City of Cavallino
In the continuity of a story that never stops, Cavallino, an ancient messapic center, is the metaphor of a civilization that has its roots in the dawn of history. The pre-Roman age is also testified by the remains of megalithic walls and tombs dating back to the IV-II centuries BC. C. After the Longobard occupation, it assumed the name of Cavallino and belonged to the county of Lecce. The Casale, which belonged to the De Noha family in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, was then the Castromediano family. The etymological origin of the name is still uncertain, but certain is the existence of the Casale cavallinese since the time when the Basilians exercised the religious mission. Most of the finds from the Cavallino excavations are kept in Lecce in the Provincial Museum "Sigismondo Castromediano" and can be dated mostly from the 8th to the 6th century BC. C., the heyday of the Cavallinese settlement. A few artifacts, however, date back to the centuries following the IV, which led to suppose that the messapic settlement was abandoned following the clashes with the Tarantini. Protector of Cavallino is Saint Dominic of Guzman, the Saint beloved by Beatrice Acquaviva d'Aragona, wife of the Marquis Francesco Castromediano. Among the main monuments must be mentioned the Museo Diffuso, the Palazzo Ducale, the Pozzo and the statue of S. Domenico, the Mother Church (where the splendid funeral monument of Beatrice Acquaviva d'Aragona and of the Franciscan Castromediano is kept), the Chapel and Convent of the Dominicans, Porta S. Giorgio or Porta Nuova. The town was the birthplace of the great patriot archaeologist Duke Sigismondo Castomediano (1881-1895) and the poet Giuseppe De Dominicis (1869 - 1905). Cavallino with decree of the President of the Republic of 2/3/2006, can boast the title of City. with the decree of the President of the Region of the same year it was also recognized as a City of Culture and Art.
