REVIEWS: "A Gem!" I rented this twice, At New Year's and in March 2017. I have rented before at Grand Bear and this is by far the nicest unit we have seen. Unlike those booked through the resort, this is stocked with supplies and amenities you would hope for in a luxury unit! More than you can ask for. Owner has extra air beds, luxury towels, kitchen extras, even cozy throws! It feels more like home than a rental. Owner is absolutely wonderful. You won't be disappointed! - 5 of 5 stars Reviewed for a stay in March 2017
“Great people space! Room for 10-12 comfortably” This condo is the best we've used at grand bear. Very spacious and comfortable. Will definitely rent there again! - 5 of 5 stars Reviewed for a stay in November 2016
“Great place to stay for a beautiful fall weekend” This cabin is a great place to stay. We all came in for a class reunion in October. The size of the cabin was perfect for all of us .....enough beds and bathrooms. Lori (the owner) was so easy to work - 5 of 5 stars Reviewed ago for a stay in October 2016

Great!
This house was very clean and very well stocked with all we needed-lots of kitchenware, towels, comfortable beds, etc. The owner was very helpful and responsive. This area offers a lot of outdoor activities and great restaurants too. We would recommend it highly.
Lori was an excellent hostess. She was very helpful and easy to communicate with. The property was neat and clean. The kitchen was fully supplied. Plenty of nightlights a plus.

Clean, spacious and well equipped!
This property was the perfect choice for our board retreat! It easily accommodated 5 adults and provided everyone with plenty of space. The sitting areas - including the outside deck - were great to be able to move around and remain comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped, and overall the cabin contained everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. As an added bonus, the area is beautiful, and the owner stopped by to personally welcome our group and drop off a bottle of local wine - great personal touch! We'll definitely be back!

So disappointing...not how we expected to be treated
We stayed here over Thanksgiving for 3 nights. Good space, well appointed kitchen and Lori was accommodating prior to our stay. We awoke on Friday after Thanksgiving to no hot water. We contacted Lori and she scheduled a plumber. We waited until he arrived around 3:30pm on Friday, which affected our family plans for the afternoon. After conducting some diagnostics, the plumber said that we as guests did not cause the outage especially with the extremely high winds in the area causing power surges. He could not get the parts until Monday so we were there until the following day so had no hot water for two consecutive mornings.
Lori was quick to respond with the plumber ETA but never offered any reimbursement for our lack of hot water for showers, Jacuzzis, dishes and other uses during this time. No offer of an alternative place to shower or a sincere apology for the inconvenience.
We checked out on Saturday but agreed it was inappropriate to pay that amount of money and not have hot water during part of our stay. We emailed Lori, expressed our disappointment and asked what she could do. She reluctantly asked us what we thought would be fair. When we responded back with what seemed to be a fair and reasonable expectation to get reimbursed for one of the nights (based on input and feedback we read on the HomeAway owners forum), she refused saying we were being unreasonable and unfair. She said we could’ve easily made warm baths by boiling water (for 9 people). From that point on, the tone and content of her communications were mean spirited and accusatory. She even indicated that it was our fault that the hot water heater had failed, intended to withhold our damage deposit (which fortunately we did recover), and later followed up with another email accusing us of replacing a folding banquet table in the unit with one that was in worse condition (which we had not).
Our review primarily reflects the second half of our visit and the treatment we received from Lori when she had to deal with a problem in her unit, that we did not cause, but it certainly affected our stay. The true test of a good owner and the rental experience is how they treat their guest and react when problems arise, not just when they are chasing a booking. An owner should be accountable to their guest at all times and should recognize that sometimes a make-good is indeed due. Hope you have a lovely, problem-free stay if you do rent here; unfortunately that was not our experience,
We had a large group- several families and a few kids come together from different areas. The cabin had everything you could possibly need and then some. The owner, Lori, was absolutely amazing. I cannot even express the gratitude we all gave for Lori for providing the perfect space. The long weekend was to spend time with our dear friend who has stage 4 cancer. We want to make as many memories and spend as much time as possible while we still have her.
After arriving home on Memorial day, and relaxing after the long drive, we heard the devastating news that the cabin we stayed at fell victim to a fire that started several cabins away. Due to high winds, it spread quickly. We are all incredibly sad and feel such a deep loss for Lori and the cabin that will forever be in our memories.. Sending so many hugs and prayers to all involved. Lori, you are amazing and I hope you can and will rebuild. 😢🙏❤️
Lori is so kind and accommodating! She answers any questions you have regarding the property very quickly! The property is so immaculately maintained! I just wish that the area has more activities to offer so we could stay longer. We totally recommend everyone to try and rent the place. A great getaway for friends and family! Definitely coming back!

Thank you and your family for visiting . i am not happy unless my guests are happy . it’s important to me that you enjoy and have a wonderful experience. i hope you can come back . God bless, Lori
Our only complaint is not knowing we weren’t eligible to swim at the Grand Bear Lodge! We found out the hard way that booking through VRBO means the rest is off limits! But the home was great and we really enjoyed our stay!

guest told me she was allowed in the waterpark .
i have on my listing to call first to see if they are open and allow guests staying outside of the lodge permission to swim. The water park changed ownership, had a fire, and closed during covid . Their policy changed numerous times . please call them first before booking. Thank you, Lori
We had a group of friends and family use this cabin to celebrate a couple birthdays in the month on February. The cabin was good enough but it was left very unclean. Boxes of decorations were left out in the hallway. A ton of glitter covered the couch and floor in the living room. We found old food in the couch when we use the pull out bed. Then after our stay we were blamed for breaking a TV that we never used. We talked with the owner of this cabin and they were rude to my friends and judged our character. We never used or touched that TV and we were charged $500 to replace it. I have put in a claim to VRBO to try and get my money back because that is ridiculous. Be careful booking this place. Dirty and could scam you out of money!
Seven senior ladies looking for a 2 night getaway. We could not have made a better choice.
Lovely cabin in a lovely setting. Plenty of room and a well equiped kitchen.
Host, Lori was great to work with. Thanks again for the use of your cozy cabin!
My family and I stayed in celebration of birthdays in January . As soon as we walked in we were happy. The place was warm and cozy. We had such a good time . So many things to do right around the area. Trails , eagles, a cool lodge and then we played games that were compliment from the owner. We had so much room so everyone could be together. And the antique pool table was definitely a treat. Thanks Lori

Great Hiking
Great proximity to hiking on grounds as well as nearby. Beautiful sunsets. Bed super comfortable. Host very generous.
The cabin was exactly as listed and exactly what we wanted for a couple nights to getaway during Christmas with our adult children. Great design and very spacious. We loved the Christmas decorations, lights, and trees throughout the entire cabin. The host was very responsive. Would definitely stay again.
The cabin was wonderful. Full kitchen with EVERYTHING we needed. Easy access to Starved Rock State Park as well as plenty to do in Utica, LaSalle and Peru!!

Thank you soo much . You were wonderful guests as well ! I hope to see you again:) Lori
I will admit that I was a little afraid the pictures looked a little too perfect for the price but everything was exactly as pictured. There was more than enough space for 9 of us (4 adults and 5 children) and Lori even had a Christmas tree in every room!

Thanks so much.. you were wonderful guests and I would be honored to host you again . Have a happy, healthy New Year:. Lori
First off, Lori was not only SUPER attentive but sweet as can be. She went above and beyond to make sure our "girls 50th birthday celebration" was perfect. How she personalized our trip and responded immediately to questions we had was top notch. The property was absolutely amazing, better than we could have imagined, and I am really hard to impress. The property had EVERYTHING we could have wanted and needed. Most properties I have stayed at in the past supply nothing!! But Lori had every staple and necessity needed for our stay. Clean is an understatement, spotless is more accurate. A huge bonus which regular VRBO renters will understand "no huge TO DO list at check out". I have stayed at properties where I had to start check out chores the night before because of the extensive list, cutting into my "vacation", Lori simply asks for the towels to be brought to the laundry room and garbage dumped. THAT'S IT!! We are planning our next trip in April 2022 but will be making it a longer stay. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing home with us Lori. You helped create Great memories!
Everything was great. Awesome accommodations. We had a great time. The pool table is a plus. And we were able to get to hiking trails right from the cabin, no driving required another plus. Highly recommended.
