2014 STAYZ Award Winner - Best Outdoor Lovers Property WA

Ballakup is the perfect tranquil bush getaway, and yet only minutes from Millbrook winery and the many historical and natural attractions of the Jarrahdale-Serpentine area. Why drive 4 hours or more to the south-west of Western Australia when you can be amongst the beautiful Jarrah forests of Jarrahdale in around 45 minutes from Perth.

Ballakup is not your average holiday house. Why not treat yourself to something special? The modern but earthy house boasts a unique blend of architectural features such as skillion and barrel vaulted ceilings, quality finishes and a stunning solid jarrah deck contoured around native grass trees.

Set in just under an acre of forest, bush and grass trees this custom designed home backs onto state forest with the Munda Biddi mountain bike and walking trail literally right behind the property. Kangaroos, emus, cockatoos and other native wildlife abound.

Jarrahdale has a long and interesting history with logging in the area dating back to the mid-1800s. Ballakup is perfect for a quick weekend getaway, a relaxed holiday with friends, family holidays, tourists visiting Perth or for that romantic trip away. Mountain bikers, hikers and nature lovers will also love it.

"Ballakup" means "place of grass trees" and is derived from the word "Ballak", used by Indigenous peoples of the area (the Nyoongar) for grass trees.

Beautiful bush Setting
The property was very spacious with a great living area. The bush setting was quiet and serene, The house is beginning to feel a little ‘tired’ and needs some maintenance. When we used the electric BBQ it had not been cleaned, by the people who had used it before us and we had to try and clean it before it was used. On arrival we went to put on the air conditioner, only to find the batteries flat in the remote. Luckily I had a small torch that had AAA batteries, so we changed the batteries to get the air con working. The toilet in the main bathroom leaked continually, one of the lights in the main bathroom was blown, the sheets and pillow cases on the bed were so creased it looked as if they had been left in the dryer for 24 hours. Apart from a few ‘cleanliness’ issues, we found the accommodation to be comfortable for a group of 7 adults.

Lovely location
It is a beautiful house in a lovely location. Unfortunately although the listing said it was air conditioned only 1 of the 4 bedrooms were air conditioned. These all had tin roofs which made it extremely hot and very uncomfortable. The air conditioning was a huge factor for us as it was an extremely hot time of year and we were there to attend a family wedding near by, had we known the bedrooms were not all air conditioned we would have sort alternate accommodation. It would be a lovely place for a winter stay.
