Traditional home in medieval part of this tranquil village, Pigna, Liguria.
About Ian Semple
We are an English family from the North East of England now living in Ireland. We love Italy and all things Italian. Before stumbling upon the is beautiful area and amazing village, we holidayed all over Italy. We always had the dream to own a property in Italy and started looking in 2007, It became apparent that flying to France, Nice, opened up the reality of regular easy flights from all over the UK and we visited this area for the first time. As soon as we drove into Pigna we were smitten! The villa is our second property in Pigna, we had a smaller apartment but in 2010 literally stumbled upon the house, and fell in love again with this new property, the character of the house, beautiful gardens and amazing views. We love this area , the people, the food . the history, the local customs.
Ian Semple purchased this Villa in 2011
Why Ian Semple chose Pigna
We are very passionate about this area and the village, for us its our paradise. We feel instantly relaxed when we arrive and start to slow down and live as Italians do, enjoying the beautiful things in life, the nearby rivers and rock pools, mountain walks, a hot frothy cappuccino in the local bar, piping hot wood fired oven pizza's, pasta's and wine. Everyone is so friendly and will offer help and advice without hesitation, we have made some great friends! This is the second property we've owned in the village and we feel very lucky to have found such a beautiful place. To ask why we love this area of Italy? the answer is, for us it provides the perfect mix of stunning landscapes contrasted by the exciting hustle and bustle of the coastline running from France along to Italy.
What makes this Villa unique
The villa is recently renovated and situated just within the medieval walls of Pingas old centre but with good access to nearby parking. We also now have Wifi. Idyllic gated private patio and garden including fruit trees, herb garden and vines with a large outdoor eating area including dining table and chairs and gas BBQ. Children can play safely between the lower and upper garden's as the villa's garden's are totally secure. Upstairs from the first garden level leads to the upper level of the house which has a large terrace (35sqm) complete with sun loungers and outdoor seating with stunning views of nearby village, Castel Vittorio

Summer in pigna
Spent 4 days here, the accomodation was charming and spacious and village beautiful. Bars, cafes and restaurants were fab. Highlight was the local rock pools. The beds could have been more comfy but we managed. Would def recommend and would stay here again as position both in village itself and surrounding areas is great.
Thanks for the review Lucinda. We are so glad you enjoyed the village and the house. Yes the rock pools are truly special and a great place to cool off in summer. We always try to ensure the house is as comfortable as possible for our guests.
Best wishes, Ian & Sue
Fabulous, airy house with wonderful views in a lovely village.
The house is in the heart of Pigna's lovely windy streets, with fabulous views down over Pigna and the villages beyond. The house has two lovely terrraces, with plenty of garden furniture, shade, sunshine and lovely views. The family house is well-equipped.
We enjoyed using the friendly local restaurants and corner shops, which serve tasty food and delicious ice cream.
Communication with the owner was very helpful.
We found travelling to the house by public transport very straight forward - there is a tram from Nice airport, which takes you (free of charge) just 2 stops to a shopping centre, and it is then just a 10 minutes walk to Nice St-Augustin train station. From there it takes just an hour to Ventimiglia, and then a 50 minute bus to Pigna.
The buses run every day, but you do have to plan their use carefully , as they do not run very frequently.
One of our favourite things to do was to walk to the natural rock pools near Pigna. The pictures on the owner's web site are lovely, but you really must experience this yourself to fully appreciate the charm of the location. The 15 minute walk to the river is delightful.
Thank you for the great review Helena.
Very pleased to hear you enjoyed the house and the village and your journey via public transport went smoothly.
You and your family are most welcome in Pigna anytime.
Best wishes, Ian & Sue
lovely spacious and comfortable house in interesting village
5 of us stayed here and enjoyed the local restaurants and bars of the village. We also had some lovely walks around the local area. We went back to the rock pools of Rochetta Nervina which were unchanged from 30 years ago when we swam in them before. As we only had 3 days here. we didn't manage to swim in the rock pools in Pigna. We will save that experience for our next trip. We would definitely stay at this house again. It was perfect.
Beautiful, medieval Pigna
Our family of four had a lovely week’s stay in Pigna. Our initial walk from where we left the car to unload round to the villa was breathtaking. Parts of the medieval village reminded me of Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, with tiny alleys leading off and wooden doors with lamps hanging over. The villa had everything we needed and the outside space was perfect for relaxing or eating in the sun. The village of Pigna is quiet and friendly and where you feel part of the community. The local coffee shop sells amazing coffee, patisserie and ice cream, from where you can watch many cyclists come and go. The ‘local’ waterfalls we walked to provided many hours of exploration and relaxation alike. We visited the local bar and played pool and spent lovely evenings in other restaurants nearby. The beach at Bordighera is a stony beach where you can hire sun loungers, but we were comfortable enough to lay on towels and mingle in with the many locals who came down late afternoon. The sea varied from calm and tranquil to vast, smashing waves - both as equally enjoyed although the life guards were diligent in keeping people safe. Visits to other villages to see Monet’s bridge, waterfalls and amazing views kept us all amused. Thanks to the comprehensive information we received prior to going and in the villa this helped us to make the most out of our week, although also leaves us feeling that we need to go back for more!
Beautiful villa in a beautiful town
The villa is amazing with picturesque views of the mountains. It was equipped with everything required for a relaxing stay. The gardens and sun area are an added bonus : we loved sitting out on an evening under the lights reading and chatting. Ian and Sue have thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable with a wide variety of books, DVDs and board games. Ian's information booklet helps you make the most of your stay with directions to rock pools, best places to eat nyoom other local information.
We have fallen in love with the villa and Pigna nyoom cannot wait to return next year.
We had an amazing stay in Pigna, met by a very helpful Georgia in the early hours of the morning.
Waking up in the morning the view from our bedroom window was breah taking, actually my wife cried!
The villa was spotless and had eveything that we needed, even a lovely bottle of red wine on arrival, thank you very much Ian & Sue.
What can i say, lovely people amazing food in the village and the rock pools were the star of the show and our teenagers kept saying everythin was "sic" lol.
Would definitely go back. x
Special interest holidays:

Pigna is located in the northern end of The Italian Riviera,in the region of Liguria 20 minutes drive or indeed bus to the sea.
Monaco is 40 minutes away, about 35 km.
The beautiful coast line of the Italian and French Riviera await. Seaside towns include, Ventimiliga, Bordighera, San Remo on the Italian side and of course Menton, Monaco, Monte Carlo and Nice on the French side of the border - all only up to an hour's drive away. Nearest beach is 20 minutes drive or 18km from Pigna village.
Pigna is 1 hour drive from Nice airport in the south of France. A hire car is recommended although airport pick up can be arranged and public transport, bus and trains are available. The public transport sytem is very good - trains link the coast making a hassle free trip to Monaco,Nice or San Remo a great adventure for the day. Pigna is in the nervia valley surrounded by mountains making it a special place with a combination of relaxing countryside, mountains and busy coastline.
Surrounded by many beautiful medieval villages - Apricale , Dolceaqua etc - village of sun only 8km away.swimming is 2km away or a brilliant pool 6km.
All have the villages have their own character and even signature dishes. .
It's a special place with a beautiful square with great restaurants, churches, museum etc.Lots og guests simply stay local as it is so tranquil
Other stunning villages include Rochetta Nervina, Isolabona both within 10 minutes drive of Pigna.
The food in this region is very special - Local restaurants include , La posta restaurant in Pigna. The owner is only open lunchtimes, has no menus and cooks the best anti pasti and pasta you will taste! And Sul Ponte, wood fired pizza and great wine. The restaurants in the region tend to have been in the same family for many years and are open all year round. They have to be the locals use them. We can recommend some great places in beautiful locations where the food will not disappoint including 4 within walking distance of the house. There 4 restaurants in the village , wood fired Pizza at the Sul Ponte is a great meeting place and lively spot. The old terme restaurant is a beautiful spot with a classic local menu.Within 10 minutes drive from the village there must be in excess of 20 restaurants including some tucked away special spots.
