..... with just a touch of history!

Built in the 1880s on land first granted to George Cox in 1839, historic 118 Mortimer has been renovated over successive generations of owners and now lovingly restored. 'Kythera' was once owned by the proprietor of Mudgee's historic art deco Regent theatre. The Mediterranean origins of past owners, from the 1930s through to the 1970s, is referenced through the columns and rendering as well as through the naming, 'Kythera'. The cottage and stables were built for the first owner, a blacksmith William Little. You will find the original stables fireplace still standing not far from where you park your car. In 1898 William Little sold the property to Patrick Kirby, named in the title deed as a 'boarding house keeper' (a facsimile copy of the title deed between William Little and Patrick Kirby hangs in the rear hall). You can see 'Kythera' has a long history in providing accommodation in the township and district! Steep yourself in the history of this special piece of Mudgee’s past, when next you tour the Central West of NSW.

The bedrooms are very beautiful. Having two full bathrooms was handy. We enjoyed the large bathtub. We played board games and watched Netflix. The kitchen had everything and was clean. Each afternoon we sat in the pretty yard under the tree enjoying dusk.

Very happy with our choice, house clean tidy & extremely well equipped. Comfortable beds & good linen. Safe yard for dogs and a short stroll to every thing. Highly recommended.

Old world charm
Lovely old house in a very convenient location within walking distance to shops, pubs and restaurants. Traffic can be noisy at ‘peak’ times. This was our second stay at this lovely old house. It wasn't as clean as our previous visit and is looking a little worn now. Very well stocked pantry. We thoroughly enjoyed our Mudgee visit.

Charming and comfortable .
A lovely old house , comfortable , but needs a little updating . Excellent position, quiet , close to shops. One drawback is that the big bath in the bathroom means that older people or those with a disability , have to use the bathroom in the laundry a few steps outside the back door .

After a career in education, I fell in love and moved to Mudgee in 2006-7. I taught briefly at one of the local schools. Now retired, ‘Kythera’ (so named in reference to the birthplace of a previous owner) is now my main occupation.

Why they chose this property

One Saturday morning I was driving past this house and noticed there was an ‘open house’ before auction. I decided to stop and stickybeak. I fell in love with it between entering the front door and walking through to the kitchen toward the rear of the house! Nobody else bid at auction and suddenly it was mine! A little work was needed including a complete bathroom rebuild.
I’ve never lived in the house myself but know the house has a wonderful warm feeling about it, evoking times gone by.

What makes this property unique

The house is very central in Mudgee township which means you can walk to everything in town. Leave the car behind after you’ve spent the day exploring the region and all it has to offer.
