The town is noted for having some of the best quality restaurants in West Cork, serving a wide range of local artisan produce. There are numerous eateries, pubs/bars and the famous West Cork Hotel all within a few minutes walk from Riverview Apartment.
The area is also recognised as the ideal location for touring West Cork generally but in particular for its proximity (4.5) miles from Skibbereen) to Lough Hyne, Ireland's first Nature Reserve, a beautiful inland sea lake unique in Northern Europe where you can swim, kayak or go walking safely on the roads or the on forest paths to the top of Knockomagh from where you have spectacular views of West Cork coastline from Old Head of Kinsale to the Fastnet and beyond and to the Kerry mountains. Travel on to Baltimore (5 miles more) over narrow roads with spectacular views where you can eat and drink and enjoy this lovely fishing village or travel on the ferries to Sherkin and Cape Clear Island. The inexpensive ferries travel throughout the year. You can also join yacht hire groups and whale watcher trips from Baltimore or Union Hall port. Other really beautiful places to visit within a short driving distance of Skibbereen are Castletownshend and Union Hall where War of the Buttons were filmed, Glandore, Schull, Barley Cove & Crookhaven where scenes for "The Last Jedi" were filmed on the Brow Head. Travel a little further to Bantry Bay, Glengariff and on to Kenmare and Killarney which is less than two hour drive through spectacular scenery and mountain and coastal vistas.
