Gated Oceanfront Home With “Wow Factor” Views And Its Own Private Beach

Gated Oceanfront Home with “Wow Factor” Views and a Private Staircase to its own Private Beach

Note: I just completed an exterior renovation over the last 6 months. The garden has John Watson moonlighting which was converted to LED moonlight. Video to the street side gate with electronic door release. Exterior of the home repainted. Garden has had extensive work. I am the third owner and was the Landscape Architect on the property in 1979. In 1979 the home and site went through an extensive update by the previous owner who was an Architect. Upgrades to the home as well. This is a private home with all the collections and art intact. Its staying in an owner quality property. It has a fully insulated roof. It appears to be a charmer but it is a fully functioning updated home. I sold my Montecito Estate and am replacing some dressers with better pieces. New photos will post soon. Retractable awnings for the deck and Lanai. The banded furniture is original to the 1940 construction. It has passed down through the subsequent owners.

This classic charming beach house is located in prestigious South Laguna, midway between the Montage Hotel and Resort and the Ritz Carlton. With expansive views of the coastline and Catalina Island from almost every room, the home has its own steps that lead down to a private roped-off section of a spectacular, and relatively secluded, sandy beach, known as Thousand Steps Beach. It also has a private air conditioned cabana on the beach stocked with beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, toys, boogie boards, and even a bar refrigerator w separate freezer that you can fill with chilled beverages and supplies for dining al fresco by the crashing waves. (public beaches in Orange County prohibit alcohol on the beach, but this prohibition does not apply to our private beach, so you are free to sip a bottle of your favorite wine while sitting on the sand, watching the sunset). Thousand Steps Beach is famous for surfing, skim boarding, and volleyball, as well as swimming and sun bathing. There are numerous tide pools to explore and a sea cave that marks the entrance to Secret Cove. In the summer, lifeguards are stationed on the beach. There is a public restroom down the cove.

The home, which was featured in Coastal Living Magazine,”Going to Hawaii without the plane ride” is perfect for entertaining because it has three separate living areas. The first area is the main house, situated off a lushly-landscaped courtyard with potted plants and an historic Malibu-tile fountain. It features beamed ceilings, wide-plank Douglas Fir hardwood floors, and two working fireplaces. A spacious great room, fully-stocked kitchen, dining alcove, lanai, and powder room are located at the entrance level of the house. Walk down one flight, and you’ll find a master suite that has a seating area and an en-suite bathroom with a soaking tub. This level also has a guest bedroom with a queen bed and en-suite bath. Both bedrooms have beautiful ocean views.
The second living area is an ocean-view guest suite with a king bed, seating area, fireplace, tiki bar, kitchenette, and bath with shower. Adjacent to this guest suite is a large wooden deck topped by a Jacuzzi spa, lounge chairs, propane BBQ, dining table and chairs, and an outdoor hot-water shower so you can rinse off after swimming.

The third living area, above the main house, is a guesthouse that has a seating area, a recessed king bed, a full bathroom, and a bedroom with a full-sized bed. This guest house has ocean views and is air conditioned.

The entire house has zoned air conditioning (a rare commodity in ocean front houses in Laguna Beach) wireless internet, cable television, flat screen TVs, Blu Ray & DVD player, a music system, and a professional Wolf gas range. Weekly maid service is included in the rent.

This is a very private residence. At street level, only the two-car garage, the parking deck, and the secured entrance gate are visible. Parking is available for four cars. The staircase to the sand is accessed through locked gates.

Located minutes from downtown Laguna Beach, there is a trolley stop across the street. Trolleys are free and run approximately every 20 minutes, so you can leave the car at home. Several excellent restaurants are within walking distance.

Laguna Beach is a charming city located on the Pacific Coast, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Because of this location, it has ideal weather all year long, and has been a year round retreat for art lovers, nature enthusiasts, and beach goers. Since its founding in 1887, Laguna Beach has been art colony. It now hosts the Sawdust Festival, Festival of the Arts, and Pageant of the Masters. It is a family-friendly town, located within a reasonable drive to Southern California's theme parks, including Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Legoland, Seaworld, and Universal Studios.

Due to local regulations, stays must be for 30 plus days. Unfortunately, we absolutely cannot accept nightly or weekly rental requests.

Gorgeous Laguna Beach House

Truly wonderful period house overlooking Thousand steps beach. A daily step workout down the private access to the sandy beach. The evening sunsets were amazing with the sun setting behind Catalina Island. The house is tastefully decorated with a blue marine theme. A gourmet kitchen provided ample appliances with a Wolf range. The sun room had direct views along the whole stretch of the beach to gaze at the surf or watch the sunsets in the evening. A tremendous house to rest and enjoy some peace and quiet.

A Month at Laguna Beach

This was an outstanding property for our family. Some are in CA, some came from IN, two from the East Coast and 2 from Ecuador. The beach is spectacular, the waves soporific! There are good public tennis courts and walking and hiking options in Laguna. The kitchen and grills accommodated our cooks. Parking is a challenge but we managed. Property manager very attentive. A really lovely place.

Paradise Found

Oh, how we miss Laguna Beach already! This home is an absolute treasure. The owners are lovely and made everything about our stay perfect. The home has the most amazing view, complete privacy, and is very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed. Thousand Steps beach is amazing! Less crowded than other Laguna beaches, and very picturesque. I wouldn’t hesitate to book this home again. We loved every minute! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Heaven on Earth

We have stayed in many rental houses in Laguna and none of them compare or are as special as this one. The owners could not have been kinder and more gracious to our family. The property is immaculate and if you love to cook this is the home to be in. The kitchen is equipped like a home not like a rental. We loved everything about this property from beginning to end!

Five Stars and Then Some.

An exquisite property. Anything one would need has been anticipated and provided. If it hasn't, the owners respond immediately. The location couldn't be better--close enough to both Dana Point and Main Beach in Laguna to visit either with ease, far enough away to feel secluded from the weekend crowds if that's you're thing. Best vacation home I've ever rented.

Best Location

What a wonderful homely house in a brilliant location. The pictures do not do this home justice from the moment you walk in you feel comfortable and captivated by the views. The beds are very comfortable and the location amazing, simply walk down the stairs and you are on one of California’s best kept secrets, “1000 steps beach” not busy just beautiful. Our hosts were welcoming and thoughtful. We had a fabulous time and thoroughly recommend this home

Great Beach House

This is the best beach house we ever rented by far. As soon as you close the gate, you enter another world. Close to everything you would want in Laguna, yet private. Once we didn’t leave for 3 days and then only for groceries. The views from the main house are 5 star and the separate rooms below the garage and house are perfect for visitors, while maintaining your own privacy. The beach never gets crowded. If you just want to relax, take a swim in the ocean, enjoy the views and sunsets, this place can’t be beat. Well furnished and fully equipped.

Perfect Beach Getaway

I greatly enjoyed my stay in this beautiful home. It has what I would consider a classic beach cottage style with all of the modern comforts. As soon as I walked through the gate and down steps to the entry courtyard, I knew I had found a wonderful place to escape and relax. There are lots of great places to curl up with a good book, but I think my favorite place for this was the secret garden at the foot of the cliff and just a few steps up from the private beach. Throughout the house, you have beautiful views of the beach and the ocean. The description the owners give of the house is very accurate. I definitely would enjoy staying here again, and I am happy to recommend it.

Tasteful Furnishings equipped with top quality amenities Stunning views, handy to all

We had a great time there, enjoying the ambiance. The views from the lanai were ever changing with the ocean panorama. Walking on the beautiful beach, walking to the restaurants, just relaxing on the lanai , all was handy and delightful. The fully equipped kitchen was a plus for our family. Certain will be returning there every year if possible.

Stunning beachfront home with gorgeous views

From start to finish our stay in this home was fantastic. We drove to Laguna Beach in the evening, but had no trouble finding the garage and gate in the dark. Parking in the garage is easy. Once we entered the locked gate we discovered a beautiful oasis. The courtyard is serene and inviting. We stayed in the main house and had plenty of room to spread out and relax. The home has bountiful natural light throughout, and from every room there is an ocean view. We spent a lot of time on the lanai. The furnishings are luxurious and welcoming, and the kitchen is well stocked. We took advantage of all the outdoor amenities, including the hot tub and private beach. The private beach is the perfect place for a sunset picnic and a bottle of wine. This home is perfectly located in Laguna Beach. It is a short drive to art galleries, shopping, and world class resorts and restaurants. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Excellent home

My family and I spent the holidays here. What a lovely home. We had campfires on the private beach below the house several nights. The ocean lulled us to sleep each night. We will definitely be returning in the future.

The Full Laguna Experience

We loved this home because it offered the full Laguna Beach experience. First, it sits high on a bluff with amazing ocean views and also has its own private stairway down to the beach. We felt like we almost had our own little private beach. And the spacious house echoes its setting with chic "beachy" furnishings and art. It was so comfortable we spent a lot of time just relaxing and enjoying the views and the alfresco dining room. Plus, the home is right in the middle of everything -- restaurants, art galleries, bookstores. We were really pleased with the house and hope to return.

Remarkable Laguna property

I love his property. Located on one of Laguna's most beautiful coves, this house offered more than we expected. The main house has a large living/dining area plus a beautiful sun room where we look in spectacular ocean views and sunsets. The master bedroom is extremely comfortable and my teen daughter loved her adjacent bedroom suite surrounded by windows overlooking the beach. Two separate apartments gave friends the perfect place to stay and afforded privacy with separate decks (and Jacuzzi) and common space for everyone to come together for family meals and good times. Can't wait to go back.

Southern California at it's best.

There are only a few holidays I can recall where I have enjoyed myself so much. Laguna Beach is a great vacation destination with much to offer in the way of recreation, leisurely shopping, and sampling of many fine restaurants and eateries. Our short side trips to San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Nigel were lots of fun. My wife, daughter and I just loved staying at Three Arches House. It is charming, very comfortable and, just beyond the entry gate, a bit of a private paradise. Perched above a beautiful section of beach with a fantastic view of white water and the cove, all framed by majestic palm trees...it was hard to not just stay put. Nothing like savoring that first cup of coffee while watching the waves come in. Sunsets were fabulous and made our evenings at home extra special. And falling asleep at night to the sound of the waves was a real treat. We also had friends and family come to visit while we were in residence. The house is large and very accommodating for groups to enjoy. Everyone had a great time. Would highly recommend.

Perfect Family Vacation

This was a great vacation home for our entire family including our 2 teenage sons. Our sons wanted to spend their time exploring and having fun without their parents. They spent most days on the beach and we could actually watch them from the house. They also had their own cottage which made them feel very independent. My wife and I also had time to hike, explore the art galleries and wine taste. In the evenings we would usually have dinner on the deck watching the sunset and sharing our day. We had a great time!

Excellent beach house stay

This house has the most extraordinary views of Thousand Steps Beach. We watched the sunset every night from the lanai and it was our favorite part of our stay. We also loved that there's a section of the beach that is private and roped off so you can have a bonfire down on the beach. There are three levels to the house and each has a private entrance, so it is great for a group with multiple couples or children who want their own space. We really enjoyed Laguna Beach, especially the Pageant of the Masters and the art fairs which took place in town during the summer. This is definitely a highly recommended rental.

Magical vacation

We loved this beach property!!! This is not a McMansion on the beach. The three beach cottages that comprise this private property are beautifully maintained and immaculately clean and are situated right above the beach to give maximum views of the ocean and sunset. Laguna Beach is known for its art scene and wonderful restaurants. We rented in August and spent our days running on the beach in swim suits and our evenings in a sweater barbecuing on the deck enjoying the sunset. The owners were very responsive and the property was better than described!

Wake up to paradise

Every morning started the same, I would wake up, brew some coffee, plop down on a chair, and look out at the ocean. Usually my wife and kids would join me shortly after I woke up, but that solitary time spent staring at the serene view of surf crashing into rock, that's what I think about when I need to unwind. My family and I stayed at this spectacular retreat for two weeks over the summer of 2014. It had all the features you could want from a beach house. It had tons of bedrooms, which came in handy when my daughter asked if her boyfriend could come on the trip. Robby had a fine time sleeping in a completely separate apartment-style room. I could see that room coming in handy for any renters that want to bring friends, but want their friends, or family, to have a space of their own. The ease of access to the beach was also a huge advantage. Even staying a block from the ocean can be burdensome, having to drag and haul all your stuff across the PCH is never enjoyable. Thankfully a quick hop down the private stairs was all that was necessary here. My family must have walked up and down the stairs a hundred times in the time that we stayed there, and I wish we could walk them a hundred more. The owners were very accommodating, and were always quick to contact me back whenever I needed something. Their daughter, Danielle, showed us around the place, and made sure we felt like we were at home. They even told us where to find an HDMI cord when my son forgot his when he tried to setup his game console. Overall they were excellent owners. The close proximity to town, the convenience of beach access, and the view, oh the view, are what makes this home a terrific rental. Thanks Maureen and Bob!

About the host

Host profile image
My name is Bob. This house was purchased in 1992. I am a landscape architect who has maintained an office in Laguna Beach since 1972. As well as in Palm Beach, Greenwich, Beverly Hills and Montecito. I was the original landscape architect for the property in 1979. Featured in the Robb Report Best of the Best Landscape Architecture as well as the top 12 Landscape Architects in the Robb Report. I also joined with my former Attorney neighbor to fight for restoring the Private Beach with the City and Coastal Commission.

Why they chose this property

I purchased the house in this location because of the expansive ocean and Catalina Island views and because we think Thousand Steps Beach, with its many tide pools, is the most beautiful beach in Laguna. We purchased this house in particular because of its charming architectural details including high wood-beamed ceilings and wide-planked Douglas Fir floors. We enjoy having guests and entertaining, so the layout of the house, with its separate sections for guest privacy, works well for us.

What makes this property unique

This house has wide ocean views from every room. The roped off private beach area is a real benefit because it frees you to legally drink and dine on the private beach, where Orange County law prohibits such actions on public beaches. The private cabana on the sand is stocked with a refrigerator, beach toys, chairs, and umbrellas, making a day at the beach very simple, even with children. Finally, there is air conditioning throughout the house, something that is rarely found in beach-front houses in Laguna.
