To reach Castoregio, the small hamlet of the high Jonio, from the Ionian state road 106, coming from Amendolara or Roseto Capo Spulico follow the signs for Castroregio, then take the state road 481 and follow it for about 10 km then follow the signs for Castroregio turn left and go up the provincial road 155 for 9 km. To reach Castroregio the mountain road has several curves and hairpin bends.

Castroregio (Kastërnexhi in Arbëreshë) is a small village of culture and language "Arbëreshë" with just over 100 inhabitants, where customs and traditions are still preserved to this day.

The country, well located, enjoys an extraordinary 360 ° view, ideal for spending periods of extreme relaxation, also considering the almost total absence of cars within the village. The country enjoys an excellent cool temperature in the summer. Visiting Castroregio you will find that the air you breathe, in addition to being clean and genuine, is magical, sometimes surreal, as if time had stopped. Recommended for families and children for the tranquility that the country offers, but also for all people who want to have a few days of complete relaxation. Also ideal for sports enthusiasts thanks to the quality of the air offered by both the town and the majestic forest and for lovers of good genuine food. In particular, the excellent air quality allows to better oxygenate both the body and the mind, thus receiving greater strength and vitality. Along the main road that leads to Castroregio at sunset, it will be easy to meet the animals of nature, such as the squirrels, the hare, the hedgehogs and the fox, in the amazement of the older ones and in the wonder of the little ones. In the village you will also find an ancient oven where you can enjoy freshly baked bread, the typical and tasty red pizza and many other typical products. Near the oven, in Via Montegrappa, there is a characteristic restaurant and bar called the "Tana del Lupo" where you can taste the excellent typical local specialties, such as rascatielli, excellent fresh homemade pasta by Mrs. Luisa. Outside, some seats with a panoramic view of the valley surrounding Castroregio will be the setting for a dinner that rediscovers the tastes and flavors of those traditions that Castroregio preserves preciously. Reservations are recommended.

The 17th century Mother Church "Madonna della Neve" of Greek-Byzantine origin located in the upper part of the village is very suggestive. Going down you can visit the Chapel of San Rocco also this of Greek-Byzantine origin.

Following the provincial road 155 for about 3 km you reach the forest where the characteristic Madonna della Neve chapel is located, surrounded by greenery among ancient trees. Here you can admire the cupstone megaliths from the Neolithic age.
A few meters away you can visit the interior of a pond that completely dries up in the summer to reach a few meters of water in the winter months.

From the pretty village of Castroregio it is possible to reach the beautiful forest in less than 5 minutes, take long walks, breathe a clean area between pine trees and ancient oaks. Tables, barbecues, fresh spring water and other conveniences are available for pleasant picnics.

In 20 minutes it is possible to reach the clear waters of the sea of Amendolara, Roseto Capo Spulico and Trebisacce already for the fourth time Blue Flag. Thanks to its excellent position, on clear days, it is possible to enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the Italian heel and the numerous villages that surround it. About 20 minutes by car you can visit Oriolo, a small medieval village where you can visit the Castle and Palazzo Giannettasio. In about an hour and a half by car you can reach the Sassi di Matera, UNESCO World Heritage, designated European Capital of Culture 2019.

On 18 August the Madonna della Neve is celebrated in the Castroregio wood with its procession around the chapel, in the afternoon the Madonna is brought by a crowd of faithful to the town to be brought back to the wood chapel in May.

On August 19th San Rocco is celebrated, patron of the town. The faithful participate very strongly in the enchantment in the square in front of the church of San Rocco, where gifts are offered to the saint.
In the afternoon at 17:00 there is the procession that starts from the Chapel of San Rocco, crosses the alleys of the town and then returns to the relative chapel. The whole procession is accompanied by the sound of the characteristic musical band.

True Italian small town living!
Be prepared for a small town! As the property details indicate, this is a place to come to relax. Bring some provisions just in case the minimarts (2) and restaurant (1) aren’t open - not unusual. The rhythm of the town is slow. That said, once we slowed ourselves to the pace of town, our visit was one we enjoyed and won’t forget. Wander around - there’s no way to get lost! And if you speak a bit of Italian you’ll find the townspeople are curious about where you’ve come from and where you’re staying. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The bar (1) is THE happening place in town. Guys drinking beer and playing Briscola, families catching up. Lively place on Friday PM. Bar guy also runs 1 of the 2 minimarts just over his store (entrance on street behind). Don’t seem to be any regular hours for opening/closing - the proprietor comes and goes so don’t give up if he’s closed. Take a seat on a bench, surf some internet and sooner or later he’ll most likely return! The apartment was clean and Maria was most helpful. We even ran into her and family having a picnic just outside of town at the site of La Capella Madonna delle Neve. We were invited to share their picnic making for a pleasant and memorable afternoon!

Autenticità e tradizione a Castroregio
Consigliatissimo ! Marco - Eleonora (Lecco)

Lovely views. Clean apartment with warm welcome
Warm welcome and tour of the village. Owners provided local bakery products, which was nice after a long drive. Property at the top of a very high hill ,so takes quite a while to get there from the bottom. Traditional apartment with good views. Restaurant and bar in the village. everyone welcoming. Woods nearby with bbq for general use. castle nearby for visiting. Apartment adequately equipped (although no tin opener), but kitchen doors and drawers have seen better days, as they are loose or don't fit. The shower is clean but has to be hand held as for not attach to walk well. Great for beach or immersing in italian life.

Vakantie in bergdorp in Calabrie, Regiocastro.
