About this property
Palazzo San Bernardino awaits
Do you love the chic elegance and intimacy of fine boutique hotels? If so, then Palazzo San Bernardino is for you.
The architectural detail and design of this apartment – such as the exposed stone walls, the travertine floor tiles, and the wrought-iron artistry – evoke not only the warmth of Old-World charm, but are details that beautifully and authentically harmonize with Spello’s medieval character. The unmistakable pink/peach-coloured original stonework (found on the nearby Mount Subasio) makes Palazzo San Bernardino a truly genuine “Spello” home.
The apartment offers all the amenities required to make your stay truly comfortable and memorable. With entry level offering open space living and dining with full kitchen facilities, followed by a staircase up to the first level, where you will find a beautifully sunfilled bedroom with wardrobe and a small retreat loft with sky light and a seperate spacious bathroom with laundry facilities.
Guests of Palazzo San Bernardino have exclusive access to an independent (street-level) private entrance.
One of Spello’s most important historical streets is literally at the doorstep of Palazzo San Bernardino. Spello’s historical and cultural attractions are accessed with equal ease – most “must see” museums, churches and other sites are within a 3 to 20 minute walk.
Located in the historic centre of Spello, within the town’s ancient walls, Palazzo San Bernardino is only steps away from a myriad of pleasures … locally-owned and operated boutiques, gourmet restaurants, casual terrace-style dining, coffee and wine bars (“cantine”), galleries, artist studios, and “gelateria & pasticceria” (ice-cream & pastry/bakery) shops. Various services (including banks, pharmacy, grocery, newspaper stand, post office, train station, taxi service, etc.) are also in close walking proximity. Spello’s historical and cultural attractions are accessed with equal ease – most “must see” museums, churches and other sites are within a 3 to 20 minute walk.
Spello is a hillside village, located in Italy’s “cuore verde” (green heart) of the Umbrian countryside, that pre-dates Roman times. Don’t be fooled by its small size – Spello is a jewel of a destination with a rich historical and cultural story to tell. The warmth and hospitality of the “Spellani” townspeople will win your heart.

Why they chose this property
Palazzo San Bernardino was the family home where I was born. It has been recently lovingly restored. I tried to do it with a stylist’s keen eye and in a manner that showcases the beauty of the original stonework, while incorporating important modern amenities, design and décor, functional and comfortable furnishings, and stunning handcrafted wrought-iron work by an award-winning local artist-blacksmith. Result make me very proud.
What makes this property unique
To further capture your imagination, the origin of the building in which this residence exists is a former oratory built in the 15th century: the “Oratorio di San Bernandino”. St. Bernandino of Siena, who was a priest and Franciscan missionary, was born in 1380 in nearby Tuscany and devoted his life to preaching, helping the needy and nursing the sick. After his death in 1444, several places of worship in Umbria and Tuscany were built in his memory, including this oratory in Spello. This very building belonged to the “Confraternità di San Bernardino” (the “confraternity”, or brotherhood) that St. Bernardino established when he preached in Spello. Although the original oratory has since been adapted for residential use, the facade that was rebuilt in the 18th century, preserves the original portal.
Style, distinction, warmth, authenticity, historical value, and modernity characterize this one-bedroom-plus-loft apartment situated in Spello’s town centre.
