About this property
3. Idyllic home with archways and garden, in castle near beach, 1 hr from Venice
Step through time at La Vicinia, once the medieval tribunal, now transformed into a captivating stone residence within one of Italy's most ancient private castles.
The moment you arrive, you'll feel it – this isn't just accommodation, it's living history. The same noble family who built this fortress over a millennium ago still lives in the castle's main building.
Strassoldo itself has earned its place among "I Borghi più Belli d'Italia" (Italy's Most Beautiful Villages), an exclusive designation recognizing its extraordinary historic and aesthetic value.
The heart of La Vicinia is its lovely arched portico – your personal retreat for candlelit dinners or lazy afternoons with a book and glass of local Friulian wine.
Your private garden, enclosed by a wooden fence, offers the perfect blend of intimacy and privileged access to the castle's beautiful gardens.
Inside, 150 square meters of thoughtfully restored interiors spread across two levels.
Downstairs, a welcoming living space with elegant wooden furnishings invites conversation and relaxation.
The kitchen balances rustic charm with modern conveniences for creating memorable meals with local ingredients.
Upstairs, two bedrooms – including a unique "open concept" sleeping area – feature handcrafted furniture painted by local artisans, with en-suite bathrooms providing contemporary comfort.
The surrounding village of Strassoldo is no tourist trap, but an authentic Italian borgo where crystalline spring waters flow through verdant gardens, creating an almost mystical atmosphere.
Being recognized as one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages means it has preserved its architectural integrity and cultural heritage in ways that few places can claim.
Your strategic location puts you just 20 minutes from Grado's golden beaches, one hour from Venice's iconic canals, and minutes from Roman Aquileia. Slovenia and Austria wait just beyond, perfect for day-tripping through a fascinating cultural crossroads largely untouched by mass tourism.
La Vicinia isn't simply accommodation – it's your temporary home in a living, breathing piece of Italian nobility, where the whispers of a thousand years of history enhance every moment of your stay.
Available year-round, unlike our other castle residences and pet-friendly.

About the host
Hosted by Williams di Strassoldo Gabriella

Strassoldo Castle has been central to my life journey.
As a child living abroad, my visits to my grandparents here planted seeds of wonder that grew into a deep connection with this ancient place.
When the restoration work began, much of the complex lay in ruins - the rice mill, the tower, the guards' houses, la vicinìa, and the new kitchen all needed extensive work. Even the chancellery, which had been sold years earlier, was repurchased to prevent its conversion into a brewery and to maintain the historical integrity of the estate.
Many comment that living in a castle must be a privilege. The reality is that preserving such heritage requires tremendous determination. The work has often progressed without external support, against considerable challenges. What sustains such efforts isn't just personal resolve, but perhaps also the echoes of the generations who built and maintained these walls before us.
The restoration has always followed historical principles, using natural materials and traditional techniques. Each building tells its own story, each stone speaks of continuity rather than reinvention.
The greatest reward comes from seeing visitors connect with the authentic character of the place.
Every guest who stays here becomes part of the ongoing story of Strassoldo, helping ensure this historical treasure remains for future generations to experience.
I hope you find your time here as meaningful as the centuries of history that surround you.
With warm regards,
Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo

Why they chose this property
In truth, it was Strassoldo that chose me! Sometimes, we don't choose a place; rather, the place itself calls to us with a silent yet irresistible voice. This was the case with Strassoldo, a corner of Friuli where time seems to flow at a different rhythm.
What I love about this area is its uncontrived authenticity.
Here, the crystal-clear spring waters flow through meadows and gardens, creating a landscape of rare beauty.
The air has a special quality, infused with the scents of the Friulian countryside and the history that exudes from every stone.
The seasons in Strassoldo each offer their own magic.
In spring, the gardens explode in a symphony of colours, while summer brings clear skies and warm evenings, perfect for outdoor dinners under the portico.
Autumn paints the ancient trees red and gold, and even winter, with its understated elegance, reveals the true essence of these ancient places.
What makes this area special is the perfect balance between history and nature, between past and present.
Within minutes, you can reach the golden beaches of Grado, the vineyards that produce some of Italy's finest wines, eat excellent trattorias and restaurants and stroll around the UNESCO cities of Aquileia (ancient Roman colony) and Palmanova (the star-shaped fortress built by the Venetians).
But ultimately, it's the sense of peace and belonging I feel here that makes it unique. As if, in some mysterious way, these walls and gardens had been waiting for my arrival to reveal their most authentic soul.

What makes this property unique
La Vicinia is a unique holiday home for many reasons:
It was once the medieval tribunal (court) of the castle, a fact that gives it a unique historical purpose.
The charming arched portico is one of its most distinctive features, providing a beautiful covered outdoor space that connects to the private garden.
Spacious Layout: With 150 square meters spread across two levels, it offers generous space for guests.
The property features thoughtfully restored interiors that maintain historical authenticity while providing modern comforts.
The furniture is hand-painted by local artisans, adding a unique artistic element to the interior.
Being part of a castle complex that has been continuously inhabited by the same family for over a thousand years provides an unparalleled historical context.
Strassoldo is officially recognized as one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, giving La Vicinia a setting of extraordinary beauty and historical importance.
The combination of open concept areas with more traditional rooms creates a unique flow throughout the property.
With its own garden that connects to the castle's larger park, it offers a special relationship with the natural environment, including the crystal-clear spring waters that characterize Strassoldo.
