about the number of cars, the owner then repeatedly asked me about the number of people. I repeatedly told him that I had only 12 people, yet he felt in necessary to continue interrogating me about it. One of my guest was at the grille when enjoying an e-cig when the property manager decided to stop by (unannounced to spy on us), so the owner questioned me about this as well. He ended that part of the conversation with a vulgar comment that I really did not enjoy.
Just so everyone is aware, I contacted the owners later to express all of these comments and give them a chance to make it right prior to writing this review. During that email conversation, they decided to call me a liar about the vulgar language and made the matter worse for me.
I hope nobody else ever has to receive the same treatment I did from these people, it was very upsetting.

A small portion of your security deposit was withheld due to the poor condition the house was left in ... as itemized in our email to you ... and photographed for verification. Your contract specified the house was to be left in a clean and tidy condition as it was upon your arrival, and it was not. As such, additional cleaning fees were incurred and charged against your deposit.
As for the number of vehicles, you specified in your contract that 4 vehicles would be on the premises. Our property manager did a drive by and counted 2 additional vehicles ... which is clearly a red flag that we may be in violation of the city-imposed restrictions on the number of overnight guests ... which could lead to fines, guest eviction ... and even the loss of our license. However, because we took your word regarding the number of guests claimed, no further action was taken. The property manager also observed what appeared to be people smoking on the property which is not only a violation of our rental agreement and city required code of conduct, but also poses a serious threat to our property and that of our neighbors in this heavily forested mountain community. As such, you were called to verify that we were in compliance and there was no undue fire hazard present.
We treat all of our guests with courtesy and respect ... which partially accounts for why some 90% of our guests are return visitors and in which we take a great deal of pride.
Finally, you accused us of unfairly charging you extra tax beyond that required by the city. The city requires an 8% TOT tax and a 3% TBID tax for a total of 11% which is precisely what you were charged.
Sorry you were disappointed; we were, too.
The property was amazing! We had a group of 8 adults and 5 kids, and there was plenty of room inside, and a beautiful property to explore outside. The home was stocked with everything we needed, and we enjoyed the games, puzzles, and pool table. We loved seeing the coyotes, coydogs, squirrels, and chipmunks running freely through the property. The hosts were easily accessible and made our stay a great one!
We had a wonderful multi-family stay at Ken and Susan's beautiful home and property. These hosts were so gracious, helpful, and everything we needed for a great stay. Highly recommend this rental and will surely be back!

You have a lovely family and families are precisely what we designed our ranch property for. From acreage to run and play, to tree swings, and innumerable games, there's lots to do for young and old and your family made the most of the amenities. Santa's elves even brought fresh snow for the holidays! We look forward to your return.
I get that the owners need to protect their property from bad renters, but that shouldn't mean this behavior is acceptable. When answering emails the owner will be condescending and passive aggressive. If you try to clarify anything that is unclear about the listing, he will be rude. At check-in the owner threatened to sue us if we didn't follow the rules, so be ready for that. We did have the max amount of vehicles per the lease but were for charged excessive wear and tear to A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY! We cooked on the BBQ provided, which was filthy and smoked more than the smoker, and were charged a cleaning fee for that as well. We came inside at 10PM, we kept quiet with no loud music or outside shenanigans after 10PM, we cleaned the place well before leaving and for all of that it will cost us an extra $600. So, definitely stay here if you want to be watched by the 10+ cameras on property, watched by the neighbors, and watched by the property manager for anything they might be able to nickel and dime you over. You will feel uneasy the whole time you are here. You will be treated as if you are a bad renters prior to even setting foot on property.

Renter willfully and knowingly violated the terms and conditions of the rental agreement and violated city and state laws.
Violations include but not limited to excessive number of guests and vehicles, both confirmed by property manager, neighbors, and verified by review of detailed and extensive security camera video footage. Specific contract details were discussed and confirmed through numerous exchanges of emails, text messages, and in-person check in, and clearly specified in the rental agreement.
Behavior has consequences. The renter chose not to abide by the contract. 1/3 of renter's security deposit was forfeited due to contract violations.
P.S. The driveway is asphalt.
We had a fantastic time at this location! Lots to do in the house, outside the house and in the surrounding area! Very close to the ski slopes and grocery stores. Fully stocked linens and kitchen cabinet. Ample seating for 13+. Kids loved the outside swing (adults took a ride too)! Badminton was fun for the kids. Great host! Beautiful house! Temperature controlled. Clean. Spacious interior. Lots of window views. Loved that the downstairs room could sleep 5. The 5th room is a bunkhouse that can sleep 4 and has its own bathroom. WiFi and internet for the TV in the main room. Wish we could have stayed longer!

We are delighted that all the children enjoyed our acres of trees and abundant activities. Our home and property are made for families just like yours. Lots to see, lots to do. We're still finding Easter eggs tucked in the forest. :)))) We look forward to your return to the ranch. Your children will love our beautiful Friesian horses.
When we arrived Ken the owner was there to greet and show us around the ranch we found it to be a sprawling ranch with a bunkhouse and about as private as you can get this is a place you don’t even have to leave to go play in the snow there are games and everything you will need to make memories of a lifetime .
It’s snowed very heavily why we where there that made it even more beautiful .
on our last day Ken got there early with a snowblower and made a road for us to get out he’s an awesome guy there just aren’t any people like him anymore
So a big thank you to Ken and Susan huskey looking forward to coming back

"Not having to leave the property to enjoy the mountains and play" is a high compliment and exactly the way we structured the ranch. With over three feet of snow, It's a good thing you had your macho pickups.
So glad the boys had such a wonderful time riding the sled run all the way to the stream!
We loved staying at Fox Farm! We received a warm welcome from the owners, and it feels like home the moment you set foot inside. There was never a need for us to leave with so many activities available on the property. We made some good memories here and would definitely visit again!

About the host
Hosted by susan d huskey
We fell in love with this setting and location 34 years ago and have created a family retreat with a long list of activities available right on the property. Starvation Flats Ranch was named during the gold mining days of the mid 1800's, historic to the area. There are still mine sites you can visit locally.
Why they chose this property
You won't find this open forested acreage and setting elsewhere this close to all the fun activities you come to the mountains to enjoy.
What makes this property unique
Picture perfect mountain setting, hundreds of majestic pines, lots of privacy and open acreage that is yours alone to enjoy! About a mile to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts and walking distance to the lake. You will feel like this is your own private retreat, yet close to many popular restaurants. Favorite activities on the property include horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, corn hole, hiking through the adjacent eagle habitat, sledding, or just nestling in one of the hammocks or watching the snow fall from the living room window seat. Huge river rock fireplace adds ambiance to this lovely home. Two balconies off each upstairs bedroom as well as plenty of ground floor deck to accommodate your group. Dual barbeques (infrared and smoker) make outdoor meals a real treat. After a day on the lake or at the ski resorts, relax in the outdoor spa while stargazing.
