About this property
La Cachette stone detached gite in peaceful Normandy with own private garden
La Cachette is a detached stone cottage, set in its own private garden with stunning panoramic views of the beautiful Sienne river valley.
Located about 300 metres along a country lane which leads directly to a footpath beside the river, the gite is in the middle of a conservation area renowned for its stunning scenery. A wonderful riverside walk meanders its way to Gavray, and many other superb walks are accessible direct from the house. Fishing is available in the river within 200 yards of the gite and the area is teeming with wildlife such as deer, badgers, hare, buzzards, owls, and even the occasional otter.
Le Krill restaurant is 5 minutes from the gite. This has been totally refurbished by new owners and is very popular with locals. Best to book in advance for Friday or Saturday.
The local market town of Gavray, which is just 5 minutes by car, has a supermarket as well as a choice of restaurants, banks, shops etc. A very popular market is held in the town every Saturday morning.
The pristine sandy beaches of the west coast are a mere 20 minutes drive away.
The port of Granville is wonderful for shopping, and eating out in one of the fish restaurants surrounding the quayside. Or maybe catching a ferry to one of the Channel Islands.
The famous 'copper' town of Villedieu les Poeles is 20 minutes away and has lots of museums to visit. One place is the Bell Foundry where they recently made one for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. There is a very popular market here every Tuesday.
Also 20 minutes away is the pretty town of Coutances with its impressive Cathedral and wonderful gardens to walk around opposite the main square.
Then of course there is Mont St Michel, one of the top places to visit in the whole of France, or Bayeux famous for its Tapestry and fabulous Cathedral. Here also is the British War Cemetery which is the largest Second World War cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, The cemetery contains 4,648 burials, mostly from the Invasion of Normandy. The D-D beaches are all within easy reach.
We have been open for 21 years with many guests returning regularly.

Dear Wayne and Jackie, Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Dave and I are so very happy you enjoyed your stay in La Cachette. Perhaps our paths will cross again one day. very best wishes Pat and Dave
The Cachette was an absolute dream. We stopped for a few days between our visits to the Loire Valley and Paris and it was our favorite part of our trip. We ended up getting engaged there, so it will always hold a special place in our hearts! Pat and Dave are wonderful hosts and such sweet people. Freddie, their dog, is equally sweet and we wanted to steal him! If you’re looking for a comfortable, quiet place to unwind, this is it.
A week equipped gite with pretty much everything you could need and well located to explore Normandy attractions as well as some quieter smaller towns and villages and beeches near by.
The owners Pat & Dave are great, very friendly and attentive should you need anything, and a mine of information.
We spent a great two weeks here and look forward to visiting again.

Petit but perfectly formed
This was the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. Very well equipped including a lovely 'welcome' pack and all that was needed to chill in comfort. A shame that our hosts were away and that both recommended restaurants were closed. We may well have to return if only to say 'hello' and sample the local cuisine. Do hope the cats are still thriving.

Thank you for the lovely comments regarding your holiday in La Cachette. We are so happy that you found everything as you hoped it would be and were able to relax and make the most of your stay.
We are sorry we were not there to meet you on this occassion but hopefully if you return as planned we will see you then. Thank you again for booking with us. best wishes Pat & Dave
Lovely retreat in the French Normandy countryside. More suited to the customer wanting a quiet getaway than a lux setting. The host couple were fabulous, going out of their way to be of service.
The bed was only a double sized, very little upstairs space, the bathroom was on the first floor down very steep and narrow stairs.
Lovely below our expectations.
Lovely little gîte, tucked away from the hustle of life. Some lovely walks from the property into the countryside. The gîte has most things that you would need. We had no wifi during our stay which was very frustrating.
Nearest village has plenty to offer.
Extremely friendly and helpful owner living across the road.

Thank you for your lovely comments. WI-FI in the gite was a problem with new Orange connections but it will be back for everybody in 2023. I can only apologise. Good luck with the house-hunt. Pat and Dave
La Cachette is a cozy holiday home, beautifully situated in the valley of the Sienne. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the beach, interesting cities such as Grandville, Avranches or Coutances and small, picturesque towns make your vacation very interesting and varied. Not forgetting the magnificent beaches and promenades of Normandy. Pat and Dave are outstanding, gracious and helpful hosts. Many thanks for your great hospitality! A hug for Freddie too, of course. Stay healthy. All the best.

Bless you Claudia for your lovely words. It is so nice that we helped you have a great holiday in Normandy. Your comments make it all worthwhile and we have now become good friends. Speak soon. Love from Pat, Dave and Freddie
Pat and Dave are very warm people who immediately make you feel welcome and at home. They are always there with advice or help when you need them, but also respect your privacy.
For us, the lovely gite gave us a peaceful and quiet home for a week. We were supposed to stay for 6 days but stayed a day longer because we loved it so much. And to be honest, we would have stayed for a month if we could. The gite is in a very remote and quiet area but there are a lot of things to see and do close-by. The best of both worlds. You can also do beautiful walks in the area. And when you come home Freddy, the dog and the surrounding cows give you a nice welcome.
We can only recommend this place and are very grateful for the warmth and care we received from Pat and Dave. We will go back for sure...

Beautiful, peaceful setting, set in it's own little suntrap.
Booking was really easy and Pat responded to our emails very promptly.
We didn't expect such fantastic weather at the beginning of April and were incredibly lucky to have sunshine for the full 3 weeks. We went for rest and relaxation and got it in spades and managed to fully recharge our batteries.
The cottage is clean and tidy and has everything we needed. It is comfortable in the sitting area and the bed is incredibly comfortable with very good quality bedding. I slept better than I have in years. There is plenty of storage in the bedroom and there was always lots of hot water.
There are many different kind of birds who came onto the patio to eat the food that the owners had placed there for them and it was lovely to watch them and to listen to them singing. The place is very quiet and surrounded by wild flowers and trees.
My partner fished in the nearby river and even caught a trout!
We were sad to leave and could have stayed the whole summer. If you've booked you will love it and if you're considering booking I would recommend that you go ahead and do so, you'll definitely not regret it.
I also recommend the Le Krill restaurant which is a few minutes walk away down the lane. Amazing food and drink at reasonable prices (some of the best we have ever had in France). We went on Friday lunchtime and it was very busy with local diners. I bet it's difficult to get a table in the height of the season.
The big supermarket on the way into Granville is the place to get excellent groceries and great wine.
For those that are wondering.....there is phone reception and the wifi works ok. Believe me though you'll want to put your phone onto silent!!
I also must mention the amazing night sky, there is no light pollution and the stars are fantastic, just mesmerising!
We would be very happy to go again, it's such a little tranquil oasis.

Peaceful place

Sehr nette Gastgeber
Wir haben uns rundum wohl gefühlt.
Die Kleinigkeiten zum Empfang (Käse, Butter, Milch, Brot Cidre)
Das Bett war etwas klein.
Herrliche Ruhe, trotzdem zentral gelegen.
Great area- peaceful-great owners- lots to see and do as long as you have a car- enjoyed the array of birds feeding on the fat balls supplied by the owners Pat and Dave.

About the host
Hosted by Patricia Hawkey
Dave and I are both from Surrey. We when I was 16 and Dave was 17. We have been married for 57 years. Both of us are from large families, I am the eldest of 5 and Dave was one of 5 boys. We have one daughter, two sons and 7 grandchildren ages from 11 to 33, A great grandchild joined the family October 2024. Never a day goes by that I have not spoken to one member of the family.
We lived at Tattenham Corner on Epsom Downs for 33 years until we moved to France. Our intention was always to move to Cornwall but this was not really feasible financially, so we had to rethink. It was either Spain or France, but as we already had an apartment in Spain we decided on France, mainly because it was so much easier for the family to visit. One car on the ferry with the family and dogs, instead of lots of flights and worrying about getting a dog sitter of paying kennel fees.
We travelled extensively before we moved to France, our favourite places being India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand to name a few. We still enjoy getting out and people say they do not know how we manage being always on the go, but, why not?
We love meeting new people and appreciate we are all different. Some like the peace and quiet of La Cachette and we do not disturb that. We are there if needed.
We have tried hard to make this a home from home, with everything you might need. We have 20 years of running La Cachette and take all comments and feedback to heart.
We do not advertise one price then add on lots of extra costs for linen and electric etc. The price is fully inclusive of gas, electric, Tourist Tax, and all bed linen is provided. We do have a cleaning fee, we just ask our guests to leave it as they find it. Just bring yourself and your bath towels.
I hope this gives you a bit of an insight to both of us and we look forward to welcoming everyone to our little bit of paradise. Hope to see you soon.
Why they chose this property
We viewed several properties over a week's visit, but on arriving at La Baleine we immediately fell in love with the area. The house and location reminded us very much of Fownhope, a village on the river Wye near Hereford where Dave's grandparents had lived. It was because of this that we named our house 'Fownhope'. On entering, we realised this was our dream home. I still cannot believe we live here. Our 3 bed semi turned into a 7 bedroomed house full of character with a cottage. This was the bonus, we never feel lonely as we meet people from all different countries and different walks of life so there is never a dull moment. The separate gite (La Cachette) was a bonus. It is on the other side of the lane from our main house and about fifty metres towards La Baleine.
What makes this property unique
Laval, the lane that runs between our house 'Fownhope' and our gite 'La Cachette' is part of a randonee - an official French rambling route. Very often, when walkers pass by, they stop outside our house, to take photographs, or simply to take in the stunning view. The comment we here most often is 'C'est magnifique', whether they are facing our house, or directly away from it, down towards the river. Guests staying in La Cachette frequently describe the area around it as 'a little piece of paradise'. Also we did not want to be too far from the sea, we love the beach and so does our dog Freddie. There is little more we can add.
