About this property

Pātiki cottage - Pakawau


This historical and cozy bach has a rural outlook and is just a short stroll to the beach. A character bach that started life as a Mill worker’s hut, it has since been a holiday park cabin and home. It is now enjoyed as a holiday house, and is well equipped for your stay. This is the place to stay if you want a true kiwi bach experience and don’t expect perfection.

The bach is a perfect location to get to the best parts of Golden Bay: Wharariki, Farewell Spit, Whanganui Inlet & Kaihoka lakes. There are many great walks and beaches nearby, good swimming spots at Pakawau Beach, along with abundant birdlife. The bach is also in the heart of Kingfish country - an incredible flats fishing experience and an international fly fishing destination.

Sunny & warm the bach is perfect for visits all year round. There is a new log burner with plenty of wood making it very cosy in winter. There is lots of outdoor furniture, board games, books, TV and DVD player, BBQ, and the kitchen is very well equipped. We are chipping away to make improvements all the time.

Pets are welcome and encouraged! The section is fully fenced. We just ask that you clean up after them & not let them on the furniture.

Currently the bach can sleep 4-5 people comfortably (1 x Queen bed, 1 x double bed/with single bunk on top).

Please bring your own linen & towels. (Pillows, Duvet & cover provided)

We ask guests to leave the back as they found it- clean & tidy.

We enjoyed our visit

The property is classic Kiwi batch, a bit old but very charming and full of character. The facilities are good with fully equipped kitchen, even some free coffee, tea and condiments. There are books and board games as well. The location is also very good just a minute walk from the beach. On a negative side the property needs an upgrade, lick of paint, curtains that fit the windows would go long way. You are required to clean the house after your stay, including washing the sheets and towels. I have never stayed in a batch so not sure if this is the norm, but it surprised me. Overall the communication with the owners was great, they seemed very friendly and helpful. We definitely enjoyed our stay at this property.

At the end of the world

Pakawau is the at the base of Farewell Spit and has a manageable number of visitors. Its a wild place with attractions that are not over-built. We walked on the beach, visited Westhaven Inlet, Wharariki Beach and Farewell Spit. The house is perfectly located and comfortable. We had a dog and she loved it all. There's a shop and a cafe/restaurant nearby. The weather precluded swimming and there were quite a few signs of stingrays.There was a whale stranding the day we left.

Pātiki Paradise.

This whare has all amenities but most importantly is location, all the coolest stuff to see are right there. My whanau first visit to Te Waipounamu and what a banger of a start, mauri ora!

Chill out in Pakawau

We enjoyed the low key nature of this listing. We'd just come off the Heaphy Track so appreciated having a washing machine, and nice cosy woodburner. A greta place to chill out and relax, and a base for more exploration in Golden Bay.

Comfortable home in a great location

The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was particularly good and the dogs enjoyed the sand flats and Pakawau Beach.

Just the perfect location....

We are happy overall with the bach being a perfect location for all the amenities we visited during our stay. It is a dog-friendly place but could do with a vacuum and freshen up as dog hairs can be found on couches and other areas.

Highly Recommend!

Such a bright andhappy cottage to return to after daytime hiking and beach adventures. When we arrived the cottage required a good vacuum and window wash to clear out the resident spiders and cobwebs. Great BBQ and kitchen supplies, shower, book and games selection. Wonderful bar and restaurant nearby, across from the campground. Friendly neighbours and lovely horse across the lane. Ample cleaning supplies for all needs.
