About this property

Ancient Norman half-timbered fromagerie and stable, comfortably modernised..

Nestled in the heart of the Pays d'Auge in Calvados, the old fromagerie is now available as a self-contained gîte. Le Petit Orchard provides all the modern comforts for those wishing to explore this beautiful region. The traditional colombage construction has been retained where possible and replaced with seasoned oak timbers where it was necessary.

Inside there is a light and airy lounge with a fully fitted kitchen on the ground floor and door to the terrace; a double bedroom with separate door to the grounds; a bathroom with double sink, walk-in shower and washing machine; and a separate WC with hand basin. The first floor comprises a second bedroom with twin beds. This bedroom can take further single bed for a 7th person (£15 per night) or a childs bed (£10 per night); There is also a bathroom with washbasin, bath/shower and WC.; and a large open area (which can be screened off) provides 2 further single beds. Immediately outside is a terrace with barbecue, table and chairs, parking for 2/3 cars and views onto the village.

The grounds are 2 hectares of fields, pathways, fruit trees and a small stream. You share the grounds with us in L'Orchard but you retain your complete privacy and the access drive is only for Le Petit Orchard.

The village of Bonneville la Louvet, in the valley of the Calonne river is only 250 metres away and has a bakery; restaurant and a beautiful 13thC church. Deauville and Honfleur are both about 30 miutes away; the D-Day beaches and Etretat about 1 hour. In fact we are perfectly placed to explore all of the diverse beaches and cliffs that Normandy has to offer. Further afield is Bayeux - with its' cathedral and of course, the tapestry, and in the other direction, historic Rouen. The ancient cobbled streets will lead you around the old markets and some fascinating little shops.

When you arrive, you will find a welcome basket in the kitchen to stave off any immediate hunger pangs, and of course, we can be contacted easily if you need information on the region or other assistance of any sort. We have a variety of guides and suggestions for things to do, only some of which are in the gîte.

Accueil excellent

About the host

Host profile image
Retired Marine engineer and consultant. Born and raised in Kent.
I travelled extensively in my working life and on my yacht. My French wife, Brigitte, an ex-Air France security consultant, was also a boater and our paths (courses?) crossed 14 years ago in the south of France. We now live here in Normandy enjoying all it has to offer, and sharing it with our guests.

Why they chose this property

We found this period house and the gîte after a lot of searching, not only in Normandy. (We investigated a lot of France!) It has atmosphere, all-round terrain; and a super view of the village. The whole land slopes gently towards the south so has all-day sunshine too.

What makes this property unique

The original colombage on the house that we retained has some unique styling above the entrance door.
