About this property

Longhouse Farm Contemporary Home Overlooking Mason Bay

Imagine compass views from every room's big glass windows, designed by a student of Frank Loyd Wright, quietly secluded on the highest point of Moosabeck Peninsula, overlooking Mason Bay to open sea. Cornered in blueberry fields and backed by mature spruce, our 150 acres provide easy trails and beautiful streams; even a secret marsh lake. Consider early morning birding in a flush of warblers and nuthatch, or find yourself picking blue berries like Lil Sal, and making jellies in a top of the line chef kitchen, or preparing fresh veges from our gardens,. This house lives with art and fine hand-built furniture and ceramics to enjoy. From here travel 20 minutes to bold- coast cliff hikes or select your own lobsters from the Jonesport docks. Simply it’s a contemporary home built close to nature where viewing stars sunrise moonrise or birds or sometimes a fox moose or bear from living room, screen porches and decks is a part of any moment here.

You are welcome to play with our Shelty, Opa. . Or consider spending the day at nearby Roque Bluffs Park’s sandy beach or travel to Acadia National Park an hour away. Another favorite day trip destination is to Campobello lsland in New Brunswick ,Canada where the Roosevelt International park resides. (Bring your passport) There you will find our joint international history , view the Roosevelt home, and walk the family trails or bike the island. At the close of any day , back at home, you will enjoy wood burning fires in the living room or den, entertained by firefly fireworks and whippoorwill magic calls. Of course, stargazers are in heaven here with the now hard to find, rare, clear skies minus light pollution.

You are welcome, at Longhouse Farm. The owners are close by, living in the guest cottage. Our aim is to be available and helpful but not intrusive. We really want you to have a fabulous vacation and are available to help with your plans. We have set up by the week rental Sunday to Sunday, min 1week.
Thank you for coming. It’s exciting to have you here.

August Week at Longhouse Farm
We couldn't have been happier with our stay on Longhouse Farm! The setting and house are out-of-this-world as the house looks out onto Mason Bay in coastal Maine. We were thrilled with the trails, conserved properties, and farm stands that are very close by. But most of all we found Helen to be the most gracious host and an extraordinary guide to the area. Without a doubt, we'll be back.

Want to get away from the rat race? This is the place.
We were looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives, do some hiking and spend some time relaxing, and the Longhouse delivered. Our host, Helen, greeted us on arrival, showed us around and had a freshly baked, homemade blueberry pie waiting for us. The beautiful and unique home provided amazing views and we enjoyed several hikes directly from and on the property. Helen and Opa were great hosts and provided a wealth of knowledge and worthwhile suggestions for activities. We enjoyed Sandy River Beach, Quoddy Head Park, Eastport for a whale watching tour, and hiking in Acadia among other things. Pat's Pizza and Helen's in Machias were very good choices for eating out. Book early to go kayaking with Sunrise in Machias as they get busy. Overall we had a great time relaxing and enjoying the outdoors Down East.

Hi, I am a former summer camp and school director with a great love for nature and the out of doors. I was raised in the mountains of NC but have found the Maine coast to be the perfect home. If you love a life next to the sea with the benefit of cool fir forests and sunny hill top blueberry meadows we have plenty in common. My husband and I built this architectural open home featuring a life style of culinary access and wide entertainment. We love the views and big light spaciousness of our home and sharing it with others.
We love to garden hence all the flowers and vegetables. Also there is no end to easy hikes on our private property, back into our 150 acres of woods or along the sea or river. Birdwatchers are in heaven here. We love to canoe or kayak and have enjoyed all the guided excursions nearby. Let’s just say this is a very unusual place of Nature Joy and we would love to share it with you. Helen and Mo (in spirit) and pup Opa

Why they chose this property

We believe that to choose this property is to choose a connection without interruption to the natural world. You are choosing an oases. No road traffic sounds, nor houses nearby, nor obtrusive lights, or limited spaces will impose. These 150 acres are conserved land with protected forest, wildlife , streams, marsh, and meadow and a century old blueberry farm. And it is accessible by pathways. You will hear and be surprised by how easily connected you will become to nature’s rhythms around you, like nesting bird songs, deer snorting, frogs singing, fireflies lighting, coyote howling, turkey foraging, and whatever you personally discover. Something new always surprises us , like whippoorwill night songs.
Of course the house and views are wondrous and comfortable, the culinary possibilities by sea amazing, and the historical charm of Maine activities abounds. It is very unusual to be in the midst of blueberry fields and be able to jam them. You are also welcome to pick from the vegetable or flower gardens. Other markets are not far away just yielding to further creativity.
If you bring children, magic is in store. The fairy culture is everywhere at Longhouse Farm. Not to mention streams and forest to play in. Because we have many grandchildren ourselves, our libraries are fully packed. There are numerous rocks and fort building opportunities all around. Yes we will want you to be safe so we ask for consciousness on that, i as a former camp director can help on that issue.
I am also available to help you plan wonderful adventures from whale watching to natural history and hike and bike excursions. Beaches are nearby but there is so much more than that.
