About this property

Greenloaning, delightful Pet Friendly Cottage In the beautiful Scottish Borders

Greenloaning is a delightful traditional semi-detached cottage situated on the edge of the peaceful conservation village of Allanton. Comfortable and cosy, with a large enclosed garden and views over the surrounding countryside it has been completely renovated and is traditionally furnished to a good standard. It is very well equipped and offers full central heating as well a log burning stove. The cottage is perfectly located to enjoy all that the area has to offer including walking; golf; fishing; cycling; riding; the local historic houses and castles such as Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter), Bamburgh Castle on the beach, Floors Castle and Manderston with its silver staircase; the stunning coastline with the pretty harbour at St Abbs, and the lovely beach at Coldingham with its surfing facilities, as well as locally based quad biking, sailing, canoeing, and clay pigeon shooting etc. In the village itself, and a very short walk away, is one of the best local pubs/restaurants in the area serving real ales and wonderful food (and recently voted in the Times newspaper as one of the top 50 pubs for alfresco dining).

Wonderful Stay

We had a wonderful stay at Greenloaning. The cottage has everything you need (including a generous welcome pack), very clean and the bed is so comfortable…the bedrooms are like hotel rooms! It is also in a perfect location for visiting the surrounding area and not far from the many beautiful beaches. Our dogs loved the large secure garden and Lowry also provides dog bowls which is fantastic as I forgot to take ours! Would definitely recommend to anyone going to the Scottish Borders.

A Beautiful Retreat!

This is a lovely, stylish, tucked away cottage which is perfect for relaxing and as a base to explore both the Borders and the Northumberland coast. Perfectly equipped and lacking nothing! We loved the garden which made me feel like I was in a woodland glade! A lovely, relaxing place to stay with an excellent pub at the end of the road! Loved it.

Stunning Cottage

Stayed at this cottage between Christmas & new year instantly felt at home, the cottage had everything we needed & was comfortable & warm, all of the room are very well decorated & spotlessly clean, would stay here again & definitely recommend for a relaxing stay in the Scottish Borders. Also the welcome pack that Lowry left for us was very thoughtful & contained some great items, such a lovely touch thanks again.

Snug, cosy, light and airy, well-equipped, restful

Lovely, homely cottage in a very quiet location. Bliss! Immaculately clean, excellent facilities, plenty to watch/read/ browse through and the main bedroom is a huge dream of a room. Very useful welcome pack and extremely well-equipped place. Could have stayed much, much longer, especially the dog who adored the garden, and next doors also! Would definitely want to return but please fix the bathroom door which always required a hefty boot to close it. Otherwise, most certainly will recommend it. Thank you Lowrie.

Lovely cottage in a peaceful yet central location

Just returned from a wonderful holiday at Greenloaning. It is a lovely cottage that is full of character and very homely with everything you could possibly need. The garden is brilliant, very spacious, private and incredibly relaxing. There are lots of interesting places to visit locally such as the beautiful Coldingham Bay, St Abbs ( which had great crabbing!), Paxton House, Chain Bridge Honey Farm which has a great little cafe in an old double decker bus. Edinburgh is less than an hour away and the lovely seaside town of North Berwick is also worth a visit and of course Bamburgh and Holy Island are stunning. It was always a pleasure to return to the peacefulness of Greenloaning at the end of the day. Lowri was very helpful and the welcome hamper was much appreciated. Look forward to returning again.

Gorgeous, homely cottage.

My husband and I stayed in this lovely cottage of Lowri's for a week in June. We were over from New Zealand visiting family and were very unlucky with the weather during our stay, but felt very fortunate to be staying at this gorgeous warm cottage. As soon as we walked through the door it felt like home away from home, such a lovely welcoming feel. The cottage has a fantastic kitchen, with everything you could need for a couple or a family staying with simple things like plenty dishwashing liquid and washing powder, so we did not have to dash out and buy these basic provisions. The sitting room area is so homely, comfortable furniture to relax in by the warmth of the woodburner. The bed in the master bedroom was so comfortable and it was very handy having a toilet and washbasin linked to this room - again with the basic provisions provided of soap and toilet rolls. The cottage has a lovely big garden, so would be perfect for a family. We enjoyed the pub in Allanton within walking distance of the cottage - a great selection of gins! Allanton is well located in the Borders for driving to places such as Holy Island, Berwick Upon Tweed and Kelso. We will certainly be recommending your cottage Lowri to any friends that may be visiting the Borders from New Zealand and we would love to return sometime. Thank you!

Beautiful cottage in heart of the countryside

We absolutely loved Greenloaning. Tucked away and bordered by fields. The enclosed (huge) secure garden was heaven for our two little terriers who loved exploring all the nooks and crannies. The bed was so comfortable and we slept so well. Everything you needed was provided. Lowri left us a lovely welcome pack that was most appreciated after our long drive. Thank you so much!

Lovely cottage in the countryside

Greenloaning is a well kept cottage in the Scottish Boarders. We stayed for 10 days and it is in an ideal location to explore various towns, castles and beaches. The cottage has everything needed for a relaxing stay, including a generous welcome tray.

If you enjoy nature you will enjoy this

Gorgeous cottage with a huge enclosed garden that was safe for kids and dog to run around freely. Within 15 miles you hit gorgeous,Sandy beach that we were blessed with weather to visit every day. Many places to visit and would recommend Paxton House for the day as lovely walks and gardens. Will definitely visit again and can’t recommend enough. Due to covid owner had to replace washing machine with dishwasher. Not there fault, however we did miss the use of one when staying a week, with kids and beach visits, walks etc. This didn’t put us off however would probably stay for a shorter period in future if covid continues to cause issues for owners of residences where there is only room for one appliance. Totally recommend as the cottage is beautiful, homely and very clean.

Wonderful Cottage in beautiful area

The cottage is quiet, charming, warm and cosy and with wonderful fittings and furnishings. I have high standards and the sheets were glorious cotton, kitchen items were vastly superior to your usual ikea standard, hangers galore, everything to make you feel at home from home. Lowri provided us with a wonderful welcome pack and plenty of wood for the fire which was used daily as our weather was inclement. Allanton is a lovely small village surrounded by beautiful countryside, with a great pub and easy access to all attractions. We tried 3 of Lowri’s recommended restaurants and they were all excellent. Thank you Lowri for a really wonderful week!

Magical Cottage

We really enjoyed our stay at Greenloaning, it was very clean and very comfortable. Situated in a quiet little village with lovely walks around and a great little pub to visit each evening. Not far at all from the Northumberland coast and the beautiful beaches of the Scottish Boarders. The cottage was definitely home from home and had everything you needed to make your stay perfect. There was even a welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits, bread etc. We would definitely stay here again if we were back in the area, thanks very much Lowri.

About the host

I live locally, just outside of Eccles with my husband Peter and three children. We had a holiday cottage with our last home and I so enjoyed meeting the many guests we had and making the cottage as perfect for them as possible that when we moved house we decided to buy a holiday cottage. I love the fact that many of our guests become friends and visit again and again.

Why they chose this property

We loved Greenloaning as soon as we saw it despite the fact that it was pretty run down. We completely refurbished the cottage, new floors, new windows, complete plumbing, Central heating, electrics and we even discovered lovely stone original fireplace behind the moden brick one. It is now lovely and cosy with the log burning stove making it very snug. The garden has almost doubled in size since we cut back the overgrown shrubs. Perfect to relax and enjoy the sun and the many songbirds, as well as well as a perfect place for the children and dogs to let off steam. We even discovered an old well (made safe by a new wall surround and grill).

What makes this property unique

Allanton is a lovely village and perfectly located to enjoy all the Borders has to offer, whether it be the beaches, golf courses, or country homes and gardens etc. the village pub is fantastic and offers some of the best food and refreshments in the area. Despite being located off the middle of the village, Greenloaning is very peaceful and is edged by fields on one side. There is a small children's playpark along the lane and the children can go there safely without having to cross a road.
Fishing for salmon or sea trout is available close by on the Whiteadder Water through Bluestone Fishing.
