About this property

Attractive 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom Villa.with own pool. Near Caldas de Monchique.

This lovely 4 bedroom villa is situated in a very secluded, almost magical valley in the foothills of the Monchique Mountain Range, but it is not at all remote and has nice restaurants only a few metres from the driveway. Monchique town is only a short drive up the hill, while the fishing port of Portimao with its big shopping centres and all the amenities you could wish for, is only a few minutes drive down the hill as are the wonderful beaches at Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo and Alvor. Nearby, is the enchanting village of Caldas de Monchique, a popular beauty spot, famous for its volcanic spa water which you can find in restaurants all over Portugal. In Caldas there is a huge open air bread oven where on most mornings you can sample the delicious, hot fresh rolls, baked with chouriço sausage inside them, or take stroll along one of the sub-tropical trails.

The Villa has its own mature garden with palm trees and numerous Mediterranean plants whose flowers attract many butterflies and birds. Atractive Mimosa trees grow nearby and a rustic path leads to the small river Boina, which, if you find a safe crossing point has a nice woodland walk and riverside path, leading up to mountain and forest trails beyond.

Sitting on the villas sun-deck or patio, is a very idyllic way to while away a few hours in a very secluded spot. The whole of the mountain view directly in front of the house is within the Monchique eco zone and it is quite easy to imagine you are far away from anywhere or anyone, yet actually,, it is not at all remote. Within a couple of hundred metres there are two good restaurants and a bit further are two interesting pottery shops.

Many guests chose not to move far from the pool, watching the swifts swooping down over the water until they are skimming so close to the water it looks like they are about to land. On clear nights, look up at the stars twinkling so brightly in the dark sky it is almost like a firework display and if you have some binoculars you will see the true beauty of the heavens. If you enjoy a game of Petanque there is an area of the car park marked out and a set of Boules are in the house. On the grass area beyond the pool you will find a simple "Toss the Horseshoe" game and a plentiful supply of horseshoes.

The villa is very spacious with plenty of room to spread out. The main living room has ample comfortable seating and extends into the circular entrance hall with its double marble stairways. Rather than cram lots of people into every space or corner, the house is equipped for up to 8 people. There are 4 bedrooms, 2 with en-suite facilities and two that share a spacious bathroom. There is a fourth bathroom on the ground floor which has a hydrotherapy shower enclosure with numerous jets, sprays, LED lighting and a radio. Three of the bedrooms have balconies one of these being a very large one overlooking the pool. All bedrooms have TV's and the living room has a 55" smart TV with satellite and cable programmes as well as a Blu-Ray DVD player, WiFi covers most areas and the fast internet is from Starlink.

There is a separate dining room which is light and airy and French doors open onto a patio and sun deck with garden furniture as well as a door direct to the fully equipped kitchen which an electric fan oven and induction hob, a 24 litre Sapientia air fryer oven and a microwave. Crockery, cutlery, cups, saucers mugs and glasses as well as cutlery and utensils are provided for 9 people. There is a 420 litre Fridge/ freezer, a dishwasher, coffee makers and kettle.. The laundry room off the kitchen has a washing machine, ironing board and the maids equipment.

The figure 8 shaped swimming pool is approximately 10 x 5 metres overall with about half the area around 0.85 metres deep and the deep-end has approx. 1.85 metres There is a refreshing spa pool with a waterfall to the main pool. Beyond the deep-end of the main pool is semi-infinity wall with four small waterfalls between rocks. The pool deck has sun-loungers and chairs as well as a brick built barbeque with utensils.

Apart from the nearby beaches, a similar distance gets you to several golf courses, with the Morgado Golf courses only about 12km away. If motor sports interest you, there is the huge international autodromo where the Portuguese F1 Grand Prix is held and motor racing at all levels as well as motor bike racing and all sizes of go-karting takes place. Fast driving experiences are available there to suit most pockets, either on the main tracks in a Porsche or similar car or on the go-cart tracks. Alternatively, a short way from Quinta da Mimosa is a buggy rental facility that does self drive buggy tours over the various mountain trails.

On the way to Portimao it is worth stopping for one of the best free shows in Portugal, where, near the gas station lives a huge colony of Storks who are nearly always putting on delightful flying displays. Whether you enjoy beaches or the countryside, mountains, quaint villages or busy shopping centres, nightlife or just chilling out, watching the stars, Quinta da Mimosa is ideally situated. Buses stop by the villa gates for Monchique or to Portimao with easy onward connections to the beaches, but a car makes it far easier to explore this wonderful part of the Algarve and there is plenty of free private parking space in front of the villa.

Impeccable. Private. Reasonable rates. Peaceful.

This recent trip was the third time we have stayed at this Villa. We must like it! The villa and pool & pool area were super clean. The overall lay of the Villa is practical, easy to entertain in several areas - poolside, dining, living. Three of the bedrooms have balconies, which added the extra bit of privacy. The location of the Villa is private, no nosy neighbours, but just at the end of the drive way are two good restaurants, and minutes away, other restaurants and not much further is the city of Monchique. We tried the resorts, but after trying the Villa, we haven't gone back to resort style vacations. This villa is highly recommended.

This will be a lovely place to remember!

We have just returned from the delightful villa, Quinta da Mimosa, having had a wonderful holiday there. It is quite a special place and we have been able to relax and recoup ready for another busy year ahead. This beautiful and spacious villa will be a lovely place to remember when we need a chance to catch a moment to think. I will certainly miss the daily swims in the pool and the timeless moments by the stream, waiting for the kingfisher and/or water vole to appear meanwhile watching the damselflies and frogs and listening to the exotic sounding birds. T he kids enjoyed it too, even without the use of computers... It was a great location and much more convenient to reach our favourite beaches along the west coast. I must say that the maid was very helpful too and kept a very clean and tidy villa for us.

About the host

We have lived in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight (UK) most of our lives. We have a son, Chris who was born the same year as Quinta da Mimosa was being built for us and his earliest holidays were spent there.

Why they chose this property

In the late 1980's, together with Alan's mother the couple discovered this idyllic piece of the Algarve countryside set amid beautiful Mimosa trees and with an ancient ruined farmhouse. In those days, foreigners were not allowed to own much more than an acre of land in Portugal, so the only way they could purchase this old farm was to set up a Portuguese company (Quinta Mimosa S.I. Lda.) of which the family are the only shareholders.

The old farmhouse turned out to be beyond repair so Alan set out to design a new house to be built nearby, leaving the ruin as a feature in the garden. His sketches were made into working plans by a local architect and engineer and builders commenced work on the site in 1992. The house was completed in 1993.

Quinta da Mimosa is still the family's holiday home and they make it available for others to enjoy when they are not using it themselves.

What makes this property unique

Quinta da Mimosa is located in such a beautiful part of the Algarve countryside. It is an almost magical spot, set among the mimosa trees, with the small river babbling its way through the hillside on its journey down to the coast.

In the house or by the pool it is so secluded you can imagine you are miles and miles from civilization and in a world of your own, yet only 200 yards away are nice restaurants in the hamlets of Pocigais and Baraccao.

Virtually all the forested hillside within your view belongs to the villa and it is within the area of outstanding natural beauty, the protected Algarve Eco zone. As well as the mimosas, there are old orange and lemon trees, olives, cork oaks and the pretty Arbutus trees whose strawberry like fruits are used to make the strong 'moonshine' like spirit known as Medronho that is loved by the locals.

Sitting on the patio on a clear night, the stars sparkle so brilliantly you could be watching a firework display (even more so if you have too much medronho).

The house was designed to be and is, spacious and airy. Driving from the motorway the 12 km of winding road gives the illusion of being up in the mountains but it is only about 350 feet above sea level in the picturesque foothills. It is just high enough to benefit from slightly cooler air in the scorching summers, but not so high as to suffer from cold mountain air.

The house will accommodate more people but it is ideal for 8 or 9 who have plenty of space to spread out and not be under one another's feet.
