Detached spacious Isle of Lewis cottage in tranquil position with loch view
Three bed roomed detached house situated yards from the shore of Loch Carloway (Sea loch). Recently renovated, it is in the perfect position on the West Coast of the Island to visit such historical sites as the Callanish Standing Stones and the Carloway Broch. Also in the village are the world renowned Garenin Black Houses which give an indication as to how Islanders lived in days gone bye. There are two fantastic beaches (Dalmore and Dalbeg) within 5 minutes drive and some stunning inland and coastal walks accessible from the property. There are many trout lochs in the locality and Salmon fishing on the Carloway River (Permits available from Carloway Angling Club). Sea angling, beach fishing and pier fishing are also popular activities.
The property has recently been refurbished with a new kitchen, bathroom, new wooden flooring and carpets throughout. There are 2 double bedrooms, one with a double bed the other with two singles. A third bedroom has bunk beds ideally suited for children. A cot is also available.
There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available
Guest access
Guests will full access to all parts of the property with the exception of one locked cupboard in the bunk bedroom.
Interaction with guests
There will always be someone on hand to deal with any enquiries. A full list of things to do will be available in the house
Other things to note
When booking it is essential to check that if you are bringing a car that there is space on the ferry as in Summer they tend to be well booked.
There is no shop or petrol station in Carloway. The closest are either at Barvas or Cameron Terrace/Leurbost where you can get a good selection of food, wines and spirits and both have petrol/diesel. They also carry a diverse range of other goods – from midge repellent. There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available and fishing gear to surf equipment (Barvas). In Stornoway there are two supermarkets – Tesco near the ferry terminal and the Coop on the way out of town toward the west side.
The Doune Braes Hotel provides meals (best to book) and takeaway food. It has a bar and lounge. Forty North (Bragar) does the same but you need to pre-order takeaway and collect. Menus for both Doune Braes and Forty North are in the folder but may be subject to change.
There is of course a wide selection of restaurants in Stornoway - An Lanntair has a top class chef in Kenny Mackay and Digby Chick is recommended. Don’t go past Cameron’s fish and chip shop without sampling!
Getting around
A car is essential
Ferry: Most people travel to Lewis by sea using Caledonian McBrayne. They operate twice daily services from Ullapool to Stornoway, or alternatively they operate a shorter ferry crossing between Uig (Isle of Skye) and Tarbert (Harris). The Ferry fares are really competitive as opposed to flying and hiring a car.
Carloway is about 24 miles from Stornoway, and about 45 miles from Tarbert. Follow signs for Càrlabhagh (Carloway) on the A858. Remember to look out for the Gaelic name on road signs. When you reach Carloway you pass over the only flyover in the Western Isles and turn hard left heading for the pier signposted Cidhe Càrlabhagh. Follow the road to the right and it is the last house on the right with a distinctive red garage door
Flying: The only airport on the island is in Stornoway . Flybe operate daily flights to Stornoway from Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Eastern Airways operate flights, Monday to Friday, to Stornoway from Aberdeen.
Car Hire: There are a number of car hire companies including Stornoway car hire, Lewis Car Rental and Isle of Harris car hire.

Gorgeous traditional cottage with absolutely everything you need and lovely welcome gift of fresh eggs from Mairi who couldn't have been more helpful throughout our stay (arrived during storm Amy). Island was wet and windy but didn't stop us visiting everything, cottage was in an ideal location for so many things of interest and local shop nearby. Co-op in Stornoway was also the best one we've ever been to! We all had a brilliant time in a fab wee cottage.
We loved our stay here on Lewis. The house had everything you could need, the coziest kitchen, books and toys for the kids, beach towels, beach things, and the best part, the owners are so lovely and provided so much info on the area and their family history which made it really special. The house is in a beautiful spot and near to a very well stocked community supermarket.
A lovely, comfortable and well-equipped cottage at a beautiful location. Kenny and Mairi were very helpful. The community shop in Carloway was very convenient for groceries. Fantastic beaches are nearby and it is only a short drive to the Calanais Standing Stones. A great base to explore the Isle of Lewis.
Kenny and Mairi did everything they could to make us feel welcome in their cottage. Lovely welcome gifts on arrival and some great books on walks on the island as well as wildlife were very helpful. The cottage is well located for exploring Lewis and Harris with some great points of interest in the near vicinity. The double bed was very comfortable and the towels luxurious! They had thought of everything. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Lovely quiet, well maintained cottage. Warm and welcoming with everything we needed.

Absolutely beautiful area that the home is located in. So peaceful and quiet. There was a lot to see and do nearby, the locals were friendly, it was such a joy to be able to stay at this home and explore the island.
Very clean, perfectly appointed small cottage in quiet location. Close to the highway for access to elsewhere on the island. Hosts were very helpful and responsive, including leaving us a welcome snack. They had a binder full of local activities/recommendations. The kitchen had all the amenities you could wish for. Our stay was so peaceful,..
The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for a holiday on Lewis. The rooms are spacious, the community shop is near by, and there a many places to walk. It’s like home away from home and the perfect place to explore the isle of Lewis.
Short trip to experience the unique beauty of The Hebrides
Cosy , homely , beautiful lochside location . Walking distance to community shop ,art gallery, place of great historical interest , very close to stunning beaches , coastal walks . We loved it . This cottage had everything we needed and more.
The location is truly beautiful on the lochside and the house is clean, very well equipped and with a real feel of the home's history. Communication with our hosts was excellent from the moment we booked.

We had such an amazing time on the Isle of Lewis and renting this cottage greatly enhanced the experience. The family who owns this property were helpful, communicated promptly and the cottage itself was so comfortable and quaint. Added bonus, it seemed to be centrally located for what we wanted to do. I highly recommend renting this property!
Kenny and Mairi were fantastic at communicating and making sure we found Lithir with perfect directions. The home was better than we imagined and the children loved all the hidden gems of toys, games, puzzles, maps, books and more. The views were beautiful and the house so cosy. We wish we could have stayed longer.

The cottage is perfectly situated for hiking and close to some of the best local attrations. The nearby store has everything you need and more allowing for easy grocery shopping. The home itself is spacious and comfortable with a very well equipped and modern kitchen and cozy living room. The views from the cottage are stunning. A wonderful visit.
There was nothing missing appointment-wise at Lithir and the setting is just right for exploring all that the Isles of Lewis and Harris have to offer! Communication was timely and smooth and the hosts couldn't have been more helpful and informative. Thank you, Mairi & Kenny for opening your family home!
We came in late but had a very warm and nice welcom and good and helpful contact with the owner. The house was complete with everything you need, and for the first evening and morning there also was some food present.
We had a stay of only 3 nights, but would have liked to stay longer. Hope to come back in future.
The location of the cottage in Carloway is great for exploring the island of Lewis, it’s archeological sites, many walks and hikes. There is a well stocked shop in town for anything you need. The house is cozy and peaceful looking out on the loch in front. The kitchen has good supplies for cooking. It is the perfect place for rest and renewal in the beauty of the western isles, and also as a base for outdoor activities.
What's not to like? A very comfortable cottage by the side of the loch in Carloway, We were all very comfortable and spoiled by the well-equipped kitchen, ideal for self-catering. Plenty of instruction books for those not familiar with induction hobs, lots of reading material about the locale, nice to have the well-stocked community shop nearby. A wonderful place to stay as a base for Lewis and Harris. Thank you!
My mother and I had a wonderful stay at the cottage. So quiet and peaceful with the cottage provided with everything you need to make life comfortable. After we left we realised my mother had left behind her hearing aids. We contacted Mairi who posted them that day. They arrived home before my mother!! Thanks for a wonderful visit.
We had regular contact with Mairi so we knew if we needed anything she'd be there, but this little cottage was so well equiped there was nothing we could want. Lithir is set in a beautiful valley overlooking the water. You can watch as the tide comes and goes and see the various wildlife that comes and goes with it. Ideal for exploring both Lewis and Harris and not far from Stornoway for fuel and groceries. Just a lovely little cottage.
