About Smithy Cottage
Smithy Cottage is a charming end-terrace, traditional cottage situated at the heart of a Cornish farming village, adjacent to a gentle stream. It is close to Falmouth on the south coast (15 mins) and Hayle on the north coast (30 mins). With excellent public transport links parking the car, for the duration of your stay, is an option. Smithy Cottage was originally the village blacksmith’s workshop and ideally provides accommodation for 4 adults with flexibility for a further 2 guests. The cottage is light and airy with original large sash windows to the front and has been designed to create a relaxed and tranquil feel - a perfect place to unwind.
From the pretty entrance hall there is a cosy lounge on the right, decorated in a boutique style complete with a log burner, TV and comfortable seating, offering a great place to relax in.
Situated to the left of the entrance hall there is a well-equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, single oven and grill, microwave, large fridge freezer and a kitchen table which easily seats 4. From the kitchen, a stable door leads into a sun room with comfortable chairs overlooking the rear courtyard. There is a downstairs utility room equipped with a toilet, wash basin and washing machine.
Next to the sun room there is a large bedroom. This bedroom has a double bed, bedside tables, free standing wardrobe, comfortable chair and chest of drawers. There is a large ensuite bathroom which is also suitable for guests with restricted mobility including manual wheelchair-users. Large patio doors lead out from this bedroom into the outside courtyard making it a spacious and peaceful room.
Upstairs, there are two bedrooms. One large with a fitted wardrobe, double bed, bedside tables and plenty of drawer space and one flexible bedroom which can be arranged as a double or two singles plus a spacious walk-in wardrobe. Both bedrooms are decorated to a high standard with relaxation in mind. A modern bathroom with a bath /shower, washbasin and toilet completes the upstairs facilities.
Outside there is a sunny front garden laid to lawn with pretty flower borders; the ‘sun trap’ courtyard at the rear offers a private seating area. This patio is perfect for outside dining, coffee, or an evening aperitif. An outdoor table and chairs, for up to 6 people, is available all year.
There is full gas central heating throughout the property and hot water as required.
All linen and towels are provided (sorry no beach towels).
There is a private free parking space for one car at the front of the property.
Pedestrian access is available at the rear of the property providing level access to the downstairs bedroom. There is a small ramp into this bedroom for those guests using a manual wheelchair or who have limited mobility. We regret, no pets.

About the village
The village of Perranwell Station is a traditional Cornish farming village. It is close by the romantic and sleepy creeks and inlets of the Fal River as well as being only 20 minutes’ drive from the more dramatic scenery of the north Cornwall coast. The lively and bustling holiday town of Falmouth is only 6 miles away (15 minutes by car) whilst the high-street shops and amenities of the cathedral city of Truro are only 5 miles away (12 minutes by car). There is an open-air market all year round in Truro on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a market on ‘The Moor’ at Falmouth on Thursdays and Saturdays (December to March).
The village is home to the famous CAMRA - listed Royal Oak pub which is frequented by locals and visitors alike, it is only a few minutes’ walk away. Dining at ‘The Oak’ is a must with its genuinely friendly and professional staff and its carefully chosen a la carte menu and daily specials board. Booking is essential.
The Norway Inn is also within walking distance (about 20 minutes) along a footpath next to the shop, over a couple of stiles, past our ancient village church and then down into the hamlet of Perranarworthal; a really pleasant and quiet walk. There is a restaurant serving food every day and a carvery (on certain days).
Our village post office and stores are a stone’s throw from Smithy Cottage and have everything for your everyday needs.
Perranwell Station has its own railway station which is a 10-minute walk from Smithy Cottage. It provides a frequent and inexpensive service between Truro and Falmouth and stations beyond. Cornwall boasts a number of thriving and scenic branch lines (e.g. the famous line from St Erth to St Ives acknowledged as one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the UK) and they are all within easy travelling distance from Perranwell railway station.
Designated areas of outstanding natural beauty are within easy reach from Smithy Cottage including the stunning Helford River (10 miles; 30 minutes by car) and the Roseland Peninsula (13 miles; 26 minutes by car using the famous King Harry car ferry).
Garden lovers will be delighted with the National Trust house and garden at Trelissick, a mere 5 miles away (10 mins by road). Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens are only 8 miles away.
For walkers, there are plenty of walks from the front door of the cottage and you are never far away from the beautiful south west coastal path. Cyclists have easy access to mile upon mile of cycleways and former tramways including the coast to coast path (Devoran to Portreath). There is cycle hire available 2 miles away from the Bike Chain, Bissoe.
There is so much to see and do from Smithy Cottage, you will be spoilt for choice.
*SMITHY COTTAGE INFORMATION FOR GUESTS WITH REDUCED MOBILITY
When we designed Smithy Cottage as a holiday home, it was important for us to create an easily accessible bedroom with an ensuite suitable for people with reduced mobility, including manual wheelchair users. We hope that you will find the following information helpful.
It is essential that you read this information if you wish to use this facility and that you contact us before booking if you have any additional queries as our aim is for you to have an enjoyable stay. Please note that we cannot accept responsibility for any access difficulties encountered during your stay due to individual mobility needs which were not discussed with us prior to making a booking.
Access to Smithy Cottage
There is a private parking space for one vehicle at the front of the cottage. This space is large enough for an adapted SUV-type vehicle (e.g. one with a wheelchair ramp).
At the right-hand side of the cottage, there is level pedestrian access which leads to a pretty rear courtyard via a garden gate. The gate is approached by a small, short, and low concrete ramp. The gate is 80 cms wide which is enough for most manual wheelchairs but please check that all dimensions specified in this additional information are suitable for you prior to booking.
Please note that the entrance/exit for manual wheelchair users is only via the rear courtyard as there is limited turning space behind the front door.
The private courtyard contains plants and seating and is very much a sun-trap for most of the day.
From this level courtyard, there is a short, low, non-slip metal ramp leading to double patio entrance/exit doors directly into the ground floor bedroom/ensuite. There is movement-activated security lighting adjacent to the patio doors for guests arriving during darkness.
For guests who do not require the rear, ramped access, the entrance/exit is via the front door. There is a low-level step (4cms high) and the front door threshold is 18 cms above this step. The ground floor of the cottage is all level except for internal access into the ground floor bedroom and a small sill (2 cms) under the kitchen stable-door.
Ground floor bedroom with ensuite
This relaxing room provides a great facility for guests with reduced mobility who require an easy entrance and exit to and from the property.
It has been carefully designed without giving the appearance that it has been specially adapted.
It contains a double bed, seating, a lower level wardrobe and a large, modern ensuite with carefully positioned grab rails on the left and right hand side providing easy access into a shower area.
There is a free-standing shower seat and an adjustable-height shower head. The height of the shower seat can also be varied. The shower tray is 3 cms high and measures 1.2m by 1.2m. It is possible to position a wheelchair directly in front of the shower tray and to transfer from there to the shower seat using the grab rails provided. It is not permitted to attempt to propel or place a wheelchair directly into the shower tray. This facility is therefore suitable for a wheelchair user who can transfer from their wheelchair to the shower chair. There is a grab rail adjacent to the WC. The WC is 48 cms high.
Access from this bedroom into the main part of the cottage is via two internal steps leading to the sun-room. The top step is only 14cms high and the lower step is 18 cms high. Portable ramps for these steps are available at no extra cost but need to be requested in advance at the time of booking. Responsibility for safely positioning the ramps lies with the guest(s) themselves as everyone’s needs are different.
A stable door from the sun-room leads into the cottage kitchen/dining room and, from there, into the lounge area. The stable door is 70 cms wide and has a 2 cm high threshold. The remainder of the ground-floor is level access.
Please note that the internal dimensions of the downstairs bedroom and the ground floor of the cottage are, with regret, not suitable for guests using electric wheelchairs,
