So many problems with this rental. Owner guaranteed that the pool was available, but it wasn't, even after arriving two days late. Upon entering we immediately noticed a strong mould/mildew smell on the ground floor, which the owner completely denied, despite the fact that the guest book pages are dried and cracked from mildew. Window frames are so rusted they barely open. The kitchen is a joke.
The owner has clearly not put a penny into properly maintaining this rental, despite proclaiming how people 'love the rustic charm'. It's a dump. You've been warned.
This review reflects badly on the writer rather than on this charming old house.
These people delayed their arrival a day because the wife had strained her back and needed to rest. I wrote sympathising and saying that the delay gave me a much needed extra day because only that afternoon long term winter clients, who had a whole household of furniture with them, had left to occupy their newly bought house leaving the pool green and the patio and garden uncared for. I said that these things sometimes happen and I hoped that we would have got the pool clean in a few days.
Their arrival was then delayed a further day because of the wife’s back and they stated that they would arrive between 2- 3 p.m. When no-one arrived by the evening I was worried that the wife might be ailing so emailed them saying where I would leave the key in case of a late arrival. The following morning I received an email stating “We arrived later after being stuck in traffic in Seville. Unfortunately the staircase to the upper floor is too challenging for my wife right now so we had to find alternative accomodation last night. Also we are disappointed in the condition of the house – the pool has not been cleaned. The patio has not been swept and is overgrown, the ground floor has a strong mildew/mould smell-has it not been aired for some time?”
I replied” I am sorry about your problems. La Mora is a comfortable old village house and a favourite with visitors. I emailed you that the English winter clients (who loved the house) had only left the afternoon before your stated date of arrival therefore the house has been well heated and aired and I do not detect any smell of mildew. I did warn you that the clients had let the pool go green. It takes some time for the chemicals to work to get it back into order again. Both the plumber and myself have been labouring over it daily. The cleaner swept the patio thoroughly and I have swept it with water daily since - the last time at 1.30 on the day of your arrival. The patio vegetation has also been cut back but any tree/bush foliage overhead is left deliberately to give much-needed shade for the extreme summer heat”
Some time later I received a letter asking for money back and now this review.
Owners and cleaners go to no end of trouble, with very little reward, to try to make a client’s stay satisfactory and such clients prevent others from a stay in a house which they would enjoy and to which clients return time after time.
La Mora Jimena
A nice House in a great location, if you like as we do local experiences rather than traditional British Costa holiday. Great Tapas bars in easy walking distance , Good Quality Restaurants within 5 minutes drive.
The only downsize was the house could do with some very simple updating its a bit tired , and there was no air condition. A must have in August . Simple Dyson or other free standing unit in bedrooms would solve this without large investment
Beautiful and charming house. Lovely surroundings and peaceful.
Thank you. It is a comfortable old village house with a nice feeling of having been lived in by happy families.
Real village house in handy location
The upstairs open plan kitchen, dining room, lounge is nice and leads out onto the terrace with views to the mountains beyond. There are lots of books and the kitchen is well equiped although some of the fixtures and fittings have seen slightly better days and the view would be improved by lopping the tree halfway down the garden.
Downstairs the beds are comfortable - at least in the room with blue bed covers that we used. There is a lot of information and leaflets about local sights and walks and Jean was very helpful advising us. We visited: the nearby Rio Hozgarganta; the Cueva de Pileta (prehistoric cave paintings); el Chorreon de las Naranjas waterfall (quite a long walk); Ronda (lots to see there) and the beach at Alcaidesa (just up the coast from Gibraltar.
We got some local colour when a group of singers gathered outside the house to serenade a wedding party coming out of the house opposite and I also enjoyed the wind band mostly comprised of young people playing next to the route of a local race to support the runners.
The sunbathing area next to the pool is not overlooked and the pool was good to cool off in. When we were there there were lots of roses in bloom.
There is a range of restaurants from basic to fairly upmarket within easy walking distance. A local bakery is just past the end of the road and there are two small supermarkets a little further away. The lady in one was keen to help me with my Spanish
More shopping and a post office is in the town centre. A car was very useful but if you don't have one there is a station at Los Angeles 2 or 3 km away. The trains are not very frequent but they do offer an alternative way to get into the area.
Delightful Stay in La Mora
Rather overdue with my review but could not forget our wonderful time in this charming house in one of my favourite destinations. La Mora was perfect for a relaxing, self-catering stay in Jimena and Jean was really kind and helpful. The house and outdoor areas are gorgeous and had everything we could possibly need. We spent a lot of time on the terrace and by the pool, enjoying the tranquility and the splendid view, and also made good use of the kitchen and dining area, having friends over for dinner which was nice to be able to do. Great sleeps too. The only downside was having to stop pretending that we lived there and come back to reality!
What a lovely review. Thank you. It gives me an extra lift when guests enjoy their. stay
Fabulous Relaxing stay in a Real Spanish home
Our family stayed at La Mora.. two adults and two boys age 6 & 2 and we loved it here.
The house is so authentic and comfortable..especially the upstairs with the balcony looking down to the pool.
The boys loved the pool and spent hours in there and with such lovely views behind its an extremely relaxing place to be.
Two lovely sized bedrooms and bathrooms, good amenities with washer etc. The property was spotlessly clean and the neighbours were friendly.
Jean is very helpful and we have recommended this house to our friends.
We will definately be back next year!
The picturesque village of Jimena de La Frontera, built on a free-standing hill topped by a romantic Romano-Moorish castle, is in the foothills of the Ronda mountains midway between Gibraltar and Ronda. Malaga airport is two hours away and Gibraltar one hour. The house overlooks the beautiful Hozgarganta river and the famous Alcornocales park, one of the largest wild areas left in Europe. It is a paradise for bird watchers and botanisers. The whole area is of great natural and historic interest with many famous towns within easy reach. There are beaches within half an hour, golf, polo. wind surfing and water parks at the coast and only a boat trip of under an hour to get to mysterious Morocco. A swim in its oleander-fringed river, reputedly the cleanest in Spain, is a delight. There is horse-riding, tennis and go-carting from the village, a bird-park in lush gardens and a small zoo nearby. Donkeys, mules and goats wander around and the people are very friendly. This is the real Spain
Other Activities: Birdwatching, painting, botanising, visiting sites of archaeological, historic and architectural interest
Golf: THe famous Valderrama golf course is only half an hour away and there are several more golf courses in the vicinity.
Ski: Skii-ing in the Sierra Nevada is sufficiently distant to require a night away.
