About this property
La Maison Blanche in the countryside with large private garden, terrace and pool
La Maison Blanche .
A pretty house, for up to six people, situated in the peaceful Provencal countryside near to the hamlet of La Galine, at the foot of the Alpilles and just 3 km from the vibrant and fashionable town of St. Remy de Provence with all its lively restaurants, shops and amenities.
Set in 2,500 square metres of garden with swimming pool, all for your use only, the property is a fully furnished detached house with a large living/dining room (approx. 30 square metres), stone-fireplace with wood-burning fire, exposed beams, and french-windows leading out onto the front and rear gardens.
The house sleeps six people in three bedrooms, has a modern fully equipped kitchen with veranda.
The private gardens to the front and rear, with views out across the fields, have a terrace, lawn and orchard. Close to the terrace there is a swimming pool ( 8m x 3.5m and 1.2m deep). There is an area suitable for playing "boules" (which should be found in the hall cupboard ) .
The Provence region
Ideally situated for exploring the region of Provence, with the fortified papal city of Avignon just twenty minutes to the north; Arles and the natural wilderness of the Camargue to the south-west, Marseille and the beauty of the Calanques to the south-east and the spectacular valley of the Luberon where Peter Mayle lived and wrote his famous novel “A Year in Provence”, and the films "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources" were shot, to the east.
Also close by is the magnificent village of Les Baux de Provence perched up in the Alpilles, the fashionable town of Aix en Provence, the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard dating back to the first century AD and (for the antiques-hunters!) the town of Isle sur la Sorgue, famous for its 300+ antique shops and weekly fairs.
And it is, of course, perfect for simply relaxing, enjoying the sunshine and sampling the wonderful Provencal food and wines.
Saint-Remy-de-Provence
The house is set at the foot of the Alpilles, a range of sharp peaked hills surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields and fruit trees, and just three kilometres from St. Rémy, one of the "must-sees" in Provence. Amongst St. Remy's ancient winding streets you will discover beautifully restored old houses, fantastic old fountains, shady squares, elegant boutiques and restaurants to suit all. There is a superb market in the centre of town every Wednesday morning and local festivities (“fetes”) take place in and around the town throughout the year, but particularly during the summer months.
It is an historic town built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. You can roam amongst the Roman remains of "Glanum" which was founded in the 3rd century BC, and visit the "grands Thermes", the Triumphal Arch, the Temple and the Mausoleum of a true gallo-roman city.
The beauty of the countryside and the quality of light have inspired many artists, writers and painters over the centuries. Without a doubt, the most famous being Vincent Van Gogh who produced more than 150 paintings of the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence. It is also the birthplace of Nostradamus.
The area also offers a wide range of activities including golf (courses in nearby Les Baux de Provence, Avignon, Mouries, Mallemort and Nimes), gliding (5-minutes drive from the house at Romanin), horse riding (closest centre in St. Remy), hiking, cycling, canoeing, hot air ballooning and climbing.
