I'm back at work but my thoughts and heart are still in Castello, where we just enjoyed a relaxing and special week's holiday. The apartment is spacious and combines modern comforts, such as air conditioning and a large, comfy bed, with lots of history and a romantic position overlooking the bustling square. We enjoyed exploring Istria in 35C heat, retreating to Castello in the evening to drink wine on the roof terrace or stroll the streets of Vodjnan. The beach was a little too far to pedal, for us, largely just due to the heat, but there are plenty of magical spots within a 30-minute drive, plus the towns of Pula and Rovinj to enjoy. This was my fourth trip to Croatia and although we went in peak season I also found the area to be surprisingly good value compared to Dubrovnik for example, with food, drink, parking and other essentials always cheaper than expected. The apartment also felt like good value, with spacious rooms and such a prime location, without a premium price tag.

I am sure you enjoyed the italian flavour, not only of the food but also the architecture which stems from this part of Croatia once being part of Italy. If you know some italian, the Croatians, who are bilingual, will happily respond to your efforts. You can also speak English as all the young speak good English and some of the older ones too.
I hope you will return to Castello. We offer 10% discount to our guests who would like to book one of our apartments again. We have Castello and Benussi in Vodnjan and Lukovima in Rovinj.

Costello is a lovely apartment; clean and spacious with a well stocked kitchen. The A/C made for a restful nights sleep and generally made our holiday more comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed drinking wine on the roof terrace and pondering Vodnjan's age old history - absolutely beautiful views. Vodnjan is perfectly situated to explore Istria by bicycle, bike or car. We hired a car so managed to get further afield and visit Rovinj, Pula, Medulin and Permentura to name a few places, but Fezana is a short cycle away and Vodnjan is steeped in history - including mummified Saints resting in the local church. We particularly enjoyed the Bist (Olive Oil local shop) tour of the owner's (Paul O'Grady - yup; Irish) beautuful Olive Grove. We now truly understand olives and olive oil. We feel like we've discovered an unspoilt, non-commercialised peace of heaven and Castello is definitely a place we shall revisit. Hvala! Amanda & Jon.

I am so pleased you and Jon enjoyed staying at Castello and appreciated Vodnjan and its unspoilt character. The locals are friendly and helpful in a relaxed way. There is no feeling of being a tourist target as happens in so many places these days. After 10 years of visiting several times a year, I still enjoy it- even in the winter with the wood stove burning.
I look forward to hearing from you again when you plan your next visit.

Perfect base for exploring Istria....
The property met our needs perfectly as a base for a two week exploration of Istria, somewhere we knew little about beforehand. Its position overlooking the main square gave us a good chance to 'get under the skin' of a small Istrian town where locals were in the majority. A hire car, though, also allowed us to visit the many and varied coastal and inland attractions that Istria boasts - and several, including early Fazana and Rovinj, we liked so much that we made multiple visits.
Vodnjan itself has a relatively small number of restaurants and bars but there is definitely enough to keep you going when not doing 'road trips'.
The Vodnjanka restaurant was definitely the best option, although booking is advised.
We were lucky enough to be have our holiday coincide with several events and festivals in the town plus a few (free) concerts in small buildings or the 'open air cinema'.
Your first port of call should be the Touring Info office (also on the main square) - they were very helpful in explaining what was coming up in and around the town.

Vodnjan, as you mentioned, is a town where the locals are in the majority. This makes it a lovely place to visit all year round because it is an active small town. There are of course extra activities as you mentioned in the summer. I look forward to welcoming you again and to offer you our 'returning guest' discount.

Great accommodation, atmospheric location
We have loved our stay at Castello, it's been a great base for exploring the nearby towns and coastline.
We loved Bale, especially the Kamene Price jazz bar and exploring the streets of Vodnjan itself. A trip to Chiavalon olive oil producers and Stancia Buršić (local ham producer and restaurant) are worth a mention, we were welcomed warmly at both.
We were without a car but we were able to take a day boat trip up the coast to Lim Ford, Vrsar and Rovinj which was lovely.
Über has been a bit of a lifeline here - it's about a 1/3 of the price of a normal taxi and as such, we were only too happy to tip the drivers.
On a more earthly note, it was great to have a washing machine on the premises and we really enjoyed the roof terrace. It's been lovely talking to people, tourists and locals and we've loved being here. Having spoken to lots of friends and colleagues at home, Croatia is becoming more and more a destination of choice. I'd come again before the whole world hears about it.
Thank you Tessa.
Best wishes Miriam and Abby

Thank you for writing a review of your stay at Castello. We first came to Vodnjan over 15 years ago and fell in love with its authenticity away from the crowds. We soon had a opportunity to buy the apartment looking on to the square. We divided it into two. Next time you should come with family or friends and stay in Benussi (68166 on HomeAway)

Ferien pur.

Fantastic apartment and village to come home to.
We loved our stay at apartment Castello and Vodnjan is a great village away from the tourist trail but close enough to be able to enjoy all the sights and return to the very comfortable apartment. Small supermarket nearby for all our needs and local restaurants with great food. Central location to all the sights, mountain top villages and the wonderful seafront towns.
Would highly recommend this highly.

Beautifully restored flat in a fabulous building
We enjoyed every minute of our stay in Vodnjan, an authentic medieval town which seems largely untouched by tourism; just how we like it.
Castello is a sympathetically restored apartment which overlooks the Square from the bedroom and the church tower from the living area. It has a spacious feel and is very comfortable. Our stay was in October which meant that the (very efficient) heating units were welcome. We only needed them at night though as the days were pleasant. It felt special to enter the building through the communal entrance and the stone hallway and spiral stairs evoked centuries past. Castello is welcoming with its wooden floors and neutral colour scheme. Everything you need is there and we enjoyed several meals at home, overlooking the tower and even a picnic on the roof terrace, with its wonderful views. The roof terrace is accessed via the attic, which was another highlight for me. The keyholders were welcoming on our arrival and helped us with where to park and to eat that night. The flat is beautifully clean (I understand that the caretakers live in another apartment in the building) and everyone we met in the building was friendly, even greeting us if they saw us in local bars. Tessa, the owner of the flat, provided excellent communication and made the whole thing very easy.
The apartment was very easy to reach from Pula airport and as we'd hired a car, we could go anywhere in Istria that took our fancy. The motorways have tolls but these are cheap by UK standards and are practically empty, as are the main roads. We enjoyed the sightseeing around the hill towns and the coast and returned to Pula to see the amphitheatre but mostly enjoyed the hospitality around Vodnjan. I would recommend visiting the tourist office for advice about what to see, especially if you're going slightly out of season as we did.
This was our first visit to Croatia and we look forward to going again for the beautiful scenery, friendly locals and authentic, unpretentious atmosphere. If we return to Vodnjan we shall certainly stay at Castello.

The house that tourists photograph
We had a 10 days in Vodnjan. Absolutely loved it. We walked out on the cycle paths amid banks of wild flowers, paddled at Peroj, watched the children celebrate the last day of school at Fazana, took the train to Pisino and Savicenta and found Vodnjan quiet, and friendly. All perfectly feasible without car or bikes if you are prepared for some gentle walking - and the weather at the end of May/early June was perfect. The tourist office was patient and helpful with all our requests for information and the people in the local shops couldn't have been more friendly inspite of our slowness with the money and general ignorance of how things are done. Loved the terrace at the end of the day too, of course.
Speaking Italian was useful for communication with older people, but many young people speak English and seem keen to practise!

The apartment is lovely and has everything you need for a relaxed stay, the star of this apartment though is the lovely roof top terrace ideal for chilling with a bottle of wine in the evening watching the sunset.
The castello is ideally placed 20 mins from the airport and pula which has an amazing ampitheatre, 10 mins by car from the beach, there is loads to explore nearby. We totally recommend the beefsteak with truffles at the nearby Vodjanka restaurant and amazing pizzas at Girontoda.
The only downfall for us was the mattress it is so uncomfortable and if that was changed we would have no hesitation in visiting again and would give it 5 stars.

Super Ferien in Vodnjan

Lovely Apartment in Great Location
A really spacious and well appointed apartment in the medieval heart of the pretty town of Vodjnan. Incredibly quick and easy to reach from Pula Airport, yet you feel a world away from the crowds. The apartment was a real sanctuary to return to after a hot and busy day. The air conditioning was a real lifesaver with 38c temperatures, ensuring cool and comfortable slumber in the enormous and very comfortable bed. The views of the old town, the campanile of the church and the sea in the distance was magical, especially from the little roof terrace, Gin and Tonic in hand. Vodnjan is really well placed to tour the sights of Istria: the spectacular Roman amphitheatre in Pula, the wonderful and deserted hill towns of Groznjan and Motovun and the lovely harbour towns of Rovinj and Novigrad. The network of cycle routes would make for some fantastic days out, although it was too hot to do much more than find a quiet stretch of beach and roll into the beautiful Adriatic. The local harbour town of Fazana is also worth a visit, for tasty and rustic seafood on the pretty seafront. A wonderful trip and a lovely base to return to. Arrangements from booking through to arrival were simple and Tessa couldn't have been more helpful. The apartment was spotless and had everything 2 people could need to make their stay very comfortable.

Didn't want to leave...
We just got back from a week at Castello/Vodnjan and had such a brilliant time, it has been hard to get back into the swing of things!
The apartment is beautiful, light and airy - and a really nice base to come back to after exploring. It's excellent value for money.
The town itself is steeped in history and the pace of life is so nice to get into. Great coffee downstairs and a great people watching spot.
There were regular buses to Rovinj where you can swim/cycle/eat lovely seafood, but it was always nice to come back to Vodnjan too. Great cycle down to Fazana too - and the uphill return is good for burning off one too many Girotondo pizzas!
Thanks very much

'Castello & Vodgnan' A Jewel Combination !
Castello is a terrific base to explore Istria, the apartment is superbly located , comfortable and well equipped. Tessa is extremely helpful and gave us lots of detailed information to ensure a smooth arrival from the airport. Vodgnan is quite simply 'Wonderful' so full of authentic Croatian history, peaceful and such lovely people.
I would go certainly not hesitate to go back to Castello and Vodgnan, It was one of the most relaxed, stress free short breaks we've taken. Just wish we'd have gone for 2 weeks ............... but that gives me the excuse to return !!!
Thank you Tessa, it was great.

I am an Australian but I live in Scotland. My husband and I first came to Istria in 2004 and fell in love with it. The following year we bought the appartment in Vodnjan and since then have come to stay at least twice every year. Once we stayed for a whole month as we were able to do our work online.
