About this property

Sea View Traditional Villa in Crete

Ideal for those who wish to have peaceful vacation, swim every day in the sea and experience the hospitality of the Cretan people and the local traditions, with the added advantage of enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and the mountains, both during the day and each starry night. Villa Kapare is an ideal base from which you could explore Crete.
Villa Kapare stands on the edge of the hillside at the end of the traditional Cretan village of Kokkino Chorio, where the famous movie “Zorba the Greek” was filmed , on a quiet, enviable position, 40 meters only from a little square in the heart of the village. It was the main Cafenion (traditional coffee bar) of the village and without doubt its most captivating feature is the huge vine covered terrace on the seaward side with absolutely mesmerizing, panoramic view of the coastline below. There, in a bygone age, the old men of the village, sat looking out the Souda Bay, wondering when the next pirate ship might appear over the horizon!
The Villa was named ‘’Kapare’’ by the area where it stands, which was named Kapare because of the caper bushes (Capparis spinosa) that were growing thoroughly there in the past.
The villa is within walking distance of a one small but well-stocked store for food and supplies, both fresh and frozen, and two taverns (local restaurants) serving excellent Greek food at convenient prices. It is also just a short drive from nearby beaches. A small beach with clear blue water called “Koytalas” is only 2 minutes away by car and the main sandy beach of Almyrida is 5 minutes away. At Almyrida village there are also a variety of traditional tavernas, café bars and shops and some water sport facilities are offered, such as windsurfing, snorkelling and canoe.

As you enter in Villa Kapare high double gates open onto a vine covered patio and from here an entrance door leads to an airy ground floor living area, with stone floor, burning stove, and decorated touches of a cretan traditional village style. To one side a large breakfast counter with pine shelving separates the fully equipped kitchen (see amenities list). Against one wall is the large dining table and chairs and opposite here doubles doors lead out to the huge veranda covered by a vine arbour with panoramic view. Here a large patio table and chairs can offer a marvelous breakfast staring at the blue sea waters or a romantic dinner watching the captivating sunset.
On the other side of the living room there is a sitting area with a fitted sofa, plus chairs and a coffee table grouped around the warm fireplace. Beyond here seven stone-steps lead up to a small hallway with doors off, to a full bathroom with washing machine, plus an airy and spacious double bedroom with a window offering wonderful sea view. Off the hallway to the rear is a further bedroom with a double bed, a romantic mosquito-net and window overlooking the entrance courtyard below. This bedroom also has two single beds (one bed can easily turn to a sofa) into a sleeping gallery above and accessed by a small pine staircase. The sleeping gallery has its own little windows looking out over the rooftop towards the sea.

Beautiful traditional house with great view
Traditionally decorated house with two bedrooms, one bathroom and a large open living room - kitchen area. Large terrace with gorgeous views over the sea and neighboring hills. The house is located in a small village on the hills, ~15 min drive from closest beach in Almyrida. Very nice hosts that are extremely happy to help making the most of your stay with great advice and insider tips. We felt very welcomed during our stay in Villa Kapare and would return there. The only thing to be aware of is that the villa is a bit difficult to reach by car requiring driving through very narrow and steep streets. Also, there are a lot of cicadas living on the pergola plants which can be very loud during the day. Overall, this is an ideal place to have a quite vacation and ideally located to make excursions to the east (Rhetimno), South (Skafia) or West (Chania, Falassarna Beach).

Wonderful stay!!
My husband and I spent 11 days at Villa Kapare. Anthi and Mina both welcomed us. They had a folder filled with activities they suggested in the area and beyond, with maps and brochures. The house is absolutely lovely and there are not words to describe the view. We recommend this house wholeheartedly and will not hesitate to contact our hosts if we ever have the opportunity to go back to Crete. Thanks for a peaceful and wonderful stay, Anthi and Mina.

Hello! We are Anthi and Mina, two sisters that we love the bright sun and the blue sea of Crete. We always enjoy meeting with and talking to other people and we really look forward to the opportunity to host people from all around the world. This is the house in which we used to spend our summer vacations growing up. We really love to offer the opportunity to others to share the relaxed and peaceful outdoor living to be experienced in our home in Kokkino Chorio village, which our father, as an architect, and my mother as a lover of the traditional decoration, reconstructed it to the traditional house that we see today. As Greece is the country where hospitality was born, we are always ready to offer information and suggestions to other people and contribute to fill theirs holidays with unique experience and places that only the locals know well.

Why they chose this property

The Villa was names ‘’Kapare’’ by the area where it stands, which was named Kapare because of the caper bushes (Capparis spinosa) that were growing thoroughly there in the past.
