About John Schroeder
I'm a philosophy professor at a liberal arts college near Washington DC (St. Mary's College), and my wife and co-host "Am" is an artist originally from Thailand. We recently returned from living in Bangladesh for 4 years where I was working to help create a new university for women (Asian University for Women). We both spend lots of time in SE Asia, and I take students to Thailand for 3 weeks during the summer as a class on Engaged Buddhism. For the past 6 months we've been really busy renovating the apartments in our building--knocking down walls putting up drywall, tiling kitchens and bathrooms, and other fun things like that. Our summer project is to turn the backyard into an area with a colorful garden, a fire-pit, and a creative space for making things. You're free to use the space to hang out, pick chiles from the garden, or make something creative to hang on the fence!

Hidden DC Pet friendly gem
We were traveling through DC on a road trip so we were only here for a short night, but I wish we could have stayed longer! The space was amazing and they were so accommodating of us and our two pups. The shower feels like you’ve checked into a spa. Will definitely stay here again next time we’re in Dc!
Spacious, comfortable, cheerful apartment
Wow, we were really impressed when we walked in. The apartment was way more spacious than we expected and the decor and lighting so pleasant and welcoming. It was wonderful to get a great night’s sleep on a very comfortable bed and the rain shower in the morning was so refreshing. If you had time to stay, you could actually cook food in the well appointed kitchen. John, the owner has been responsive from the moment we signed up. We would highly recommend this property.
Clean, Comfortable, Nice!
From entry way to the backyard we found everything in this property to be extremely well cared for and clean! All the accommodations were also more than we expected (2 adults 2 children) very comfortable, a cozy place to relax. We very much enjoyed this experience having convenient parking and quick access to the National Mall/Museums ect. Our host made herself available to us and was very gracious and kind. We would definitely recommend this property and hope to return when it's warmer out!
Best experience staying in Washington
This apartment was fantastic for my Sister and me. We had privacy and free parking in a clean and relaxing unit. We loved the kitchen and deck. We had everything we needed and a lovely large bathroom that felt like a spa. Using the bus system was new to us but that turned out to be super easy. Walking in the neighborhood was pleasant and I felt safe. Thanks for a great stay!
I’m not a person who gushes, but the apartment and the owners were fantastic! The space was roomy and well-appointed. Their attention to detail is extraordinary—toothbrushes and toiletries in the bathroom, Kleenex at bedside, breakfast items in the fridge, a guide to the neighborhood on the apartment laptop...just to start. Communication was excellent. Parking wasn’t a problem, even in a busy neighborhood. The apartment is close to public transport, in a very walkable area. I haven’t even packed yet and I’m plotting my return :-)
Can I move in? Lol
AMAZING! The readily available info, the organization, the correspondence back and forth, just so very accommodating...awesome! The place is perfect, EVERYTHING you need!
I’m local and I can’t wait to get back!
Have a look at my guidebook that talks about the apartment, how to get around DC, and reviews of pubs, cafes, and restaurants nearby.
