About the host
Hosted by Anne Beckmann
The house bears the name of an old Catalan woman, my French "grandmother of choice" Josephine, who lived in Douilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse below the great Carthusian castle of the same name and grew wine (including an excellent Macabeu vielle vigne) and vegetables there. She was the grandmother of my exchange partner Béatrice and I spent many weeks with her as a child in summer, while Béa buffaloed in Avignon for her exams. She and her daughter, my host mother Janine, cooked deliciously for me and tought me a lot about rural life. Besides her vineyard and the big vegetable garden she also had various chickens and rabbits and dogs and cats. She and Janine, who still lives in Douilhac today together with her lovely husband Éli, taught me many recipes and drew our family's attention to the cultural wealth of the Laroque region, which eventually led us to settle here.
Laroque has ever since been our second home for more than 35 years. For many years friends came and spent time with us at our holiday home, then friends of friends and friends of friends of friends... and word of mouth spread and we finally ended up renting out our holiday home, which was originally situated a little further down the mountain, but is now permanently rented to a friend who has fallen in love with the cottage.

Why they chose this property
When we found this house here, it blew us away. My mother, who is living with her partner down in the village on the way to the domain for years, had heard about it from a neighbour and drew my attention to it, and I had flown to France to see it. I remember the first time I entered the terrace and saw the view. I could see on the left the snow-covered Canigou and on the right the sea and the mountains behind the plain and all places in between.... also our old holiday house (called Belle Vue) has a great view, but here we are even higher here and the huge terrace.... I called my husband and said that he didn't have to come to look at it. I had already decided for it.
Since then we have settled here beautifully and come here with our adult children or friends. We don't always need both appartments so we are happy to share our Villa Josephine with you.

What makes this property unique
My best time starts in the Morning. I love to stay in bed watching the morning dizzines do feed away uncovering the splendid view over the Roussilon plein. (I have included a photo with this morning view out of the bed room window in this listing to share it with you.)
When my husband gets up, he first checks out, if he can see Queribus. Queribus is a half ruind medieval cathar castle on the other side of the Roussillon plein. You have to really know, where to look and have good eyes to see it, as it is 70 Km away, but it has always been a sign for the clear weather he loves so much in this region. We are still discussing, if we can see Peyrepertuse, (the other big cathar castle of the Corbières, where Josephine lived) but there might be a mountain in between.
It's also an advantage that the house is situated in the Domaine des Alberes, a part of the village that is still well above the medieval centre and the castle of Laroque on the slopes of the Alberes, as we share a big swimming pool that is kept clean on a dayly basis (and tennis court) in this community. Otherwise it's a quiet, tranquil place, but close to the lively coastal towns and beaches if you want to spend the day on the beach. Since the Chemin du Vilar ends just above the house, there is hardly any traffic. Only mountain bikers can be seen torturing themselves up the mountain because of the rewarding view. (How nice that we only have to sit on the terrace to enjoy it. ;-) Just above the house there are several walking and hiking trails that lead through the Alberes up to Noillos, the highest mountain of the Alberes.
I also enjoy the surrounding villages, like St Genis, Sorede, St André, Argeles-sur-mer, Collioure, Port Vendres, Brouilla, Bages, Elne and of caus Laroque itself, when I go down to do my daily grocery shopping. All of them have medieval structures and in addition to the typical tranquil landscape marked by a wine-growing tradition, they also hold some wonderful cultural treasures.
